I read this interview the other day... I can't think of a better way to honor Frank than what his son is doing...

Trying to decide on a favorite Zappa album is like trying to choose your favorite Pie, there is no such thing as bad pie.

Frank Zappa and John Lennon are the ONLY celebrity deaths I have ever mourned. I was a mess for weeks when I heard the news.

I remember Summers in San Francisco, a cool Cat name: Ray White, (one the most serious member of Zappa's fantastic band -- played rhythm guitar, and Ray was very well known for his commanding singing voices of the band). Ray, would appear many times over my drummer's house with axe-in-hand, and jam with us.

I was only a 18 years old kid, with this baddass Alembic S1 that was very commanding even with Ray.

In those days, the song: "You are what you is" was scoring huge with audiences world-wide; and then the song: "Valley Girl" took them to the moon. Those were some wild times for Ray in deed.

Anyway, since we all lived close by each other, Ray would always come over unannounced, and the three of us would play for hours and rap about his big adventures with Frank Zappa and everything else with music.

Ray's visits, was and will always be a memorable experience, and deep down, I believe he came over to to get away from the lime lights of fame and money, and cars, homes and crap to humble down with people, who didn't see him as a member of a famous band nor cared about the junk. With Ray, we all were able to take off the mask, and "draw-down" our defenses. Of course with me as this skinny college kid playing this baddass Alembic, and a drummer who worked for a major electric utility company, didn't have nearly the problems of Ray.

However, whenever we got together, we were able to find peace, and an oasis from the world.

Those were some beautiful days in San Francisco, once upon a time...

Unfortunately, everything came to a stream screeching halt, after I received a call from my drummers Mother, my best friend (her only son) past away to join our Creator.

It was a life changing situation for me musically and I abandoned my bass and later sold everything shortly afterward. The 80's was an interesting period in deed.

spose, I too know Ike. I was lucky enough to tour Europe with him in early '94. We had 3 months on the road and 2 weeks in the studio with him. Happy times... just a few years earlier I had been along to see the 'best band' tour of '88. I was a big Zappa fan as a kid (and still am now) so it was absolutely magical for me to go from listening to Ike, to playing with him in a few short years. I also did a commemorative project in Belgium premiering some new works in a tribute to Frank, it was a full concert orchestra and 9 piece rock band, on keys/vocals was one Robert Martin also of the Zappa alumni.
I was one lucky guy...
If you see Ike say hello from Jake in the UK
