Hey guys! I just took in an Am Std Strat on trade.... First "real" strat Ive ever owned... Here's what I'm thinking of~ 1. Dummy coil for middle position: does anyone know someone who makes them, or could possibly wind one to a matching impedance? I'd like to go hum-cancelling w/ 3way switching and a designated LP filter for the bridge & neck. 2. Strat-o-blaster: are they still available? thanks in advance! |

I'm pretty sure they are...I have a couple older ones if your on a budget...I like the idea of a humcanceller as the center cavity with a strat...would look stock. I purchased a 2004 mim strat that is awesome...it's the aztec gold anniversary model, so except for flipping the center pickup I'm keeping it stock...the stratoblasters are just sitting around. cheers |

I'm sure mica mentioned something about using the centre pickup in a strat as a hum canceller in another thread. You may wanna do some searching. Jazzyvee |

A dummy coil is exactly like a regular pickup except that it is wound in the reverse direction and has no magnets. In an American Strat, the middle pickup already has reverse winding, but I don't know if there's any way to remove the magnets. I doubt you could get a magnet-less pickup from Fender, but smaller shops (maybe even Duncan if you write to them directly) can probably produce something like this for you. Your middle pickup now is probably reverse-wind, reverse polarity. When you run the guitar in the 2nd or 4th switch position where two pickups are on, then you are getting a hum-cancelling effect, but you're also getting a different tone because there are two pickups on. If you had a dummy coil, the neck pickup would sound exactly as it does now but without hum which is good, but you'd lose the "in-between" tones. In the 80's Fender made a Strat Elite model which had 3 special single-coil pickups with a 4th dummy coil in the back of the guitar. I had one of these which was a good idea but not a particularly great sounding instrument. The original Paul Reed Smith bass also had a setup like this with 3 single coil bass pickups (theoretically like a Jazz Bass + EB0 pickup) and a dummy coil in the back as well. David Fung |

I think that David's original post actually made it into the FAQs section of the forum. Thanks BTW, I think that thread is what got my wheels spinning on this project. I dont have a decent pickup that I want to atempt to butcher in such a manner, so I figured I'd ask if anyone knows of anyone who spins bobbins.... |

Actually no Elwood, I havent sat down w/ a G&L in a long time.... But there are several shops around here that have 'em. I actually think Im gonna suck it up and get a blaster from the online shop, but thanks for the offer! Also, after I posted last night, I made a sucessful attempt at removing the polepieces from one of the american standard pups!!!! |

right on, that way you know everything is fresh and will work as it should. congrats on the 'pole'-ectomy, are you going to have just the neck and bridge then, or are you going to do the 80's fender thing...? If you find an f-1oo with the 9volt preamp...they are so versatile. smiles |

All I want is the neck and bridge and a 3way switch. Im going to get rid of the stock TBX tone control and wire a Bill Lawrence Qfilter up for each pup. |
