Pretty much all the above. He had an interesting sense of note choice and placement. I first noticed him on the Al Kooper/Mike Bloomfield Live Adventures record way back when. I have to admit, there were many times I thought his bass was too busy, overbearing, too far out front. But he kept me interested nonetheless. Not too many people have a lot to say about Kahn. I'd be interested in other opinions on his playing. | ||

I actually like John Kahn's playing quite a bit. I think he did alot to really drive the music in the JG band. While he was upfront and busy as a player, I think in the context of the JG band it was done in such a way that fit fairly well. Also, his playing is "accessable" but still fairly interesting. I would say he is one of my top five favorite players of all time (with the other four being Phil, Jack, JPJ, and depending on my mood JE). | ||

I didn't mean to imply that I didn't like his playing - just that it surprises me a bit that I do, so much. He definitely led and filled much space, but every time I'd question his playing, I'd hear something that was a "wow" for me. I saw him with JG a couple of times and he had a real flair for dramatic lines and dynamics. I would count him among my A-list of influences, along with Phil, JC, Macca, Jack Bruce. |
