Guys - I will admit that Fenders are not my specialty, however I came across these two links and find there to be something fishy...

link

link

I noticed the strings on both headstock (front)pictures are the exact same. Looks like he added a "retro" thumbrest and is selling it for an obscene price. Also the part about the serial number in "Bob's" post made me blink.

Please tell me I am wrong here. I cannot stand people trying to take advantage of others when it comes to music. And I can assure Bob Geddy will not be purchasing. :-)

Nope, you're not wrong. Same bass. Upon closely looking at the back of the neck in both listings, you can see the same marks in both. Hopefully any prospective buyer will perform their due diligence. But indeed, Mr. Bob is certainly full of himself.

I usually make a point to never mess with people who refer to themselves in 3rd person. Lol

I dunno - the pickguards look different (though that could be the lighting); Bob's has the strap button on the back of the headstock whereas the gbase one doesn't; the strings aren't the same, the gbase head shot shows green silk on the G, which Bob's lacks. Either way, Bob doesn't know much about "his" axe if the lack of a skunk stripe makes him wonders where the trussrod is on capped neck. While neither ad is tempting to me, I do like the gbase price a little better.

As far as I know, the black block fingerboard Jazz Basses were only made for a few years in the 70's (71 to 74, but I could be wrong). If the Gbase guy is listing it as a 67, something isn't right.

Yeah Alan, I was scratching my head thinking the same thing, but the decals aren't your typical '70s fare either.... hmmm...

I had a close look at the pictures of both listings on a high res monitor and
I would bet my left testicle
that they are indeed the same bass.
It is all so coincidental that the dings and grain markings on
two necks would be exactly the same as they are
I reckon it is some frankenstein bass this guy made up and is looking for a sucker.
I would keep well away from this.

If they're not the same, it disproves the ebay claim of "one-of-a-kind" maple fingerboard. But hey, a CBS era Fender that has been refinished for only $33K? Such a deal! lol

He was definately hostile about the similarity of the two basses/listings, when questioned about it on an ebay message.

He stated, and I quote "I am not trying to sell the bass to you, because I am sure that you have never ever seen $32,995, I am trying to sell it to someone who knows what it is and how rare it is. Find me another maple capped neck Jazz bass from the 1960's, find one and I will buy it for $32K otherwise please...shut the Hell up!!! Chicago Bob.
"

I sent him the link to the Gbase listing........
needless to say he did not keep to his word such as; "find one and I will buy it for $32K"

I, on the other hand will "shut the Hell up!!!"

Sometimes restraint is hard to maintain when reading ads like this. The seller certainly seems to have hostility issues.

I asked him at his ebay ad why he seemed so hostile toward Colorado (and if he knew Beatle Bob, who is quite a character!). Here's his answer:

because they ask a lot of stupid questions and they don't buy jack... That says it all, but if you are from Colorado and you bid on my bass Colorado I will ship the bass to you, Nope, don't know Beatle Bob. As B/4, Chicago Bob.

I guess he knew I wasn't going to drop $32k on his bass!

Nice looking bass, but I can't see that finish issue on the back being cause by a belt buckle. I'd pay $500.

I saw that also.

It is just $28,000 beyond what it is worth.

Maybe this thread would be best in the "Dreaming for now" topic heading ;)
