Well, my immediate family is just myself and my wife. Aside from gigs and location recording engineering, I'm now half-way through law school, studying environmental law, election law, evidence and working in the Criminal Defense Clinic. I'm also assisting a professor who is doing research into the death penalty, trying to find out why so many are sentenced and so few sentences are actually carried out. My wife is an artist and perfume designer (www.artscent.com) and was declared perfumer of the year for 2010 by several international blogs, has done projects with the Denver Art Museum, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and is getting ready to further her business in Japan and look into projects in Italy. She's also working on opening a perfume museum here in Boulder, but all of her projects (http://dshnotebook.wordpress.com/) leave her with little time, so that's crawling along. Maybe next summer. Moving a little further afield, my mom, a sculptor (www.penelopejencks.com) is working on a trio of musically related sculptures commissioned by John Williams. They are going to be busts of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and Serge Koussivitsky to be displayed at Tanglewood. Copland is scheduled for unveiling in June with the others to follow. Her brother, Charles Jencks, architect and postmodernist, has been working on a large landscape architecture project in Scotland: http://www.scottishresources.com/Projects/FifeEarth/default.aspx My dad is working on his etchings and gearing up for some shows next year after having a few last year. Sadly no website yet, despite our best urging. My brother is also an artist (www.adamhurwitz.com) who has suddenly manifested his long latent talent as a keyboard player is playing gigs with Empire Wasted in the New York City area after quite a while gigging as a DJ. Oh yeah, I turned 50 today and it's the 20th anniversary of when I proposed to Dawn (and the anniversary of 20 years minus 2 seconds of when she said yes!). One thing I've learned from my family: Artists never retire! | ||

My father left December 26th with two friends to join a group of motorcyclists that are crossing the world. He is doing the stretch across South America. He left Brazil, met the group in Argentina and is going up all the way to Venezuela. One of his friends is writing a Blog, if any of you guys want to see some pictures...! Some of the stuff is writen in English, the other in Portuguese. If you have any questions regarding translation, let me know (My father is Tadeusz, in case any of you might wonder)! They usually ride between 400km to 1000km a day, depending on how torturous the "roads" are on the day's route. He should be back somewhere in March now, and he will join the group again when they do the stretch across Asia. Pretty awesome, I say! Here is a picture of him, somewhere:  Greg | ||

Isn't this a movie? :-) What a great adventure! Snow! Mudslides! Volcanos! Leaky transmissions! Strip mines! Beautiful women! Large bags of interesting leafy stuff! Some great photos there. I'd love to do something like that. I had this great conversation with a friend of my grandfather who told me this story of about driving a Model T across the US and into Mexico in the late teens when he was barely out of his teens. Valentine's Day was also my engagement anniversary. I proposed 10 years ago. Our boy will turn 16 on Saturday (I met his mom when he had just turned 4). Wow, are Teenagers something else! Pants hanging down his ass, buzz cut, and the ever present earbuds blasting out rap. We have a continuous dialog - he says I only listen to ancient music and that rap is current music. I claim that rap is an art form - rhythmic poetry, but that a guy talking in rhythm with a drum machine isn't music. I know I sound like my father, but I really believe in fifty years people will still be listening to the Beatles, but no one will remember Eminem. Edwin: Congrats and keep plugging away at law school. And remember: The first year they scare you to death. The second year they work you to death. The third year they bore you to death. Enjoy! Yea but a parent's greatest revenge is becoming a grandparent. First we are smart. Then our kids think we are stupid and know nothing, until they have kids.. then we become geniusses. My son just had his Bar Mitzvah! He performed so well, temple members we did not know donated a lot of money to our temple in his honor! He is a competitive figure skater, who is on the National US team. Yes he has Olympic dreams! And he likes girls!!!!!!!! (and I like their very pretty moms). | ||

Wow - some amazing people and families here! My wife is my rock, she is my solace and strength and I love her so. My daughter and son are in Maryland the former is a nurse, making a positive difference by helping others; the later is a great bass player who appears to be more interested in girls right now. Whenever he visits he makes a beeline to my Distillate and always amazes me. My father just turned 80 and was asked this weekend by my oldest brother: "What advice can you impart to us, your children, that you have learned in 80 years of living?" - after a pregnent pause his reply was: "Never pass up the opportunity for a good nap." -I'm gonna run with that advice! :-) | ||

I alllowed myself one victory in a fight with my wife, who is an incredibly nice person. It was when my son was younger, he showed a special talent for skating and wanted to do more of it. I voted yes, my wife was not very keen on it. My bet on him has certainly paid off and he got to skate as much as he wanted to and still wants to, to this day, but I always remind him skating has to be fun first!!! Any other fights with the Mrs., I stand no chance. However, since the wives must always be right, they must make many more decisions as a result. Sometimes that makes them less happy. How can you separate those? LOL | ||

