I'm in. Olie, Pete and myself have expressed an interest in a more structured time together and I don't mean that we need parental supervision ;). How does everyone feel about suggesting a song or three they'd like to play? If you're comfortable enough, even some original material. Also, the two guitarist in my worhsip band have expressed and interest in joining us. Is that cool with everyone? Time frame: November is pretty much shot. December Saturdays after the 8th are open for me. I'm in no hurry, so slipping into '08 is okay, too. Although I imagine John will be crawling the walls wanting to show his recent purchase and rightfully so, it's a beauty. 25 Alembics? I'd really like to help, but unless there's a gracious donor out there it's just me and my one. Mike |

With the 17 basses we had first time and the new one john's getting, and didn't olie get a new one, that would 19, we just need to get a few more Alembic owners to come to our party, then 25 Alembic's is not that far off, I think we can do it !!!! as far as Structure goes thats fine with me, we may need a small PA system or not. as for time, it would be great if we could pick a date so Jorge and Mike (Dela217) could make it up from the Big Easy. David T P.S. and if anyone can make it to Okla City, I can drive from here |

Jorge, Congratulations to you and your wife. I love kids, just too old and too tired of contributing Pamper's finest to the land fill to have any more. We don't have a date, so there's still time. So maybe around the 15th16th? Is that late enough? Need a note for the missus? Mike |

The Dragonfly in Texas? You bet, bring it on. One of the guitar players I mentioned a few posts back, says he's in. He, Dave Seaton, suggested this location in the Plano area, yeah that's still in Texas for the outta towners. The Showcase Room at the Jam Station. Looks over the top, but it provides room to sit and bring guests if so inclined. Maybe a cooler or two. Rates are $60 for a four hour block. Includes 500 watt PA and 8 channel mixer. Set up time (30 minutes prior) at no charge (how fast are you, really?). Advantages are that it's easy to find, PA system, rate is decent when split by a several people, room to relax and spread out and we're not imposing on smuprof's heretofor exceptional hospitality. Right now the only disadvatnage I can think of is the four hour block. Not sure if there is an option for additional prorated hourly blocks. I'm willing to inquire and book when we settle on a date. Thoughts? Mike |

Olie, Hats off to Dave for finding that spot, looks great to me, too. So, that's two votes in favor. I just heard from the other guitar player, he's game. So, that makes a potential boat load of bassists, two guitar players. Pete expressed interest, but like most of us, it's date dependent. Everyone, please look at your calendar, pick a prefered month. I'm suggesting January simply because of the upcoming holiday season. I can't realistically schedule anything prior - but don't let that deter anyone from suggesting anything different. Once we've settled on that we'll eventually need to take this off line and handle the details via private email. {edit for additional information} (Message edited by groovelines on November 08, 2007) |

Hey guys - You know I'm in - I was actually toying with December 1st, but sounds like that excludes Wayne? And maybe Jorge? The Jam Station idea is fine with me, and we can always use my office and conference room again if we want (office may be a little more secure). I'd rather wait until January to have maximum attendance than to rush it and have limited turn out (although we've always had fun). If I'm counting right, we had 17 before, plus 2 from Houston, plus 2 from N.O., plus a new one for Olie and one for me puts us at about 23? Any more Houstonians? San Antonioans? Somoans? I also have a young guitarist (22) who's been playing for years and is into blues improvisation who is willling to join us any weekend. I may have a second drummer as well depending on the weekend. As far as music goes, I'll start the list with Brown-eyed Girl. Here's my thinking - great recognizable bass line for one or two players, double lead line could be cleanly reproduced on bass by a couple of other players, couple of guys on upper register chords (split up the notes) for the verse and choruses, and a soloist/melody on top of that. With a little preliminary work (maybe another good reason to wait until January), I think you could actually incorporate 7 distinct bass parts into that one song - with a little mixing, that would be cool. Some Doobie Brothers tunes, some Stevie Ray Vaughn numbers, and some Rush numbers could probably also be worked up the same way. And I'm open to other suggestions, but we do need the song list, volunteers for parts, and a little time to create chord charts to give everyone a common starting point. (we all know exactly where the changes are until two or more start playing together ) Just a few thoughts. JFT |

I'd like to see us try Sir Duke, and Frankenstein. These two should be a blast to play. I get a kick out the fact that everytime people think "Texas" and music they think C&W(Country and Western)or Country Swing. Olie; there are reasons for that. And one such reason is that the people of Texas collectively promote that image of themselves to the rest of the world. Here's an example, and I'm going from memory here, so I might be incorrect. I haven't watched TV in a while, but when I did, Austin City Limits was one of the shows I watched. The opening of the broadcast included commercials from the sponsors, one of which was the Texas Tourism Board (or some such similarly named organization) (now that I think about at length, it may have been the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau); and the soundtrack for that commercial, if I remember correctly, was "Miles and Miles of Texas" featuring some really nice pedal steel work. It's like cowboy hats. My guess is that there are people in Texas who do not wear cowboy hats, and that there are people in Texas who wear other kinds of hats. But the image people have of Texas is of a place where everyone wears cowboy hats. And the image Texas and Texans collectively portray of themselves to the world is of a state where everyone wears cowboy hats (probably to the consternation of some non-cowboy hat wearing Texans). [edit: typo] [note: it took me over an hour to write this, and in the meantime Olie's posted two other messages; so this was a response to his first post about Texas Swing] (Message edited by davehouck on November 13, 2007) |

