Not sure.

What with holidays, I'm thinking either early-mid December or January sometime.

If we schedule late enough, I can bring my new 6 string.

Thoughts?

Hi Guys. :-)

Nice to see the interest and just speaking for myself, this seems like it could be a real gas. :-)

So, we're just now 'hashing out' the basics and need get to the details part it, as it looks like more than Bradley and me are interested. Sweet. :-)

The downside is after speaking with Chad, Bass Northwest would be hard pressed to sponsor it, as it could only be available during business hours as the guys are gigging and/or have families etc. Needless to say, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to descend upon them with our instruments and bodies during business hours, as they're so full of instruments and gear it doesn't have much available space.

So now we need to find a place to together. Chad wasn't too positive about any of the local Seattle rehearsal spaces, as they're mostly set up for a band, or one to two individuals. I've an idea about a place over on the peninsula side that would actually be very cool, but until I check out availability, I won't speak any further about it.

So now the question comes to mind with anyone local to the Seattle area, do you know of any location that would able to support, at this time, an unknown number Alembic bassists getting together and having a 'rumble'? ;)

Also, during the initial phase of the idea, it was thrown out that sometime around December/January might be a good time, though let me say this is as tentative as everything else so far, as it truly is in the basics phase.

So, any and all ideas and suggestions are appreciated. :-)

And as likely for awhile, updates when they happen. :-)

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-)

(edited to change the time frame) :-)

Any room for a UK visitor if I can
a)afford the flight after Christmas
b) Get the time off work

Usually no gigs in Jan as the holiday/party season is over

Hi Terry. :-)

If...

a) you can afford a flight
b) get the time off work

Then...

a) you won't go hungry and will have a place to stay
b) should have a heck of a story to tell your workmates when you return.

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-)

Hi Terry. :-)

Nothing noble about a 'lil o' bit of southern hospitality'. Just the way I was 'brung up'. ;)

I'm in agreement about January and am in process of checking availablity for a hall we could rent that would be perfect for a gathering. Seating for 100+, house PA, stage, lights etc. More specifics and details as soon as tomorrow.

How's about we make this official for January?

Available dates for the hall are Saturday the 5th and 12th, and Sunday the 6th and 13th. Let me know as I'm talking to the hall tomorrow to first check to see if these dates are still open and cost. I'm also going to speak with Chad and Evan at Bass Northwest to see if for a 'bit o' free' publicity they'll help defray costs. I would think a six hour booking should be just fine for our needs.

Hi Guys. :-)

I locked in a pretty good blues sax guy that's interested in adding some 'color' to the 'rumble'. I've a couple of guitar guys and a couple of drummers that I'll be speaking with to see about 'adding to the mix'. :-)

Any 'Seattleites/locals' know any good keyboard players that would be interested?

Updates as they happen, when they happen. :-)

So it looks like it would take me 14 hours to drive from my house to the seattle area. So, I could drive it. Hence, if we can settle on something soon, I'll put in for the vacation. And I'll come up and bring my EAW NT PA System with me.

Snoqualmie pass is usually pretty well maintained, the only issue is if it's snowing or not.

We can probably billet a few people at our house as well, let me know if you need accommodations.

Hi Guys. :-)

The latest haps for the 'Bass Rumble'. ;)

I've spoken to the Island Music Guild and have made a tentative booking for January 5th. At this point there are a couple of options.

1) Renting it for 4-6 hours and not using any of the facilities i.e. PA, as Doc Greene aka 'alembic doctor' says he'll bring his PA. Thanks Doc. :-) And then having an informal swap licks/grooves jam session with accompanying drums, guitars, horns etc. or,

2) Renting the hall for 4-6 hours for our get together, extending the rental for a couple more hours and then...sound of a snare drum followed by a six or seven piece horn section flourish, put on a show open to the public. :-) Advertising through the Island Guild newsletter and my own locations for posting flyers and newsletter mailing list, word of mouth etc. and make this into an event, deep voice, 'the likes of which has never been seen before'. Speaking for myself I think this is worth discussing.

