George died in California yesterday (Sunday the 22nd) of a heart related condition. A giant talent in the tradition of Lenny Bruce and Mark Twain. He, along with Mel Brooks, Firesign Theater, Monty Python, Richard Pryor, and Gene Wilder helped me to get through the 60s and 70s with deadly accurate and hilarious observations on the human condition here on the 3rd stone.
I'll miss his point of view.

My favorite was his Baseball vs. Football routine. A true comic with a conscience. And only 71. (I know I'm getting on myself when I truly think "only 71"!)

George's take on Richard Pryor (paraphrased as I remember it):

Richard and I have a competition, I lead on heart attacks, but he leads on setting himself on fire.

I took three CDs to work today and inundated my roommates with classsic Carlin: FM & AM; Class Clown; and An Evening with Wally Londo ...

"Would that then be a sin, Father?"

I think that "Class" thing was Cheech and Chong, actually.

Damn. Comedy as we know it (or at least as I love it) started with Carlin & Prior. I'm bummed.

Peter
ps- Will's right about "Class...." That's "Sister Mary Elephant" - track 1, side 1 of Big Bambú by Cheech y Chong.

pps- Does anyone know how to do italics on here?

ppps - Thanks, Adriaan - and check out George's stuff - he was a freakin' genius!

Peter,

Italics are done this way - as in: \i, then a {, the text you want italicized, and finally a }. After the \i there should be no blank before the {.

Bold is with \b - and so on, checkthe Help/Instructions link at the bottom of the page.

One thing I haven't found is how to include an image that was uploaded in an earlier posting. It's easy to find out the number given to the image, but it doesn't say anywhere what formatting tag to use when trying to show it in another message.

Apologies for stepping in on an RIP thread - but to be totally honest, until today I'd never heard of George Carlin.
