I know that a lot of us are here because of some association with the Grateful Dead /Jerry Garcia. I would love to here some war stories from the past, especially since some of you guys/gals were seeing them in the early/mid 1970's. My first Jerry show was in Eugene, OR in 1993 with my uncle (who saw 500 GD shows). Beautiful day they very well changed my life.....well forever!! |

My favorite Dead moment, well, my only Dead moment, is my memory from a new years eve show, 1979 I think. It was either Winterland or the Cow Palace, I can't remember which. But from 1:30am to 3:00am I had the most restful nap I've ever taken at a rock show. When I woke up I was straight enough to drive home. Good times.............. James |

There is something to be said for the existance of a concert where it is not only it safe for you to take a nap if you feel it needed but also accepted and with out malicious repercussions ;) |

Since the topic is "Jerry Show" as opposed to "Dead Show", I'll offer two (though I guess neither is technically a "Jerry Show" either)- one with Jerry, one without: 1. March 1974 I drove up from L.A. to the Bay Area for the Sound Check at the Cow Palace (official unveiling of the Wall of Sound). A night or two before, my friends and I went to the Keystone Berkeley to catch the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Buddy Cage had long since replaced Jerry on Pedal Steel. As the second set was getting under way, Jerry jumped up on stage (I believe with Alligator, IIRC) and played guitar the rest of the night. When the show was over, as the crowd was milling about, I looked up from my seat (we had arrived early and had a table), and standing right there in front of me was Jerry. I shook his hand and thanked him for all the wonderful music I'd heard him play over the years. My buddy asked if he was going to get stoned. Jerry smiled, said "you know it!" and was off. 2. On a highlight day of my life, Melvin Seals and JGB played my wedding in 2001. (A buddy was their guitar player that year). I got to jam with them. James: The New Years show 1979-1980 was at the Oakland Auditorium Arena (later named "Kaiser Auditorium"). New Years 1978-1979 was at Winterland. Both great shows. i have to go with a couple 1973- i was invited on the hells angel ferry ride up the hudson river as a roadie for a band from montana. them, jerry band and bo diddley sat with jerry while he noodled away on the bow of the boat and discussed sci fi movies with him, i looked around trying to find a way to toss john kahn overboard. lol later on i was leaning on his amp while he played. ran into jerry again a week later standing behind the stage at nassau before the show and looked down and there he was again. we nodded hello and i asked to come down backstage and was waved down by jerry as he motioned the security guy,. july 74= jerry and merl at the bottom line- night before- john lennon sat in front of me- the entire place stood and had a toast to john. next day i walk past and i hear them playing at 1pm, i opened the door, saw jerry and went in and sat there for an hour. |