So...

1) It's time for a show of hands for Saturday January 5th, tentatively booked for 2:00pm until 6:00ish to 8:00ish.

2) It's time for a show of hands for putting on a show open to the public as a continuation of the get together.

Need input guys. ;)

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-)

PS. As you may have noticed, I've taken the liberty of naming the event the 'Bass Rumble' which is how it will be advertised through the Guild. Needless to say it would also be advertised as such for flyers, newsletters, word of mouth etc. in the event we go public. Hope no one minds. :-)

1) A later weekend might be better for me, but I can probably make it work.

2)I like the idea of a public event. But, when we had our Nor Cal Gathering, we did not have a public offering or public discussion of the location for security purposes.

As noted in the Dallas thread, "structure" is a good idea. Members come from very different musical backgrounds; and to accomodate all of the members, a variety of music needs to be played. In the Dallas thread, Mike suggested that each player suggest three songs that they would like to play; I think that's a good idea. However, the "backing band" (drums, additional guitars, lead vocals) will need to know the songs in advance. It will take some planning, but I think it will be more fun for all if everyone gets to play on songs that they know and are comfortable with.

Hi Guys. :-)

I see we've a veritable hotbed of activity here. ;)

Anyway...nothing new to 'report' since my last posting. I've still got to get commitment from some percussion and a 'six stringer'. Needless to say, I'll keep everyone posted. :-)

So...in order to not 'muddy the waters' I'm going to separate my responses into two messages.

Part 1

Alembic Doctor - I'm reasonably sure security will not be an issue as,

1) The Island Guild is a well known organization that has a very nice facility that for our security will have locked doors. I'm also going to inform the local Bainbridge Island police department of the event and ask that they be aware and maybe make more than usual pass by's to assure all is well. And then of course we have our own Bradley (byoung) providing his own form of what I'm sure will be rather effective security. Heck for that matter, I could pack some iron as well. ;)

2) We're on an island with only two ways of access and/or departure. Ferry boat to and from Seattle and a bridge over Agate Pass. In the event of a most 'heinous crime', I would not hesitiate to call local, county and state law enforcement in a effort to 'head 'em off at the pass'. :-)

I hope this additional information eases any of the valid and legitimate concerns you may have. :-)

Part 2 :-)

Thanks to Moderator Dave for his input and opening this topic for discussion. (Hi Dave) :-)

The selection of material and applying structure and organization in advance is a good idea to be able to best 'maximize' our time together and at the Guild Hall.

However, this may be a situation of putting the 'cart before the horse', as I feel we should first define what each and every individual's expectations are for this gathering.

For example, some may be very interested in performing 'live' for the public and others may have no desire to do so. Some may want to 'swap licks' or are looking for a 'workshop' to improve skills, or would just like some help in figuring out what Stanley or Jaco were doing during a section of a tune, or what's this progression etc..

As you can see, this is a more complex message that will require some participation in an effort to define our objectives and purpose in 'getting together'.

I'll take the lead and describe my vision of the event.

For the day we have together, i.e. the informal sit around cussin' and spittin', got any hot licks, check this out, want to try this etc. time, try to address each individuals expectations in a workshop or one on one format which would be ultimately be followed by an all around 'all hands' wanton jam session applying the demonstrated principles and techniques/material in the 'real world'. (Takes a breath) :-)

I see this could also be done in a 'round robin' type format where we all 'take turns' to have our questions/needs/desires/expectations addressed by individuals and/or by the group.

In the event of an individual only being interested in learning some tunes to perform, either at the event or back home, I'm sure the available talent would be able to help each 'request' either through backing or teaching/helping learn.

