Hey Craig, I'll be there. I was bummed to hear that Vinnie will not be playing with Beck anymore, but maybe he will get drafted to play with Dweezil. Wouldn't that be awesome. Come say hello, Orch left, row N, seat 501. Peace, James |

Jeff Beck was great as usual. He had a 25 piece orchestra behind him, and alternated between his soft material, and hard stuff. With the orchestra he did Over The Rainbow, Day In The Life, People Get Ready, and some songs off his new album. He did a great Rollin and Tumblin, and Sly Stone's Take you Higher, plus all his other big hits. Great show. At the end of the show he broke out his old Les Paul, and did a tribute to Les Paul with some pre-recorded vocals of Les and Mary singing.. Great show. He played 2 different Strats, a Tele, and his Les Paul. Great show. Did I mention that Zappa Plays Zappa opened the show? We hit Tommy's after the show. I got a double chili burger, and a chili dog. :lol2: I'll try find the set lists Zappa opened with Apostrophe, Stinkfoot, Purple Lagoon, Nanuck, Montana, Peaches En Regalia, Willie the Pimp. I don't remember the rest of the songs I was too busy enjoying the show to make any notes. Dweezil was shreading it up, sounded great. He played a Les Paul, an SG, and a sunbust Strat, that had Franks face super imposed on it. Their band is tight. Check them out if you get a chance.... |

This was my first time seeing Dweezil, and Mr. Beck. Dweezil started out on a Les Paul, and while his playing was great, he didn't sound right to me, until he put on the SG, about 4 songs into the set. That felt more like the Frank tone I remember. As a musical experience, Zappa plays Zappa was outstanding, tight and entertaining. As a tribute band, there were two things lacking for me, Frank, and Frank. Having someone else sing Frank's lyrics was just wrong for me. His lyrics and vocal stylings were so much an extension of his extraordinary personality, that it was hard for me to accept a substitute. And then there's the guitar playing. For me Dweezil is too clean. Frank's playing often had a flailing, messy quality, that made it so exciting for me. Dweezil, undoubtably talented, and a pleasure to watch and hear, played with too much precision, to really capture his dad's vibe. All in all a great set by Zappa, and I would love to see him again. Jeff Beck. Shredding? certainly. But also lyrical, thoughtful, beautiful, and interesting. Rhonda Smith? OMG, Narada Michael Walden? Holy Sh*t! Keyboard player? Who? After his Les Paul tribute, he ended with a bit from Madame Butterfly, astoundingly cool. Jeff Beck deserves all the adulation he gets. This was also my first time in the Nokia Theater. I thought the sound was pretty decent, not excessively loud or thumpy. I wouldn't hesitate to see another show there. I love L.A. JBY (Message edited by davehouck on April 18, 2010) |

by Dweezil Apr 18, 2010 02:01 PM Hello Everyone, Well, we had a lot of fun last night. I must say it was a bit surreal for me. Opening up for Jeff Beck was a pleasure. My dad and Jeff were friends and had mutual admiration for each other's playing. I have long been an admirer of Jeff's playing as well. He's a true master of the of the instrument. It was great to see him up close once again. Another element of the evening that amused me was the fact that Edward Van Halen came to the show. It was quite the reverse... I usually go to his shows. We laughed about the fact that the last time he came to a show of mine it was for my school talent show when I was 12. For me it adds a funny twist to everything. It meant a lot to me that he came to the show. It was a challenge to choose the right songs for the show since we only had 50 minutes to play and a few rehearsals to prepare. The audience was very receptive and we received some standing ovations. I'm happy that we had this opportunity, Thanks Jeff! Up next for us - The release of "Return Of The Son Of"... double live CD coinciding with the tour starting in June. Also DWEEZILLA in June. There are still a few spaces, come and join us! We are holding our auditions for an additional keyboardist on Tuesday. I'll keep you posted on that. See you on tour soon! DZ |
