I was watching some old Level 42 footage, and wondered if that thumb cap thing that Mark king wears on his thumb is there for sound or to stop his thumb falling apart, i remember flea using super glue on his thumb on some tour doco, as his thumb was falling apart due to so much playing... anyone know the history there? |

I'm 99.9% sure you're seeing black electrical tape that he used to stop his thumb from splitting. Toby PS: Good luck in your bass search- I know what it's like trying to get an Alembic down to the land of the Long Gray Cloud. If you find one and it's coming from the US you'll be limited in carriers. I ended up buying from a club member and we used Fed Ex. They weren't my first choice, but UPS was incredibly expensive and the USPS won't take packages that large anymore. |

It's Black electrical tape Matthew. At the end of his shows he peals it off and throws it into the audience just like guitarists do with their plectrums. Not sure I'd want to pick up a roll of sweaty black tape ;-) graeme |

The Land of the Long Gray Cloud? Haven't heard that one before. BTW, Ben, I checked out your music on myspace. Ghosty Head has some good stuff. I enjoyed it. Sorry about the thread highjack but there's only so much to be said about a length of electrical tape. Sam |

I thought he used gaffer's tape-- it offers a slightly less nasal midrange than electrical tape. Bradley |

Sam, Aeoteroa is what the Maori call(ed) what we now know of as New Zealand- it means, "Land of the Long White Cloud." Those who are from NZ or have lived there for a spell will commonly refer to is as "Land of the Long Gray Cloud" based on the amount of rainfall seen in some parts. A plectrum is a pick, a word of perhaps Greek or Latin origin. Mike |
