A friend is using an ancient Roland JC120 head on picolo bass primarily for the vintage stereo chorus effect. He wants to upgrade his rig but can't bear to lose the Roland Chorus effects. One way would be to take a pre out from the JC120 and run it into a modern power amp - but the JC120 is a bit cumbersome to lug around as a preamp. Does anyone know of modern rack or pedal effects that emulate the Roland JC effects? |

It all goes back to what/how you hear. Some people think the modern effects that replicate the 'old' devices are just fine, and others think NOTHING sounds like the original. Roland/BOSS make any number of chorus devices, as well as loads of other manufacturers. For me, the easiest way to get that chorus sound (noticeably thicker/dirtier than a modern digital device) would be to find a vintage BOSS CE-1 chorus, the old grey one. It also replicates the tremelo of the JC amps. For me, the BEST chorus is the TC pedal. Just fabulous sound, uttterly addicting. I can only imagine it with an 8-string . .. J o e y |

Joey, any idea what the difference is between the CE-5 and the CH-1 in the current lineup? |

dnburgess It's the TC Electronic SCF pedal (S tereo C horus F langer). It's chorus or flange, mono or stereo, has an input gain w/a clip light (!), and it's AC powered. It's analog and been in continuous production for 25 years. With the input gain, you can keep it VERY quiet, and the tone is fabulous. Years ago,it was THE hot ticket for Rhodes piano players. Typical (first rate) TC build quality. www.tcelectronic.com I'm afraid BOSS makes so many chorus pedals, I haven't tried the two you mention. J o e y |
