Taggart: What do you want me to do, sir? Hedley Lamarr: I want you to round up every vicious criminal and gun slinger in the west. Take this down. [Taggart looks for a pen and paper while Hedley talks] Hedley Lamarr: I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers, and Methodists! Hard to think that this movie came out 36 years ago. It is a classic. Blazing Saddles is a 1974 satirical Western comedy film directed by Mel Brooks. Starring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, it was written by Brooks, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, Norman Steinberg, and Al Uger, and was based on Bergman's story and draft. The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards, and is considered one of the great American comedies, coming in at number six on AFI's 100 Years. |

I'm sure everyone has their own interpretation, but to me the movie always seemed to be pointing out how ignorant racism is. The quote about the towns-folk not accepting the new sheriff because he's black, for instance: "What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? "Marry my daughter"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons." I don't think that the movie was ever intended in a hateful spirit to black folks, and in fact, quite the opposite. |

I read a few years ago in an interview with Mel Brooks, that he wrote all of the Cleavon Little lines and Richard Prior wrote all the White people jokes. You can see, in the credits, that Rich was co-writer of this project, and was going to play the main role, till contract negotioations fell apart. Also, Gene Wilder was a last minute substitute. "I've been with thousands of men, again and again, they promise the moon. They keep on coming and going and going and cumming, and always too soon." Madelene Kahn |

Hey Moderator Dave, I want to go on record as being against the "n" word showing up on the Alembic site and would respectfully ask that you delete the post. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't leave the word "c@#t" up if someone had posted that-- whether or not quoting someone or for humorous effect... And the "n" word is much, much, much more offensive than that term. What would the effect be should somebody google the "n" word and Alembic's name were to show up? musashi |
