the miscellaneous thread was created by alembic for us to talk amongst ourselves dave- i cant believe that you would actually think this thread doesnt belong- its not politically motivated- its pointing out the hypocrisy- and lack of compassion by a company while i respect your attempts to keep inflamatory threads out of the site- i think you stepped over the line a little bit, if i had posted threads about dems and reps. sarah palin- etc i could understand that being said= maybe we should change the title of this section to "acceptable miscellaneous" according to dave houck its time you stepped up and set the boundaries YOU dont want to see- the heck with the rest of us, :-) | ||

Flax: Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Dave's caution was as much in response to your original posting as it was to a subsequent detour about the alleged evils of capitalism. Please refrain from continuing this thread in that vein." He then allowed the thread to continue and, after his subtle shove back onto the tracks, it proceeded without any problem. Hi Jeff; Regarding your suggestion to "set the boundaries", Susan, Mica and I have been working on some significant changes, and we hope to have something posted within a few days. However, although we've put a lot of time and discussion into the changes we'll be posting, I doubt these changes will address the specific setting of boundaries that you are requesting. We'll have to give that some more thought when we can. At the moment, I need to get back to work and really don't have the time to address this as fully as I would like. But I'll bring it up with Mica, and we'll see what we can come up with. Please make suggestions or raise questions that you think we should consider. Regarding that one thread in particular, several members were made uncomfortable by the thread. Despite the film's importance as a teaching tool for exposing bigotry, certain quotes taken out of that context will not be perceived by all readers in the same way. I removed the most objectionable word in the thread (which was in a post made by someone that does not live in the US and thus does not have the same context that people like me who live in the southern US have), and concluding that the thread was continuing to make people uncomfortable, decided to close it. My next door neighbor flies the stars and bars in his front yard. Personally, I find that extremely objectionable. I suppose I could just not look in that direction; but the bigger issue is what it says about the street I live on, the community I live in; what it says to friends who might come to visit. When we are part of a community, I think it important to consider the community as a whole, consider the feelings of all of the members of that community, consider the things that have shaped their lives. Our community here on the Alembic forum is global in nature, and members are very diverse. We therefore have a greater responsibility to view what we post here within the context of this diverse membership. It's not always easy to do, and it's not always clear how things will be interpreted. You are absolutely right that my moderating reflects my subjective view of what might be best for the club as a whole; and I would go even further and suggest that this subjective view changes over time, and even day to day. My mood changes over time, my patience, my level of engagement, my health, my available time for the board, etc. Your point is a reasonable point to make. I don't always, or even frequently, know what the best action to take is going to be. This moderatin' stuff does tend to hurt my head. | ||

I'm sorry, Dave - my wife says I'm an ass for saying things like this, but it's a compulsion (the historian in me, don't you know?), so... I'm betting your neighbor doesn't fly the Stars and Bars (the 1st CSA national flag, 1861-1863 - horizontal thirds red/white/red with a blue field holding a circle of stars, which grew from 7 to 9, 11 & 13 over the course of 1861), but rather the much more commonly known battle flag of the Army of Tennessee (red with a diagonal blue cross bordered in white, with 13 stars on the cross, the dimensions of the flag having a 3:5 ratio - the Army of Northern Virginia's flag was the same design, but square). The S&B was the official flag of the government, but A of T flag is the one most people think of as "the Confederate flag". In case you're wondering (and I'm sure you are  ), the Stars & Bars was replaced because it looked too much like the Stars & Stripes; the 2nd CSA national flag was white with the A of NV flag as a field; it was decided that it looked too much like a flag of truce, and was quickly replaced by the third, which added a wide red vertical stripe at the outer edge. There, I've let that out, now I feel better. And while my need for correct detail demanded that I point out the difference, they do all mean the same thing. I tend to agree with you Craig. However, the folks at Alembic have politely asked numerous times to avoid some subjects, and I can respect that also. When you run the show, you get to make the rules, so to speak. It is hard to know what will offend sometimes, but blatant profanity and racial slurs are likely candidates, in any context. | ||

I just pulled up the list, Kevin; it's been quite a while since I saw it, and it seems a lot of movies have been counted since I last perused it - BL (with 260 Fs) is now #14. Pulp Fiction (265) & Reservoir Dogs 269) are 13 & 12. The current leader is an eponymous documentary on the word, whose 824 uses & 8.86 uses per minute both pretty much quadruple Lebowski's not-inconsiderable totals. It was a tough challenge - but by God, they went out and achieved anyway- without the use of their limbs, which some Chinaman took from them in Korea! About 15 years ago, when I was living still in Italy, I acted in a theatrical play which was based on this movie. I was the austrian police commander with the mechanical arm. I made those movement so well that people cracked up especially when it got stuck hahaha | ||

Young Frankenstein is definitely one of my favorites. I haven't seen it in a while and need to pull it out of the archive. I just want to add something about the censorship comments. I think we all have tendency to forget this is not a private board but is being provided by a business. This means, rightly or wrongly, that this board is a reflection of the company. Given this business orientation I think it is perfectly acceptable to have limits placed on the subject matter that can be discussed here. Keith | ||