Make NO mistakes about it, I am proud of my Texas heritage but I also find the humor in the stereotypical Texan. Yes we do have a LOT of cowboy hats in Texas but we also have a ton of “saggers”, (They must be proud of their underwear or something. I’ll never understand the look myself.) metro-sexuals and high fashion extremist. A virtual plethora of fashion and design. (And Bi-lingual too) On a historical note, when we think cowboy hat we think Texas. John B Stetson, credited with designing and marketing the first “Cowboy Hat” did so in Joseph Missouri. But they can be traced back to the Mexican Vaqueros of Mexico. Proud to be an Earthling, (those Plutonians are just plain ol' ugly), Olie PS. I love Texas Swing. |

John and Oliver mentioned covering some songs at the Jam. Maybe there should a posted list of the specific songs we'd like to do? Just a thought. Any possibility of recording it for posterity? Just like local hot-rod clubs take pictures of the cool cars and post them for people to see. The Southwest Alembic club can post recordings? |

Daniel, are you volunteering? I had chance to stop by the Jam Station this afternoon, sorry Olie, I had an opportunity and took it. Some more information to digest. The rates advertised on the website are"rehearsal" rates. There is a different and more expensive rate, for events or parties - $100/hr. After I described what we are meaning to do, it still qualifies as a rehearsal - $60/3hr block, but it's borderline since we're technically not auditioning anyone or rehearsing. Our spouses can visit/stay but that's about it. Once the guest traffic starts to increase it becomes more of a party. The room is large enough to accommodate the expected number and gear. The stage will comfortably accommodate a good sized kit and three players. Reasonably clean. Not much in the way of security, the lobby door is unlocked during business hours, no cypher or key pad as I have seen on some rehearsal buildings. Might be a concern for some. 2nd floor, elevator access in the lobby for load in. The room is right above. The room is available for the 12th. doors open at noon. We can book successive 3hr blocks - would 2 do it? After that we can rent per hour as long as the room is available. There is a smaller room at the lower rehearsal room rate. But I think it's too small, the PA is a Fender Passport with a 6 channel mixer. Dirty and ragged. Not, in my opinion, a place I want to spend any amount of time, yeah, even with you guys... The person I talked to was as helpful as she could be, but suggested I call back when the "tech guy" was on duty for any sound/PA/recording questions. From what I can infer from previous posts, Michael, Olie, David and myself are good for the 12th. Daniel and Doc as strong possibles and Craig, Wayne and Jorge still on the fence. Is that right? The two guitarists from my church are still in, I'll need to confirm with Pete (drums). All for now, not feeling well, I'm going to bed. Mike |

I'm good for the 12th and I think 6hrs should be plenty. If we're planning on putting some tunes together as a "set list" so to speak we should probably start throwing in some suggestions. My 2 censt worth, "Low Rider", should be easy to do. "Frankenstein", may be more challenging. "Sir Duke", maybe even more challenging. Of cousre we could always have some fun with "School Days". "Mary Had A Little Lamb" by SRV would be fun too. Olie |

Hey Gang - I'm good for the 12th as of right now. Jam Station is fine . . . there should be enough of us for security, and I think the two sessions will work. We won't be able to leave/eat during the session since the security is "us" - just a thought. Looking forward to meeting others this time around. Mike, do we want to invite any other guitarists/drummers? I've got some good possibilities for jamming. JFT |

I will be out of pocket (no computer) from 12-21-07 thru 1-2-08, so if anything big happens while I'm off, somebody give me a call (the Dallas Alembic Cartel) David T |

Jorge and Mike would we want ride up together? I'm not entirely familiar with getting around Dallas. Maybe we could meet up and follow each other? Just a thought. |

John, Glad you can make it. I've asked Pete several times and haven't heard back. So, if you know of a drummer, please invite him to come out. There is a house kit, for a fee, but he's welcome to bring his own. Same for the guitar player. I know of one firm, and Doc from Houston expressed some interest, but is still only probable. Another six stringer would be great. As far as eats there are several places in the area where we could order and pick up or might deliver. I'll investigate. Dave, Does anyone have your number? You can send a PM to me in case. Daniel, I'll make sure to send links and other driving info to all as we get closer. Mike |

the only thing that worries me is, will the jam station look at fact that not all of us will be jamming at the same time, will this make some of us spectators, do they under stand whats going on David T |

I don't think it'll be a problem. Now if we had 20 or 30 people standing around listening they may raise an eye brow or two. Besides when they realize that “Sir” David is there they won’t give us any grief. Olie |

David, Shouldn't be a problem. I was very clear with the management as to our intentions. Gads, I'd can't even begin to imagine a bass only Rockestra. Mike |
