I meant to mark the aniversary of his death a few days ago but life got in the way. Anyway, Mickey Houser, the lead guitar player for Widespread Panic, died of Pancreatic cancer 7 years ago August 10th (August is the worst month of all). He left behind a wife and two kids....
I first saw Mikey play guitar on 4-18-96, and from then till the time he died I saw him play around 100 times, from New York to California, and all points in between. He was one of the most somber, interesting, and dynamic guitar players I have ever heard, second only to Jerry Garcia. One of the most emotional things I have ever gone through was when he made it public that he had terminal cancer, and still continued to play in front of thousands of adoring fans, just tearing it up with a smile on his face and a song in his heart.
I was 16 when Jerry died, and even though I had seen 4 shows it didn't feel like I had lost a family member. When Mikey died it was like I had lost a brother. Fare thee well old buddy....
