Great show! I have to admit I have approached every post-Jerry incarnation with trepidation. This one is definitely in the running for the best yet, though I think Bill & Mickey would improve things - not that Jay Lane and Joe Russo are chopped liver - Bill & Mickey just know the material and each other that much better. Phil wasn't turned up enough in the mix, at least from my position at the center of the balcony, during the first set. In the second set the sound man finally found Phil's volume slider and Phil could be heard much more up front in the mix. God, I LOVE his playing! Again, I've said this before, I miss the articulation and presence of his Alembic days, but the Ritter ain't bad. Did he get it at the Guitar Center on Alpha Centuri? Now we come to John Kadlecik, the "Jerry-clone" from Dark Star Orchestra. His playing was wonderful. He had the "Jerry" tones down, but wasn't a carbon copy. His playing felt "real", not contrived. However, when he started to sing, it sounded like Frank Caliendo had added Jerry to his outstanding John Madden, William Shatner, and George W. impressions. Often John K. sounded exactly like Jerry - phrasing, tone, straining, the whole enchilada. To me it was downright creepy at times. I suspect the boys hear this too and aren't quite sure how to deal with it. On numerous "Jerry" songs, Bobby would alternate lines with John K. Sort of like, "O.K. kid, we'll let you sing some of the Garcia material, but we're not ready to take the leash off just yet". Phil did a rare and unusual version of "Unbroken Chain" that was cool. I'd strongly recommend seeing this incarnation if it comes to your town. I just wish John K. would sing in his own voice (if he has one). Joe Bob says "two big thumbs up". Bill, tgo |

Thanks Bill! I guess doing this stuff night in and night out for the last twelve years, he might not have another "voice". |