Okay, so let’s see how concise we can make this: As some of you are aware, in 2009 my wife became critically ill, and was put on a respirator for 3 weeks. The first week, the doctors basically told me that she wouldn’t make it. She proved them wrong. The process of keeping her alive had its own issues, and she was left with 22 large, seriously infected wounds that caused her extreme pain. In the winter of 2010, she was readmitted to the hospital for surgery to assist in the healing of her wounds. At one point some of her vitals dropped to the point where they again said she probably wouldn’t make it. She (again) proved them wrong. In the process of all of this, I learned how to treat stage 3 wounds, how to conduct physical therapy, and how to navigate the healthcare system (STAND YOUR GROUND!!) Her wounds are now all healed, she can walk with assistance (currently a walker, but she’s making progress with a cane) and her outlook has gotten much more positive. We celebrated her birthday at the end of last month by going to the ocean (the Marin Headlands for those in the Bay Area) and she is again enjoying getting out of the house. Through this whole process, I’ve definitely learned what is truly important, so you may have noticed that I don’t post very often, although I do still enjoy lurking quite regularly. | ||

Rough couple of years, Ken; hang in there, man. All in all, we're doing OK. Neither of my scheduled classes at the community college got the requiste 10 students registered, so I'm just subbing K-12 this semester (which is a pain in the ass - in college classes I can act like an authority, but subbing I have to act like The Authorities, which doesn't sit well - but it actually pays better than the college); the lovely & charming Mrs. Cowboy is still a Customer Service Manager, but has changed industries; #1 son & wife have moved to Kihei, HI - they're surfing a lot, & he's started a business refurbishing wood furniture; #2 & Mrs. are in Denver - he's Coordinator of Scholarship Programming at a community college, she's an architect; #3 & his squeeze are in Skagway, AK; she does daycare, he works construction, rents a shop where he pursues his dream of saving the planet through pedal power by building & selling bicycles out of salvaged parts, and plays drums, guitar, and lap steel every chance he gets (today he promised to send me some tracks from his current project.) Okay here goes... Divorced, my daughter Jessica is a graphic designer and works as an Art Director for an advertising company in Dubai, she got engaged to Scott in Bali in Dec 2010..they are both having a great time of their lives in Dubai. My son Phillip lives with me, he is studying Music technology at University and is a bass player too. Last night we had a great discussion about Jaco as he has to do a 10 min presentation on 'Choose a musician who has made an impact on the jazz world'..well it had to be Jaco didn't it. My partner Shona who has her own place is a great person and has a grandmother in Rothes, way up in Morayshire Scotland..whiskey everywhere so I cannot go wrong!! Apart form a little hypertension and frozen shoulder which disappeared 18 months I am in pretty good shape. In a great band with whom are great people to work with( that has been a long time coming!!) so everything is pretty good right now | ||

Nancy (wife) is hanging in there being a mom/spouse, helping her brother manage his small business, and helping her scattered husband launch a small business. Adam (17 year old son) will be leaving in an hour for the state DECA (HS business club) competition. He enjoys it and does well at it. Also, DECA is loaded with college scholarships, so I hear. He's taking a bunch of HS-college dual credit courses and makes good grades. Hopefully, he'll have a fair bit of college knocked out by the time he graduates from HS in 2012. He is a talented musician on several instruments but doesn't really have a passion for music right now; oh well. Scott (13 year old son) is involved in middle school sports, makes great grades, is totally into playing drums, and is very talented at metal drumming (we have all become very familiar with Metallica, Slayer, and Disturbed). He found the instrument that he is passionate about and is diving in. Rich (self) is keeping his head above water being a dad/spouse, working his day job, applying for a patent/starting a small business, and trying to find a little time to play music. It doesn't sound like all that much but it keeps our days filled. All in all we are a reasonably happy family and are doing well. Rich | ||

Well, well. I have taken a page from Edwin's book. I am back to school. I have started a masters program in Physical therapy. In one year I will have my License as a Massage therapist, and certification from Titelist to work on pro golfers. In two years I will have my degree in P.T. Summer of 2012 I will be starting the Rolfing program down the street from Edwin in Boulder. My intention is to use my CBS connects to get on the PGA Tour as a therapist before I am 45. I made this decision due to less gigs coming my way. Jacquelyn and I are a month from our 1yr anniversary, and we are considering going back to San Fran. Don't know if we will get back to the Mothership, but... She is doing well, working as a therapist for infants and pregnant mothers. And we are closing on a house next month. Whew!
