I'll be taking a trip to New York City (my first!) October 9-12, staying in Manhattan and I'm looking suggestions for: Music Stores Liquor Stores Live Jazz (especially Thursday & Friday night, maybe Sunday afternoon). Thanks in advance. | ||

Michael: A trip to New York is not complete without a visit to 48th Street between 6th Avenue (aka "Avenue of the Americas") and 7th Avenue. Manny's, Sam Ash, & Rudy's are still there, along with a few others IIRC. Matt Umanov's in the Village is an institution. Rivington Street guitars is a cool little shop that caters to the unusual, rare, old, and downright weird. For acoustic instruments, Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island is tops. Know that the 48th Street stores don't keep long hours, so I wouldn't plan an evening trip. Several of them used to start closing as early as 5pm. Additionally, while it is still worth visiting, it is nothing like it was 20-30 years ago. Sam Ash has expanded to replace a couple of the old independent shops which, to me, takes away from the ambiance. "We Buy Guitars" was a sight to see back in the day. | ||

as far as jazz clubs, you should definitely check out the village vanguard while in town. if my memory serves me correctly bill charlap's trio will be playing while you're there. the vanguard (although unreasonably expensive) is a place you should check out, given all the history. without checking the schedules, places like the stone, the iridium, the 55 bar, cornelia st. cafe, etc... the blue note, as well, but i wouldnt suggest it. have fun in the city | ||

Another thought: If you can extend your trip just a little, Les Paul plays at the Iridium Room every Monday night. If he's still doing the same show I saw a few years ago, anyone from the audience can get up on stage and jam with him! The man is definitely worth seeing. Not only can he play, but his stories in between songs (stuff like "how I came up with multi-tracking") are incredible. Bill, tgo | ||

A magical place..definitely get to 48th st and Rudy's..it is where I bought my Alembic MK bass back in 1998..he signed the reciept. Second time I went I managed to catch the YellowJackets ay Birdland and talk to Jimmy Haslip. | ||

Rudy's is the only high end shop left and without meaning to offend any one the only real music shop left on 48th street IMHO. Manny's was bought out in bankrupt court some years ago by Sam Ash and then they expanded it to include a west coast store. So Rudy's and Sam Ash are the only action happening on 48th street.I only mention this out of respect for your time. Times Square is worth experiencing. Matt Umanov's is worth the trip down to the village. His shop is on Bleeker Street. The Blue Note is a great Jazz club.Somethings always cooking at BB Kings on 42nd St.,if you want to stay in the 48th/times sq.area. Ubiquitous Bars and Liquor stores abound. |
