This posting is partially in response to this thread, but it's mainly just a real good story for anybody that plays music. Segovia was scheduled to give a recital in New York, as was customary in those days, Maestro Segovia was staying with another CG aficionado (a teacher) and was to have dinner prior to his performance. As dinner was being prepared, the Maestro withdrew into the teaching room to practice and warm up. As the sounds of Segovia's playing came up, the host said, "Oh I can hear from the piano-like tones that the Maestro is using his Ramirez this trip." "On the contrary", one of the other classical guitarists replied, "it is clear from the full, rounded trebles that the Maestro is using his Fleta." Debate went on for a while as to whether Mr. Segovia was using his Ramirez, his Hauser, or his Fleta. After a while the music stopped and Mr. Segovia appeared to inquire when dinner would be served, HOLDING THE STUDENT GUITAR that had been hanging at hand in the teaching room. Music is in your hands, heart, and head. In posting this I am not in any way disrespecting the marvelous works of art that Alembic produces - I delight in either of mine any time I have a chance to play. But - the implication that other players are somehow "less than" because they're not holding an Alembic is disappointing. The best instrument in the world is the one held by someone earnestly offering up his/her talents to the muses, regardless of make. Peace to you all, Tom (the contrarian) | ||

Clapton on an Alembic would sound better than me on a Squire. Clapton on a Squire would sound better than me on my Alembic. Clapton on an Alembic would sound better than Clapton on a Squire. It's the player AND the instrument. Bill, tgo | ||

my .02: I agree with Tom - it certainly comes from within, the passion can be heard on a $20.00 guitar as well as a $2,000.00 guitar. Sometimes playing a different instrument (regardless of quality or price) inspires one to go to areas never before explored - thus causing an eruption of expression/ passion that is pure magic in the moment . . . . Sometimes a finer crafted instrument makes it easier to allow the inner expression of passion to flow with an articulation unsurpassed . . . . | ||

MY friend Paul Rigby (plays with Neko Case) is one of those guys who makes crappy guitars sound great; when I worked with him in a guitar shop he made horrible cigar boxes sound good...made me realize it does rest ultimately in the hands, but thankfully most of us have gear to help...Tony | ||
