It is my displeasure to report the death of Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Hughie Thomasson on September 9, 2007. He died of an apparent heart attack late Sun. eve.

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform on numerous occasions both with the Outlaws and Skynyrd. Nice guy and great guitarist. You can't miss his Tele parts on the early Outlaws albums...see "Green Grass And High Tides" and "Hurry Sundown" for further edification.

My condolences to his family and friends.

God Speed, Hughie!

Cheers,

Kevin

That's sad news, Kevin. When I first moved to Florida from Illinois in 1969 a couple of friends came along to help drive. We met some girls at the beach who took us to a little club on the outskirts of Tampa. The Outlaws were playing that evening. They were just a local band at the time. I don't know if Hughie was with them or not but I've always had a soft spot for the band from that night.

Thanks, Dave. Cool "bootleg" live studio version. You can't miss Hughie's tasty lines in that one!

FWIW, Having missed the '05 30th anniversary Outlaws tour with Hughie, and seeing Skynyrd that year playing short-handed without him, I had hoped Hughie was gonna be playing with Skynyrd again this year. I have tix for this Sat night and, unfortunately, this is now a moot point. It turns out that LS is going dual-guitar again anyway (Gary Rossington and Ricky Medlocke).

Very sad news. I've been so busy this week, I just found out. Truly one of the most underrated guitarists in music.
