Some time back there was some discussion about the Bartolini EZQ, so I thought I would post this here:

Here's another example of the Bartolini EZQ in action. The bass is a mid-80's Pedulla Buzz fretless bass.

Here's a different track (same song, earlier version) again featuring the Bartolini EZQ. The bass is a fretless Pedulla Buzz.

I happen to have one in my 1980 Ibanez Roadster. I pulled the guts out and put the EZQ in with Nordstrand P&J pickups. Very unique tone!! Different than the Alembic stuff but it does offer a wide variety of sound. Btw, Mark is a very good player and I wish some more people knew how talented he was.

Hey Danny,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm curious, is your EZQ noisy? There's a "squick" sound in the EZQ in the Pedulla fretless, which makes itself known if you adjust the filter during a song (or worse, while recording) say when going from a slap setting to a more legato setting. Is your Ibanez a fretless?

I get more of a mini wah wah sweepy effect on my fretless Buzz, converted to Bartolini EZ-Q electronics, as well as my MVP. I am trying to imagine what a "Squick" noise actually sounds like.

Well, you get the mini wah wah sweepy effect on any Alembic with a filter, I don't think that's the "squick" sound. Sounds more like Mark may have a problem with one of the electronic components of the EZ-Q.

Musashi, My EZQ is very noisy!! I wish there was a way to quiet the noise. I think it's the nature of that preamp. My bass is fretted but can get some sounds pretty close to a fretless.

I'll see if I can dig up an example of the "Squick" sound...

Musashi, I can hear it!! I think I have the same problem when I adjust the filter. I have a ton of just hum in mine. I even took it to a tech to have it installed and still have it. I think the preamp is really sensitive and this may be the reason it's not used as much as before. Bartolini still makes this unit but I would love to see what 2 EZQ's would do in a bass. It would be like a Series 2 or somewhat comparable.

Danny, I never had hum, but there is hiss as soon as you open the filter... and super low output, compared to other basses I've owned.

I think it was Jennifer Condos who had the Pedulla with the two EZQ's in it when she was with Don Henley. That axe sold on ebay several years ago, no idea who bought it...

That's what makes Alembic what it is. No hum or hiss. Just pure tone! I think I want another Alembic now.
