I just got back from a business trip out west, and made time to see Shakedown St. on my last night in Denver.

My Canadian friend Kevin (who never heard the Grateful Dead before ?!?) came with. Edwin -it was an absolute pleasure meeting you. Kevin and I greatly appreciated your hospitality. Sadly we left early due to a 5:00 am wake call for me to catch a plane . . . . but we saw enough to convince Kevin to go home and buy some tie-dyed clothing!

It took the sound man a short few minutes into the first song to get everything balanced - and I will say that Edwin could have been an Alembic poster child! His Series I (w/flats) sounded fabulous, his playing was fabulous and everyone in the place was groovin' on the tasty licks being laid down. Kevin had commented that he could really hear the bass and how intricate it was to the sound of the whole group, then he said "Edwin is one sweet bass player". I just laughed,,,, truth be told Edwin you ruled the stage, the whole group was great and obviously a well oiled machine, but you were controlling it all (being a bassist we know who is driving the band) .

Wish we could have stayed all night. Kevin couldn't stop raving about how much he enjoyed the show.( As did I)

Edwin - thanks again for being so generous and for having such a great sounding bass and rig - it made for a great last night in town with great live music!

That sounds like a good time. If I were closer I would love to go hear Edwin play this gig as well.

Hey Edwin, I didn't know you were playing with these guys. Ive been a friend of the Galloway family for about 16 years back when Ted was playing geetar and Rick was on bass with his epic5. Ted's kid Brian and i go way back. Have to come see you guys sometime. Were you at the little bear the other week? Still hope to see your Starfire Peace... Bear

Thanks for the kind words, Paul! It was a fun evening!

Playing with Shakedown St. is kind of a perfect gig for me at this point. After being on the road with Great American Taxi and others for decades, for those that don't know, I started law school last year. When Jake, the drummer, found out I was not traveling, he called me and got me on board. Consequently, I get to have a lot of fun, but given my hectic schedule, I don't have to spend a lot of time (actually any time) rehearsing. If the gigs are too far or too many, I can sub them out. I miss being on the road, but it's great to be able to keep my hand in the game.

I was at the Little Bear the other week. I'll also be at the Oriental next Saturday. We're going to cover 3/30/1990, so I'm toying with playing a Modulus Q6, but the Series I just sounds so good and is so much fun to play that I'll probably just continue with that. OTOH, the Starfire is also much missed....

If anyone does make it into Colorado, please do get in touch, I love meeting you all!

Edwin:

The NORML National Conference, (and hence I), will be in Denver this year, April 21-23. Do you have anything scheduled around then? How's law school going? I don't think I would have ever made it through without playing music. It kept me relatively sane! lol

Ah, 3-30-1990. I was but 16 at the time, but was fortunate enough to see 2 of the Albany shows and just this one at Nassau. 22 years ago, unbelievable. I remember where we sat, people I talked to during break; such a unbelievable time for me. I feel blessed to have had the experience of catching some of this tour.

Edwin,

Were you playing through your fEarful rig? I think the fEarful cabs are one of the best possible rigs to match up with an Alembic.

Yup. I agree. The fEarful is the best cabinet I've used. I'm getting ready to build another, a 12/6/1, to go with the 15/6/1.

My sweetie and I had the great pleasure of seeing Shakedown Street on Friday evening (THANK YOU, EDWIN!). If you like Dead music, see these guys - they have it WIRED! It was all good, but Crazy Fingers was a special favorite.
Edwin's short-scale Alembic sounded great! Big Bottom, indeed.
