For some reason, I just can't seem to get too excited about the current Dead tour. I didn't go last night and I'll be out of town for Thursday night's show. I also HATE the Shoreline Amphitheater where you had to spend 3 figures, or watch from another zip code! (All those shows in Winterland/Kaiser/Warfield/Greek spoiled me). ahhhhh But tomorrow night I'm seeing the Allman Brothers at the Fox Oakland, a newly renovated (and re-opened after being closed for 35+ years) Art Deco Palace. I'm REALLY looking forward to this one. Anyone else from the club going? Bill, tgo |

I would like to put forth the suggestion that perhaps Derek Trucks is the most amazing guitar player of his generation (or at least the most amazing one playing stuff that a crotchety old fart like me will listen to.) I watched a 30-minute video of ABB the other day, & I'm prepared to swear that the amount of motion visible in his hands could not have possibly made that many notes - the kid's a freakin' Jedi, playing with his mind! (In the course of which, I might add, he was also playing with mine.) I'd love to see him with the Dead. Peter (Message edited by cozmik_Cowboy on May 14, 2009) |

I've been following the young careers of Derek Trucks and pedal steel player, Robert Randolph for last several years. Derek Trucks seems to be really distinguishing himself lately. His playing with ABB has been a treat and own band is excellent as well. Another great young player to check out is Joe Bonamassa. I'm looking forward to ABB in Vegas Memorial Day weekend! Peace |

Derek Trucks appeared to be the fastest, yet cleanest slide guy I've seen. And extremely tasty too! Robert Randolph I just don't get. I saw him open for Santana 2 or 3 years ago. I swear he never touched a pedal or a knee lever once that I saw. He played the pedal steel like a lap steel. Sure, he could play putting his feet up on top, or leaning the whole instrument over, I think he might even have done the "play with your teeth" trick, but I wasn't impressed at all with his "pedal steel" playing. I was impressed when he and his band kept swapping instruments with each other. Anyway I just got a call from an old client with an extra Dead ticket for tonight, so I'm off to the Dead after all. Robert Randolph comes from the Sacred Steel, Gospel tradition of, among others, The Campbell Brothers (perhaps a bit of an acquired taste) - I'm not sure RR is quite there yet, however. Enjoy The Dead tonight, Bill. I'm very interested to hear what your impressions are. I was reluctant to drive to LA to the show at the Forum and didn't have very high expectations, but the boys played exceptionally well and really blew my mind! Glad I didn't blow it off. |
