Saw the Holdsworth trio with Jimmy and Chad Wackerman Saturday night at Yoshi's--wow! If they're coming to your town, don't miss it. All 3 are at the top of their form. Jimmy's solos on "Water on the Brain" and a new tune were wonders to behold, and his support playing is only slightly less intense. It's a joy to hear that Series II 5 through a great house system like Yoshi's--in fact, the only bass gear onstage was a Walter Woods head (without a speaker plugged in) and a DS-5 in slant top box. Sat at Jimmy's feet first set, where the sound was OK, and halfway back in the house the second set, where the sound was amazing. It was interesting to watch him up close--very light touch with the right hand. And man, can he do some incredible register jumps with the left hand! |

Coincidentally I was listening to Allan's 'Sand' album at the weekend (on vinyl of course). Fantastic! It would be equally fantastic if he could find the time to come over the pond for a few gigs. I'd hoped to see jimmy on the recent james Taylor tour but that was JT's one man band gig. Graeme (Message edited by jacko on September 04, 2007) |

Graeme, A few days ago I got this e-mail from a company called "Moonjune Records" stating Allan is touring now in California (tomorrow and Sept 8th last 2 gigs in the Baked Potato, LA) and will come to the UK with the original "Metal Fatigue" killer trio from Nov 22nd - Dec 6; venues are not (yet) on Allan's site (therealallanholdsworth.com) but can be found on Chad Wackerman's site (www.chadwackerman.com). For early 2008 the e-mail asks to "stay tuned for confirmation on following tours": - Japan (January 2008 with Jimmy Johnson & Gary Husband) - Mexico (February 2008; with Jimmy Johnson & Chad Wackerman) - Central Europe tour in March 22-April 15 (Poland, Czech Republik, Austria, Germany, Benelux; with Jimmy Johnson & Chad Wackerman) - USA tour April 30-May 24 (with Jimmy Johnson & Chad Wackerman). Sure do hope they'll make it to this side of the North Sea in March/April '08, too. I recently saw JJ here in Holland with Michael Landau and had the honour of talking to him for about half an hour afterwards. Extremely nice and modest guy. Take care, Reinier |

According to Wackerman's site, they also do 13 concerts throughout the UK in November and December 2007. Reinier, when are they coming to our neck of the woods? |

Someone should tell them the UK includes Scotland and Northern Ireland. Looks like I might have to get tickets for the Newcastle show - that's only 20 miles from my mum's. Graeme |

My humble apologies to all Scots and Northern Irish folk for mislabeling the England and Wales tour as a UK tour. To these ears of mine, Abertillary sounded a bit Scottish - turns out it's Welsh. Sitting amidst some lovely countryside, judging by Google Maps. If they play places like that, indeed you wonder why they can't play Edinburgh or Glasgow. |

Adriaan, The (not yet confirmed) dates for the European mainland are March 22- April 15, 2008...... That's a long wait, but worth it, no doubt. Then again, with today's airline ticket prices you'll be cheaper off booking a flight to London than buying a new pair o' trunks for swimming the Canal ;-) And that shortens your wait by some 3 months with the additional advantage of the UK - pardon me, Graeme: England - gigs being confirmed; should funds become scarce later on, they may be forced to drop one or two trips altogether. I'm still considering going to England to be on the safe side. Any advice from fellow members on which venue is the nicest to go see Allan? Thx & take care, Reinier |

I've had confirmation from Allan's management that he's not playing in Scotland or Northern ireland;-) Reinier. I've no idea if the flights work but the newcastle gig is on a friday which would give you the rest of the weekend to visit Northumberland, surely the UK's finest (and probably last) unspoilt area of outstanding beauty. I may biased as it's my 'home' county but you can walk in the countryside all day and not meet a single tourist. Graeme |

Found some nice pics from JJ thoroughly enjoying himself playing with this thread's trio at the 2007 "North East Art Rock" Progressive Rock festival. You can scoop the fun right off of JJ's face, proving what a kick it must give, being up there with Allan Holdsworth and Chad Wackerman (if only I could get that right ring-finger to do as told, arghhh!). Enjoy! http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/IMG_2253.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9617.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9502.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9505.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9506.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9562.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9729.htm |

Fantastic photos Reinier! You should put them up in the showcase section. I love the way Jimmy has made a 'christmas tree' out of his string ends instead of clipping them ;-) Graeme |

Apologies! The last two links apparently point at pics of Chad Wackerman and although he's got his hands full, he's not holding a beautiful SII..... Here are the two links I had in mind posting: http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9545.htm http://www.studiomlive.com/nearfest2007/Allan%20Holdsworth/pages/_DSC9546.htm |

Good stuff Graeme! Hadn't even noticed (but did notice he's apparently still using GHS Boomers, which turn dull a bit too quickly for my taste). When I spoke to JJ here in NL last year, I had the pleasure of having this bass around my neck for a few minutes (I couldn't play 'cause I had cut one of my fingers gardening....). What was most striking was the weight: it is much lighter than my JJ Signature. One of the reasons (the others probably being hollow body wings and a huge cavity for the SII guts?) Jimmy told me is that he still orders his SII's with what reportedly was a production error on a few early Alembics: an aluminium bridge block. Perhaps some of our club members have an instrument with this feature? I guess on a total of some 5 kilos, every ounce counts... |
