so the drummer in my band has been playing for about 40 years and has acquired some very nice stuff over the years(including a HUGE PA system). at practice I play through a Sunn Conert Bass head and what i believe to be an 18 inch PA speaker. i love the sound that i get when playing A LOT. so i'm considering asking him if i could buy it(maybe even the 18) from him since he is in need of some money. the only problem is that the distortion knob doesn't work so i'd have to open it up and look around to see what the problem is. so i'm asking if this would be a good buy and since the distortion doesn't work i'd be able to get for even less. just wondering if anyone else has had any experiences with this head that they want to share(good and bad). thanks

here's a completed auction for one, seems like $250 might be a good offer to start with for a concert head that is mostly functional.

is that the coliseum lead head that he's using ,Flip?

after some research i discovered that you have to have a footswitch to activate the distortion, so it may work but i just can't activate it because no footswitch

Taylor,
It's a Sunn 'beta bass' head.

Taylor,
It's a Sunn 'beta bass' head.
I bet a standard footswitch would work for the distortion on the concert head, good call on that.

I wouldn't go with an 18. An 18 inch speaker has to travel much farther than a 10 or a twelve. This will make it difficult to hear yourself on stage. Remember, bass waves take much longer to develop. If you can limit the speaker travel you will be hear yourself better and at a shorter distance. Ten or twelve inch speakers give you the benefit of being able to hear yourself and cut through the mix. If you want more bottom end, try 10's and a 15.

well i currently have an Ampeg SVT-1540HE which has 4x10's and 1x15, so i probably won't be getting the pa peaker i play through at practice, i'm still on the border about getting this head because i have a Hartke 3500 that was my first head that's my current backup for my GK RB-1001ii. if i do get the Sunn i'll probably end up selling the Hartke which is still an amazing head
