Coming up in Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music on November 9th. it's well worth a visit - I've met several Alembic players there over the past 4 years and have made quite a few 'other brand' friends too. Live music will be provided by the likes of TM stevens, Yolanda Charles, Richard Bona and Hadrien Feraud and there'll most likely be a decent gathering of trade stands. As usual I'll be travelling down with my sidekick, Mike Pisanek, so if you're going, keep an eye out for us. As an aside, it looks like I'll have 2 spare seats in my car so if anyone wants to go from central scotland (or anywhere between edinburgh and Manchester) and wants to share petrol costs, get in touch. see www.bassday.co.uk for more details. Had a great day! Bumped into Graeme and Mike doing the rounds. The highlights for me were Dave Marks and band, Yolanda Charles (as always), Janek Gwizdala, and most importantly Richard Bona, who I thought was the most amazing musician I've seen since Buddy Rich. Truly inspirational. Also bumped into TM Stevens in a pizza place afterwards and had a chat; what a great guy! | ||

On a not completely unrelated note, I bought an instrument cable that turned out to be the TM Stevens signature "FunkMaster" cable from Klotz. Price-wise it was halfway between Planet Waves and Monster. I'll have to A/B it with my Cordial/Neutrik (which was misplaced until last week-end) but I think it's close - pretty good. | ||

I also had a superb day despite developing flu throughout the day (I've been off work since). The highlight for me was definitely T.M. Stevens who I've wanted to see live since I heard his 'Supernatural' on the 1995 trace Elliot compilation CD 'Also available in green' and BOY! was he worth the wait. He was playing with a trio -'Swans in flight' that he'd only met 2 days previously at the Birmingham guitar show but they were as tight as any band I've heard.  As Shaun said, Yolanda Charles was superb, playing with her band of session musicians, all of whom have pretty impressive resumes...  Richard Bona was another highlight.  He chose not to put any Bass through the PA so the auditorium was deathly silent as we listened to his playing and singing. Interestingly, his tone was as clear as a bell playing through 2 EBS rigs. When Janek Gwizalda came on, using one of the same rigs he had a very dull, muffled tone, as did Hadrien Feraud earlier in the day playing through a Markbass rig. Not a very good advertisement for their respective manufacturers, even if that was the tone they were aiming for. Actually, for me, the best tone of the day came from Yolanda's Mesa Boogie rig. Food for thought. I have to say (and shaun will probably disagree), I thought there was too much jazz noodling. Both feraud and Gwizalda whilst being superb musicians seemed to me to be very self-indulgent, playing what sounded like very similar 2000 notes a second scales and arpeggios. I'd prefer to hear tunes I can go home humming. Incidentally, all the drummers that took part were phenomenally good. Looking forward to next year. Graeme | ||

To be honest Graeme, I thought Janek was great, but I really like his stuff. However Hadrien left me cold. I left after 2 numbers. I thought TM was great as expected; although his tone wasn't to my taste, his playing was fab (I get the impression he doesn't need a drummer; he is a groove machine!). Thing is stylistically I love just about everything from noodly to Lemmy (he should be on next year!). To me its down to the individual artist or piece of music; I love Mclaughlin but am not overly keen on Holdsworth, love Sabbath but am not overly keen on Metallica etc. I love Garrison but Feraud didn't do anything for me. I love tunes too (as a songwriter first and foremost I have to!); ABBA are one of my favourite bands of all time and I wont have a bad word said against them! I just hope next year they get Tal.....*sigh* BTW, I've got flu too! 2nd year running...unfortunately I'm still at work; loads to do and an important charity gig on Thursday which I've got to try and get through.
