Well, It's about 4 in the morning, and I can't sleep. So-What do I do------I go into the living room where my 4 bases are and pick up one. Is it the Curbows-----nope!! Is it my 76 Series1--nope!!! It's my 75 Precision bass!!!! Why should I favour this bass to my others?? Is it that lovely woody bark that only comes with an old P bass?? I don't know-it just sounds the bass for me-plug in and play, and get a wonderful sound-even with passive electronics! All psychological help will be appreciated here. George | ||

Don't over analyze. Consider this. Compared to all the potential activities you could pursue, you choose a bass guitar. Does it really matter which one? | ||

No pints at 4 in the morning Olie!! James-I just can't put my finger on it. The sound, the look, the feel. If I had to go and do some gig or recording session, I think I would take the P Bass!! I'm playing locally on the 20th of this month, and it's as sure as hell, that the P will be the bass of choice for the gig. I know that I could take the Series 1 with me, as the venue is not a rough neck dive----but!!?? Danno-loved the Freud lines!! Made me laugh so much. I have the complete works in my library!! To all of you---I'm a qualified Psychologist and can't figure it out myself. Should I just stick with the P bass and sell the Series?? I know a couple of guys here in Scotland that would love to get their hands on her. I just seem so confused as to my "loyalties" at the moment after buying this thing George | ||

George- The pendulum swings- as surely as it swings, it will swing back.... and then back the other way again. Don't sell the Series. You'll always miss that sound if you do sell it. Toby | ||

Hi Toby, I suppose you're right. The Series is spectacular in everything she does---but there again, so is the P bass!! I have a small grounding problem with her at the moment, but nothing that a soldering iron or £30 can't fix. I just think that I love this bass as much as my Series, hence the reason I'm looking for psychiatric help. I'm just confused as to why something so simple, can "equal" something so complicated, and let's be honest, the Series is complicated-try getting the same sound twice from it if you forget the Q settings. No such story with the P bass! It also makes me wonder about the "neck through/bolt on argument. I've got a maple neck on this one, and there are absolutely NO dead spots on her at all, which is nigh on unheard of with maple necks I think I'll take a couple of tablets now and go and rest--but thanks for your advice. I'll keep the Series as well-Sorry Graeme and Mike. This may be the reason that Rami has about 8000 basses. It's a mood thing Thanks for listening George | ||

George - put it down to new love...emotions are powerful things as you will surely know! There is something definitive about good vintage fender basses - its like you say, just plug them in and that sound and feel is instantly there!! Once you grow to know her every aspect you will become entirely familiar with her and the new love will slowly reside to out and out appreciation and admiration...at this point you will remember old loves and be glad of their faithful companionship and familiarity also! Oh, and make that three Scottish members out here in the wilderness who would love to get their hands on your series! Hope this helps you sleep at night  John. | ||

The Navigator cable is about to be fixed!! You know, I've been a little stupid and somewhat brash in my assumptions about these 2 basses. Through the Nvigator, I'd set the P bass up so that it sang like a bird! Then, I plugged the Series in and set the EQ to a more Alembic sound Result Straight away, I got the sound of Stanley on the "Journey to Love" album. The sound, clarity etc was stunning!! and I mean STUNNING!! This was just on the front pup, as the jack socket only does this when used monorally So there is NO WAY the Series is for sale!!-I just needed a decent preamp to shape the sound!! Surely the Navigator has to be the best (or one of the best) preamps on the market!!! I'm back to thinking ALEMBIC! Although, with the EQ set up properly, the P bass is a killer!! Thanks for introducing me to the EDEN NAVIGATOR Graeme!!! Best thing I've ever heard George | ||

LOL!! Thanks John You know , what you say is absolutely right She is my latest purchase, and we all like to play with our new toys! It's just (I think) that I love the Series sound AND I love the sound of the older P bass. GREAT I've got both!! Get ONE JOHN!!!! | ||

George, I have had a couple of really nice vintage Jazz basses - one of which was very special! I traded it with the bass player in the band "Hue and cry" for one of his Vigier Passions. Needless to say the Vigier is long gone (a shame) and the jazz is being loved by some lucky person out there! John. | ||

my Fender basses sound and feel great.... AT HOME, WHILE PLAYING ALONE! when playing with a band, they sound like mud uh yes, I'll keep the series bass forever good luck with your dilemma! | ||

I'll be keeping the Series. There is no doubt about that, and like yours, is a 1976 model. I've got band practice next week, so I'm taking the P bass to hear her in that sort of situation. I'll post the results the following day. Thanks Spose George | ||

George, if it helps, my go-to basses are my 73 Rickenbacker 4000 and my 72 Rickenbacker 4001. They don't do everything, but what they do suits me 99% of the time. Instruments are like art; it's not always the most technically accomplished, sophisticated artists who speak to us the most. Just think of your P Bass as Van Gogh..... | ||

Hey Graeme, maybe Herb Trimpe as opposed to Neal Adams then (all comic fans who actually know what I'm talking about hold up their hands!!! ). I'm actually most excited about Janek Gwizdala (who I missed 2 years ago as I popped out for some food), Richard Bona and Yolanda again. Never seen Richard so am really looking forward to him. | ||

There have always been rumoours those early Marvel artists were stoned on LSD all the time. I couldn't possibly comment ;-) Did you catch Janek at the end of BD 2006 when he sat in with stefan Redtenbacker's band - no rehearsal and read some of the most amazing basslines straight from the sheet! Yolanda was excellent last time too -- had some very good advice about learning to sing and play that's come in useful. I'd not heard much RQichard Bona till this year but he's been a revelation. I really hope they keep the same format as last year with a house 'rhythm section'. Graeme | ||

Well looking at Steve Ditko's Dr Strange and Jim Starlin's Warlock run (2 of my favourite series I hasten to add) I suspect something stronger than Anadin ;-) Unfortunately I missed most of Stefan's performance as I had to get the train home. I saw Janek warming up a very close range (not plugged in); phenomenal. Yeah, Yolanda was fab. Was talking to her guitarist (who is also a bassist)in the Gallery a while back; lovely,lovely bloke. I must admit I didn't enjoy BDUK so much last year; it seemed a bit chaotic, my mate Stu wasn't in the best mood, and I was getting a tension headache from carrying that Spector round (and possibly also hearing so many punters who all sounded the same, which was driving me a bit nuts) but I'm really looking forward to this year. Note to self; see everybody, play everything! | ||

Ha! Nice basses though, and a nice bloke (wouldn't mind a Daphne Blue Rumour). He was staggered that the Spector only cost £700. Shame about that bass; in the shop it sounded fantastic, but it didn't get on with my rig at all, and as I went out on a limb financially to buy it in the first place there was no way I could afford to change my rig. So back it went... |
