I am thinking of getting the above because I have joined a band which is a tad louder than what I am playing. Any comments to assist prior to purchase??? It is a 300W combo with 2x10 + tweeter. | ||

Remember that loudness relates to Sound Pressure Levels (dB spl) and Amp's Power rating is just barely related to it. If you need to "more volume" in your rig you must check your Cabinet's Sensitivity. It relates dB with Wattage and Distance to the Speakers (in Brazil we use Meters) - dB@W/m. If you simply get one better rated sensitivity Cab you'll get all the loudness you're looking for. Remember that you must get at least one Cab 6dB higher than your current one. Think like 6dB meaning "double louder". This isn't looks much, but is the difference between barely hearing and definitively perceiving your Bass. IMO, it seems easier to get louder like that than buying a more powerfull Amp Head. To get that same extra 6dB you would have to get something like 4 times more power on the Amp. That means if you find 200W Power Amp too little to your needs, you would have to get a 800W Amp to get that same 6dB improvement! And if you need more loudness than that, you would need something greater than 1600W! That's a lot of Power, don't you think? But you can always buy a new Cab. Many Combos have "shy" Sensitivity ratings (isn't unusual seeing Combo Amps showing values below 90dB@W/m). If you buy some of this new Neodimium Cabs from Epifani, GK or Eden - almost all companies offers some model like that - you'll be able to easily improve your loudness on 10~12dB with the very same Amp... And they're smaller, too. Check this out. | ||

Above List points that if you have one 90dB/W/m Cab and a 100W Amp, it will produce 110dB at your ears if you're 1 meter far from them (90dB plus 20dB). * But remember that you'll be probably more distant than that and playing music isn't much like sending a constant signal to a Speaker like you do in a measurement. Well, now lets say this isn't enough for your Gig's needs. Now you'll have to get more than 6dB loudness improve. If you keep Cab's Sensitivity Rate, you'll need a 400W Amp Head. But if you keep that very same Amp (100W) you could get even more loudness simply buying a 100dB/W/m Cab... Okay thanks for the info but I don't need to be that loud, the Roland BassCube I use for the jazz gigs is loud enough, especially in restaurants, casinos etc. The other band I am joining have gigs in pubs and small bars. I did all loud gear when I was in a club band, my back nearly split in two parts carrying 1 x 15, 4 x 10 and a heavy amp. No more thank you, will let the PA do the work. Dave Just what I require, it is very retro with large radio type controls, bass, mid & treble but with two extra mid attenuator controls. It has a funky VU meter on the front which illuminates. Preset bass & treble buttons, and compressor. What I really like is that you can switch the tone section in and out of the amp. I haven't gigged it yet but it is loud enough for what I will be doing. It certainly makes the MK sing. The other reason why I bought it is because our VAT(purchase tax in the USA) will be going up from 17.5% to 20% with our new government so I didn't want to get stung! | ||
