I found this guy David Dyson whilst looking for some of Robert Gorden's playing.
I've never heard of him before but he has a great funky style and a great sound from his bass. No idea what the bass it is tho but I can hear some stanley, Marcus, Victor and Mark King under his fingers.

I'm not too proud to admit that I have not listened to much of Louis Johnson's stuff.

I'm not too proud to admit that I'm not very familiar with a lot of Louis Johnson's stuff.

For a while he played "second" bass behind Me'shell Ndegeocello... a very, very fine player.

You may want to check out Billy Dickens, from Chicago, arguably amongst the finest players ever:

And he's not just about slapping. I was present at a clinic where Bill Dickens and Larry Coryell were presenting together, and they played "Giant Steps". Afterwards, Larry told the gathering that Bill's solo on "Giant Steps" was the best he had ever heard anyone play, on any instrument.

Another Chicago Bass Player: Richie Patterson.

With Miles, and with one of my favorite drummers, Ricky Wellman.

It would have been better without all that slapping/popping.