For a live performance, I have a vision of something similar to, or the same as the Bass Day '98 DVD in my collection. Individual performers presenting material with backing instrumentation/players as desired/needed (and available), followed by an 'all hands' finale featuring those who want to 'step on up' and 'put it out there'. :-)

And that's Kimberly's vision of the 'world'. :-)

Next? ;)

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-)

(Edited for a typo) :-)

Dear Northern Contingent:

From my own experience helping to set up the Northern California get together, let me suggest some (IMHO) EXTREMELY important considerations that you may be overlooking:

Beer
munchies
diet coke (a personal favorite)
napkins to wipe greasy hands before playing
cameras/video to capture it all and report back to the rest of us!

Have a great time.

Hi Guys. :-)

Thanks for the reminder(s), as I've gotten so caught up in the minutia I lost sight of the fundamentals and basics. You know, the really important stuff. :-)

Beer - Check! Differential of darks to light to be determined. ;)

Munchies - Check! (Special dietary requirements available by request.)

Non-alcoholic beverage(s) w/diet coke by request (heading up this way Bill?) ;) - Check!

Napkins *and* paper towels for greasy hands and accidental (and borderline criminal) beer spillage - Check!

Digital camera(s) w/fresh batteries and backups - Check!

Video camera w/many hours worth of tapes. - Check!

Plans for posting of pictures and my fav, YouTube videos for historical reference. - Check!

Required Alembic discussion board posting time limit heard and understood. :-)

Sounds like once I hear from the attendees, we're good to go. :-)

Whew...that was close. ;) Thanks guys! :-)

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-)

Hi Guys. :-)

Here's the haps.

The Island Music Guild booking is solid from 2:00pm until 10:00pm, Saturday January 5th. :-)

I've taken the liberty of breaking Saturday into two distinct events/venues.

The schedule is as follows.

Meeting, making introductions, setting up, getting settled etc. starting at 1:30pmish.

From the 'official start time of 2:00pm' until 7:00-7:30pm, it's an Alembic owners get together with lick swapping, song learning, song playing, let's have some fun jamming time. This event is behind closed and locked doors and is *not* open to the public.

Sometime around 5:00pmish will be meal time. So far seafood bisque is on the menu for one of the 'main course' offerings. Please let me know if anyone has any seafood allergies, as it's quite 'heavy' with shellfish. I would imagine we'll also have salmon in some form or another, as after all this is the Pacific Northwest don't cha know. ;)

The second event of the day's 'official start time of 8:00pm', is an open to the public performance featuring me and any other Alembic owner(s) that has desire or inclination to join on in. If 'someone' is so inclined to join me in performing, advance notice would be very much appreciated so I can adjust the advertising of the 'Bass Rumble'.

For example.

1st Annual Bainbridge Island Bass Rumble

Saturday January 5th, 8:00-10:00pm

Featuring Bassists

Bradley Young from Covington, WA
Kimberly Lynn from Kingston, WA
Terry from UK

etc, etc...

Free Admission, open to the public, suggested donation of $5.00

etc, etc...

Those who have no interest in performing live are of course welcome to stay for the show.

The last performance of the evening will end at 10:00pm and that will be the 'official end of the Rumble'.

I'll also be speaking with Bass Northwest again to see if they can help defray expenses and maybe lend us an amp, or two, or three. ;)

Borrowing again from our own Bradley, "Thoughts?"

Regards,

Kimberly --- tearing out of the room to get ready for her open mike. :-)

Pardon me for being so bold, but I couldn't help myself from doing a travelocity search for a flight from Indianapolis to Seattle and back. I came up with about $350 for arrival on the 5th and departure on the 6th. As well, accomodations would not be an issue. Just a thought, or two. ;)

This rules. I'm totally down for this event.

I can bring several preamps, my 'big rig', and my combo amp as well as my Alembic so people can try out stuff - if there is interest and I'm guessing there will be. :-) I have a pickup with a nice canopy so rain/weather isn't an issue.

