Go vuvuzelas! I mean go, get out of here!!!!! Been watching some very good football. They've been talking about the ball, but most of the odd bounces I've seen can be related to wet weather and altitude. Germany definitely played well, but the red card to Cahill was questionable and, I believe, factored into the final score. | ||

I agree with you on all fronts Bob. While I was watching the game my wife ran upstairs thinking we were being attacked by a swarm of bees! The send off was dubious and a couple of offside non calls but that is the nature of the game. Missing the hand ball is inexcusable though. slawie (grumpy old Australian sore loser) | ||

It's soccer. Let me sum it up .. "he's got he ball .... he's kicked it to someone else .... and he's kicked it to someone else ... and ... he takes a shot at the goal .. and.... no score .. the other team gets the ball ... they kick it around ... take a shot at the goal ... and no score...." Repeat for about 90 minutes and you have a soccer game. Oh, BTW, they call a 4-0 game a "rout." Sorry, folks, but when the U.S. and Britain end a game tied, I don't call that exciting. I call it average. I know that it is a taxing game to play having played it myself, but it's just ... boring. But that's just me. To each his/her own, as they say. Alan | ||

I'm with Alan on this one. Football has never sparked my interest and unfortunately we're now being bombarded with it from all directions. This is also one of the few times that being an Englishman living in Scotland has it's downside. Here in the central region, a minority of Scots will support everyone that plays against England and will go out of their way to propagate their 400 year old grudges. It just never caught on in the states in all these years. Many young girls and boys play it, schools have teams and new immigrants and their descendants love the game. Not sure what it is but the paying public haven"t gone for it. But the rest of the world seems very interested. Hooters opens for the 7:30 am games. Breakfast of champions! | ||

I have to say that I am getting very tired of the flopping. The least little contact and guys fall like they've been shot and hold onto a knee or ankle. It sucks when they do it for a free kick, and even more so when they try to draw a yellow against their opponent. For such a worldwide game that draws nations together, it really seems to lack honor. -bob | ||

For us football fans, it will definetely be an interesting world cup. Though I have to say, I am a little bit disappointed about the low number of goals in most games. I was surprised though on how well North Korea, NZ, and Switzerland did so far. Those underdog teams really stepped it up. | ||

Agreed on the flopping to get fouls. Unfortunately, it's become a part of the game. I totally understand the lack of interest from people who didn't grow up with the sport. It's much like cricket, baseball and other sports with wait time or low scores, in that it's easy to be bored by it when you don't fully understand the game. If you truly understand a sport, it's easy to be excited by a 1-0 final score. Take baseball for example- watching pitch selection, the shifts of the defense, all make it interesting (assuming you know what to watch for). In my opinion, the World Cup is definitely in the same category- it's very entertaining if you understand the strategy, skill and nuances of the game, but incredibly boring if all you see is a bunch of guys kicking a ball around. | ||

The one thing the World Cup educated me on i the Vuvuzela. I'd never heard of it before but now, I can't get the sound outta my head! If you have a Droid or Android phone there are several Vuvuzela apps out there. Toby - I have no questions, thanks! It's probably the same with all team sports. Once in a blue moon you get to see a great game. So mostly it tends to be a complete waste of time, and you still watch the game just in case some player pulls off a brilliant move. | ||
