Fortunatly, I never had the pain of wearing braces. I guess they do hurt. I just had the EXTREME pain of PAYING for 2 sets. That REALLY hurt :-(

Good luck, Jared and Greg. It'll be worth it in the end :D

I was good ol metal mouth when I was a kid too.
My ortho said "Don't chew bubble gum!" He didn't know about reverse psychology and kids. Man, he had to take all the metal bands off my teeh, clean out the gum, and reassemble them back again! It hurt like hell, and I NEVER chewed gum for years after that! I also remember these little rubber bands that would hook in on both sides, and if I laughed really hard, they would fly out of my mouth across the room! I can laugh now years later with a really nice straight smile. What is painful now will be well worth the wait! PS: don't kiss a girl with braces too! You can get locked up together (which can be good & bad!)

I may be the oldest guy around with braces (54 yo). I've had em for about 2 months (only 12 months to go) and I have a newfound respect for teenagers going through this aggravation and discomfort. Nobody listens to them! They deserve better.
Unfortunately, my 13 year old, who just finished with his braces, remembers all too well how unappreciative I was of his struggle. Whenever I remark about how uncomfortable my braces are, he sneers: "Man up, Dad. They're only braces!" I hope he's enjoying his acne...

"Man up"-- that's great.

Follows my father-in-law's favorite saying, "buck up", as in, "If you want to marry my daughter, you need to buck up and get a job."

Some of the best advice I ever accepted, and a much longer story for another day. :-)

They said wear 'em for ONLY 16mos...it was 5yrs(!!!) when I gave up and I cut 'em off myself with a pair of dikes! After a few months of ignoring my appointments, the doc finally called and asked if I'd like 'em removed, LOL! It was costing him a lot of money...I paid a lump-sum in installments and he had to see me for almost 4yrs. longer than he planned!

The pain and mouth cuts/callouses...wax, rubber bands, broken (and sharp) arch wires.

Didn't eat solid food for over a week when I got 'em, (and I got 'em at 19!).

If I knew then what I know now, I'd NEVER have gotten them...they didn't fix the problem they were originally supposed to!

Jared--

Hang in there--it will get better as you and your mouth learn to adjust to all that metal.

I have had my braces for 2 years, 7 months. I was very, very unhappy with life for the first month. I had to get 4 teeth removed before the orthodontist would install the braces--2 upper and 2 lower. My teeth were too crowded together and the braces would not have been able to move them into the proper alignment. Learning to chew anything at all was my biggest challenge. I had visions of sucking all my meals through a straw, with jello and chocolate pudding being the only "solid" food I could handle. At first I had a plastic bite plate which covered most of the roof of my mouth to contend with also. I was supposed to eat with it on, which just added to my chewing difficulties and screwed up how my tongue worked. Whenever I tried to talk, I sounded like Jerry Lewis in the original Nutty Professor movies. I soon wore it only at night--could not deal with talking to people on the job during the day.

Hunger eventually overcame my initial chewing problems--I have been able to tackle anything short of saltwater taffy or peanut brittle.

No committment from the orthodontist as to when the braces come off. He keeps saying, "Some cases take longer than others." (He's not stringing me along for the money--I paid him off a year ago.)

I have to say, my teeth look and feel a lot better, so I guess it's worth it.

(Bill [Bassman 10096]-don't feel too bad, I'm 57 years old.]

Eric: You are my hero. I lasted exactly 4 hours with the bite plate before I was back at the ortho getting "bite stops" (bonding material attached to your lower molars) installed to keep my teeth from closing completely and ruining the brackets. You are also right about hunger curing chewing problems - at some point you just stop caring and chow down the best you can.

I'll tell y'all a funny short story. First of all, I'm 44; and I got my braces roughly 30 years ago. It was a very different world at that point. I had to wear 'em for about 2 years (+/-) and then I had to wear a "retainer" for another year or two. Do they still have/use those? I assume "they" do.

Well, I discovered one day while watching a Star Trek episode, and (attempting to) make the "phaser" sound while Kirk or the Enterprise was blasting the Klingons or something... that I could change the channels!

Something about the noise/sound of attempting to make the "phaser" sound with my mouth and retainer...

