In this case he went from a single pickup to two pickups. You can see the wood patch in some of the photos. Why replace the Alembic electronics only the owner can answer that. To me it's not a big deal if the original electronics can be put back in. In this case however it is not possible to restore it to original condition. That modification has (in my opinion) ruined the Bass. It may have a nice sound and (being an Alembic) I'm sure it plays and feels great, but it's no longer an Excel.