Stuff I can bring:

Alembic John Paul Jones Custom
Mesa Boogie Venture combo
Epifani UL212
Epifani UL410
Stewart World 1.6 power amp
Ampeg SVP-CL (the SVT preamp)
SWR Mini Mo'

I'd really like to be able to bring a brand spankin' new Rogue 5 string but there is no way it's going to be done in less than 2 months... especially since they haven't even started building it yet (to my knowledge). :-)

Howdy Neighbor. :-)

Fresh baked bread and a side dish sounds really great thank you. :-) Thomas Kemper root beer? Sweet. :-)

'Business stuff'

I have no monitor system (or cables to hook one up) so if you'd like to help out, that would be very nice. :-)

We should probably think this through some. You being on Bainbridge, you're probably familiar with the Guild hall. I was in last week to book it and noted they've got a lot of isolation walls stashed along one wall which seemingly dramatically decreased the size of the room. Anyway, I don't think it holds 100 people any longer. Point being, how much gear do we need to 'work it'? Bass gear to 'play around with' for comparison purposes is very cool, but a sound re-enforcement system might not need to be very massive. What do you think about this re: PA, monitor system, additional amps, speakers, etc...? :-)

If you'd like to go 'offline' my email is available through my profile. Maybe we could get together and 'do lunch' sometime? I could have my people get in touch with your people... ;)

Hi Briant and welcome aboard. :-)

Sounds like you've got it covered with gear to play with. Works just fine for me. Personally I'd be very interesting in hooking your Epifani UL410 up as an extension to my UL 500 single 12 combo. I suspect to say it will rock could be understating it. ;)

Greetings from Tacoma! Just found this thread, sounds interesting. Would be nice to meet fellow owners. I could bring: Classico 6-string - Spyder 4 & 8 string, Essense 6 & Orion 6 fretless. Could also bring the ELF system....man that low B on the Classico bowed! Anyway, some of these are probably not often available to many of you to plink around on and I would gladly let everyone have a go at them.... that said....I would be uncomfortable "open-to-the-public" or even open to non-alembic owners.....may sound snooty, but you can appreciate the situation with your own alembic passed to someone who doesn't appreciate / understand the cost's inherent. Anyway....will continue to monitor the situation.

My vote? not open to the public. Performance - not a priority - food? OK as long as the beer sloshing doesn't come in to proximity to the coco bolo :-)

Gary-

I'm guessing that you are going to be a VERY welcomed addition to the mix. From what I understand, the first portion of the day will be a closed to the public jam/play around session.

I'm nowhere near Seattle, but based on what you're bringing, I'm wishing I was closer.

Hi Guys. :-)

Gary - You would most certainly "be a VERY welcomed addition to the mix", and a warm welcome to you for this interim/transitory/introductory period, as it's very nice to 'meet' another local Alembic(s) owner. :-)

To clarify, the "mix" is as Toby (tbrannon) has said, "the first portion of the day will be a *closed to the public* jam/play around session." Emphasis mine. :-)

You're most welcome to join in the event with whatever time frame and level of participation you feel comfortable with. :-)

Toby - What you said. ;) Thank you. :-)

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-)

Hi Royce. :-)

Nice to meet you and welcome.

Here's a copy/paste of the basic info.

'The Island Music Guild booking is solid from 2:00pm until 10:00pm, Saturday January 5th.

If 'someone' is so inclined to join me in performing, advance notice would be very much appreciated so I can adjust the advertising of the 'Bass Rumble'."

Back to 'real time'.

Royce - That's pretty much the haps, though due to lack of 'feedback', I may change the meal plan to a more 'traditional musicians fare' like pizza. ;)

Other than that it's all good. :-)

Here's a link to the Guild Hall.

January 5th. 2:00pm-10:00pm

Hope to see you there.

Best Regards,

Kimberly :-) <---wonders why she just couldn't have said 01/05/08 2-10pm and then added the link. :D