Now I think the technology was a little different then. I remember we also discovered that shaking the link-chain collar our dog wore would also change the channels and/or turn off the TV. And it was an unpredictable effect... not something you could fully control.

But... I could do SOMETHING everytime... turn off the TV and/or change channels. I thought it was really cool and kind of fun. One day, on the school bus, I told some of my fellow students that I could change the channels of my TV with my retainer, and "they" (the masses) basically "went to town" teasing me and saying I was making it all up!!! This botherered the crap out of me, and I told them it was so and I could prove it if they came over and saw it. I even made a couple of my friends in our neighborhood witness it... but none of them were inclined to publicly testify on my behalf!!!

Anyway...

Thought I'd share that with you!

Good luck with the braces; it should be worth it in the long run although it'll be annoying in the short run. Take extra care to clean your teeth as much as you can while they're on (don't overdo it, you can wear down your enamel). When you finally get them off there'll probably be "tan marks" from where they were... but you can adjust this with a cleaning and time.

Take care, good luck with it all!

PS... did you do any research and listen to any Dead yet?

yeah but I don't care all that much for Grateful Dead. see, I'm 12 yrs. (I know, It's probably amazing that I'm [somewhat] awesome at guitar and bass and have a metalcore band. I've been doing this crap since 5th grade!)

I'll only have my braces till I'm, like, 15.

trust me, if you're into death metal at 12, you'll be listening to the dead and smelling of patchouli by the time your braces are off.

Don't worry Jared, it doesn't have to be that way. I have been mildly annoyed by the Dead my whole life, and I'm 48. After being raised on folk and Creedence Clearwater Revival, I fell in love with punk rock in 1978. My love for punk has never faded, and my appreciation for the Dead has never grown. You'll be o.k. son...... :-)

Ha!

I'm with Ayn Rand on the folk music thing. Bleh.

And why someone would deliberately wear a scent that smells like a three day old gym sock, I can't fathom.

But hey, whatever floats your boat.

no one said i disliked death metal, or punk rock for that matter. i just said there's always a hippie jamfest part of just about everyone's life.
i went from death metal to the dead to john zorn and peter brotzmann within 4 years.
btw, i'm going to be putting some of my band's tunes up soon. crazy free power noise, that's where it's at ;)
wtfe you're into.

By no means am I judging anyones taste, I was simply trying to give the young man some perspective ;-)

But I have a theory about aesthetic preferences. I believe they are hard wired, or genetic in origin.

Why is it that one 16 year old can take a puff of a cigarette and run in revulsion, while another can take a puff and be hooked for life. Same with alchohol. Why is it that one 16 year old can hear the Grateful Dead, and be launched on a lifelong journey of admiration and, dare I say it, compulsion, while another can hear the Dead, yawn, and move on. I don't think it matters whether you were exposed to Joni Mitchell or Beethoven in the womb, I think, by the luck of our genes, we are blessed/cursed with natural receptors for all kinds of aesthetics, and if you happen to get exposed to something your predestined to accept, bam zoom, thats all she wrote.

My musical taste are quite wide and varied, some things I enjoy make others cringe in mere seconds, and some are very mainstream. Yet there is plenty of music I just never connected with. The music I love took no effort to enjoy, and the music I don't enjoy, I have been unable to learn to appreciate. I tried for years to learn to grok the Dead, and I could never make it happen. Took a nice nap from 1AM to 3AM during a new years eve show in 1979? It's not a matter of good or bad, or degree of sophistication, we just get wired that way and we are stuck with it.

Some music, when heard for the very first time, induces an involuntary, physiological reaction in me, just as if a beautiful woman walked into the room. That's not a learned consideration, that's my reptilian brain sparking.

Back to the thread, I never had braces, but some say I should have!

As a child, I was regularly exposed to avantgarde music. I'm pretty sure this has had an effect on my ability to appreciate music. For instance, Mozart is below my comfort level for complexity: most of his work is annoyingly simple to my ears. And it really doesn't help if it's a great musician pouring all his/her talent into performing the piece.

I'm not just into Death Metal. I'm also into Punk(alot), metalcore, screamo, rock, Black Metal(Metal in general is a genre i like a lot[any kind really]), you know, that kind of stuff. Furthermore............

Wait a minut, why did we all of a sudden start talking about music. I thought we were talking about braces.
