This is sad news. Les was nothing short of amazing. A few years ago, my wife and I were visiting my family in New York. We were staying at the Empire Hotel near Lincoln Center. As we pulled up in the early evening and handed the car over to the valet, I pulled my Baby Taylor out of the trunk. Seeing the guitar, the valet asked if I'd ever heard of Les Paul and I said "of course". He then pointed to the door to the Iridium Room, next to the hotel, and told us Les was playing down there in 20 minutes. We dropped our things off in the room and ran downstairs to the club. We found a surprisingly tiny room and spent the rest of the night totally mezmerized by Les. He played, told stories, even invited the audience members to come up on stage and play or sing with him! Les had a special talent that I've found only the finest players possess - the ability to make me laugh with his playing (not laugh at it - he could play humorously, like a great comedian with impeccable comic timing!) A true great without whom we might not even be here in this forum. May the Four Winds Blow You Safely Home. Bill, tgo |

This is really sad news. But I wish I would reach that age of him. Anyway this was the person that influenced millions of guitar players, maybe not with his playing but with his name..... Oliver (Spyderman) |

Wow, It's hard to believe that he's gone. He seemed like one of those larger than life icons who would live forever. I wonder how many kids grow up today playing Les Paul's who don't even know there was a man behind the endorsement. Certainly a sad bit of news. |

What a generation he covered and how he helped to put us all in a working environment with an instrument that would change music as they knew to the way we know it, to how our children's children hear it and there children will for all time to come. Les Paul A guided genius of musical prophecy fulfilled, within a life time of success, who could ask for more and to leave a legacy to all of us that will always be remembered RIP LES you earned it! |

Okay I was one of the lucky ones to get on stage back in 1998 when I visited New York, the same time when I bought my MK from Rudy Penshur's. Luckily I can play enough guitar to get away with it. I have pics somewhere in the attic. There was a great documentary on BBC4 and he showed his guitar collection..He had one of Django's guitars!!! plus all his old recording gear. The man is(was-past tense) a legend in that he helped pioneer multi track. Get a listen to his version of 'How High The Moon' with Mary there are no drums or bass but it grooves along at an incredible pace and feel. RIP Les...I guess you can argue with Leo now to see who has the best guitars!!! |

This is where my handle comes from. I played a Les Paul for many years, and was a Paul Man in style and tone. Before I found Further of course ;) I always wanted to see him in person, Bill gets so many great opportunities, and I love that story about getting to see Les play and perform. Lets all get Paulverized! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foXSXOAfB4U Les paved the way for generations of loud guitars, rest ye well Les! |

With all my travels, I never managed to be in NYC on a Monday night. One of the things I will always regret. RIP Les, you were one of the greats! Edwin |
