I have a Sting signature P-bass. It's like one of the pre 57 models, and the jack plate's loose. I don't know much about tightening these kind of jacks. Help?? | ||

Have you tried tightening the jack retaining nut with a nut driver yet? If you already have and it still seems loose, there's not too much else you can do to really give the jack assembly a nice, tight feel. On this design (which is the same as is used on Telecaster guitars, and is notoriously fragile), the output jack is held in place by "sandwiching" itself between the jack cup on the outside surface and a rather flimsy piece of bent metal on the inside surface of the control cavity. It's really easy to flex out that piece of metal if, say, you accidentally step on your cord while plugged into the instrument. Solution: always put a "strain relief" into your cord by running it through your strap before plugging it in. Other than that, about the only other thing that can be done is to replace the whole thing with a METAL "Les Paul"-type jack plate - but then, you're cobbling-up the bass to improve upon what was a bad design to begin with! |
