So, taking my first ever trip to N'Orleans next weekend, March 14th - 18th. Taking the little lady. Would love some recommendations from y'all- any "can't miss" venues or shows? Museums, restaurants, etc? We'll be staying right in the French Quarter, and it is of course St. Pat's Day, so there will be plenty of stuff to do. We've been perusing the requisite guide books and websites (nola.com is a good starting point), but just want to make sure I don't miss something outstanding. The little lady really wants to see Trombone Shorty, but his myspace indicates a private party for that weekend. Mr. Delacerda, any gigs lined up over that weekend? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I was there about 10 years ago. Amongst the many fine eating establishments that I tried, the one that stands out for me was in the French Quarter (obviously) and it was called "Two Jacks". Highly reccomended if it's still around. Ellery (Lowlife) | ||

I don't have anything that weekend yet. I am booked on the 8th of this month, but no calls yet for the following weekend. If something comes up, I will post and you can come by! Lots of stuff to do here. If the little lady wants to see Trombone Shorty, then she really must be into the New Orleans music scene. There's Donna's on Rampart street that plays good music, and there are a bunch of venues on Frenchman street that I know she will like. Places like Snug Harbor often have great jazz acts. Of course there is decent stuff all around here. When you get here, pick up a Gambit or Off Beat magazine. They are everywhere and free. They list everything happening. Tujaques (pronounced Two Jacks) is definately a good place to eat. It is right on Decatur Street across from Morning call. If you come here, you MUST go to Morning call. It is just coffee and beignets (sort of like a donut), but it helps soak up the alcohol. Flax recommends the mufalletta. I do too, but if you get one, make sure you get it from the Central or Progress grocery on Decatur street. And definately get it WITH the mortadella. There are soooo many restaurants here, you would have to live here to check them all out. I guess that's why I'm so fat! You know if you wait a little while, you could come by during Jazzfest season. The city really wakes up for that festival. It is always the last weekend of April and the 1st weekend of May. Great music everywhere that whole week! Michael | ||

I have had a love hate relationship with New Orleans. I went to the Widespread Panic shows in NOLA for their 3 night runs in 1999, 2000, 2001. I also went to the Jazz Fest shows in 1999 and 2001. Great city for music, but I was almost robbed at knifepoint on Bourbon Street in 2002 and I have not been back since. That said, you really have to visit Tipitina's. The great funk band Galactic has their homebase there, as does the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It is my favorite music venue in that city, outside the Saenger Theatre. The music of NOLA has been just great for my edumacation .  Dr. John, Professor Longhair, The Radiators, The Neville Brothers, Allan Toussaint. Jerryme - You are right, I know what you mean. I've had a knife at my neck too. Also a gun to my head. You really have to watch where you go. I also find that folks acting as tourists are sitting ducks. You know, looking lost, cameras around their neck, that sort of thing. But, it's happened to me too and I live here! Usually Bourbon Street is fairly crime free because it is so crowded, but there are sections of the Quarter I would not recommend going to. I mentioned Donna's on Rampart street in an earlier post. That is really one of the roughest places to go! You really have to be careful in that area. If you are in any doubt about what neighborhoods to avoid, just give me a call when you get here. My phone number is in my profile here. I will be able to make some recommendations. If it were me, I would stay in Metairie, and just drive to New Orleans for the sights. But you are right, there is nothing like the musical education you can get here. Everytime I get to play with other New Orleans musicians I get to learn something. A lot of the musicians here take an unconventional route to playing, but I guess that is part of the color. You are right about Tipitina's. Tips is a great place to see and there's always great acts there too. | ||

The Circle Bar(It's in Lee's Circle) is a great place to hang, great music there too. Snug Harbor on Frenchman Street always has great Jazz. The Quater is great but don't forget to go Uptown. Just follow Magazine down to the Zoo and you will run into all types of very good places to shop and eat. | ||

Ever notice how when you're just about to leave for vacation, trying to run out the door, they throw a ton of stuff on yer desk? Man, I hate that.... So apologies for not posting sooner. Just wanted to drop a quick line and thank everyone for their suggestions (and warnings. NYC is getting tame; always good to keep yer guard up). And Michael, doubly thanks for offering up yer digits, too kind. I will shoot you a text message with my phone number (look for a 718) when I get there tomorrow (Fri), just so you have it in case you get a last minute gig or find out Stan Clarke is playing a top secret show with Maceo Parker in some hole in wall... seriously, if anything super cool comes up, clue me in.
