I have noticed a large number of basses (Sukop, Fodera, etc...) in the single-cutaway style.

I think they are unnatractive.

Anyone seen any they like?

I couldn't stand to even look at them at first, but I have since been seduced by their unconventional looks.

Favourites?,Fodera,Benevente and Adler.

I would LOVE to see the Alembic take on the genre.

For the most part I don't like any of the newer single-cutaway basses. The only exception I can think of is Anthony Jackson's contrabass...

There might be others that I like. I guess the look can grow on you.

Here is a previous thread that discusses a couple Alembic examples (with links to pictures)

I kind of like some of the Alfonso Iturra basses too. I've never heard one or seen one up close though.

I do like Les Paul style basses. Weird that Gibson don't make them any more - the only Gibson branded basses in their catalogue are the T-Bird and SG.

I like the Elrick single cut. There's a pic of one at atlantabassgallery.com.

I like the Torbert bass. Mind you, I like Torbert, too.

I also like the Les Paul style - I have a'69 or'70 (69 I think) Les Paul bass, which has a great woody deep sound. Unbelievably heavy though - my 51-year-old back can barely take it, so I don't use it to gig much. Besides, the Alembic is better. But the Gib has a nice sound and a nice feel. And looks great. I will post a pic someday.

Like many here I initially found the single cut style to be unnatractive - but I must say they have really grown on me now...I love them!

I havent played one at all so Im not sure of their comfort/playability/balance in this respect but I particularly like the Fodera version very much (Anthony Jackson, Matt Garrison-see my other thread here "the new breed")

The Fodera seems to have a wonderful tone also so it looks a winner to me! The Elrick is nice and so too is the Bennavente.

I think its good to break moulds and stretch the "norm" - I am a big Carl Thompson fan in this respect also.

John.

Hey white cloud, if you dig Carl Thompsons, you should check out Eshenbaugh basses. They look identical, and I think the luthier was trained by Thompson. Again, pics on the atlantabassgallery.com site....

Hi Eligilam, thanks for the advice I appreciate it! I will check out Esenbaugh.

I currently own two of these handmade Prometeus basses, this one is solid Zebrawood body, Padauk neck and Maccasar Ebony fingerboard!

I honestly think CT would be proud of this bass!

I've never really cared for the single cutaway basses either. I would imagine it would add some stability to the neck though. Especially a set neck or bolt on.
But now a single cutaway guitar, ES-335 or LES Paul, I like them.

Um, Olie, we know you're a bass player, so we'll let it slide :-), but while the ES-137, 147, 175, 225, 295, & 350, among others, are single cuts, the ES-335 is indeed possessed of 2 Venetian cut-aways. And while we should always remember the Byrdland, can we forget Ted?
As to single-cut basses, I've always loved the looks of a Les Paul Triumph or a Gretsch Broadkaster or the like (or, of course, Torbert's), but these new ones that have the bass bout at about the 3rd fret & the treble bout at the 56th (or so they look) leave me cold. They just look unbalanced to me (though there are those who would tell you that the unbalance is internal).

What does it say about a manufacturer if they need a single cut-away to stabilize the neck?

OOPS. I stand corrected CC. I'll take may 30 lashes with the "B" string. I did mean a 350, I used to own a 335. Where was my head at? I also had a L6S that was a simgle cut.

As for Les Pauls, I prefer the early dbl cuts.

IMHO, the Guild M-85 is one of the cooler single cuts. http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/guildM85.php
