Just saw that Victor and Stanley are coming to town! Got my tickets this morning - really pumped up for the funk-n-stuff! It would be super cool if Marcus showed up and they played some SMV. Either way the evening will be a low end luxury! |

I'm going to see them at the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA on 03/23...great room for a show...can't wait. Here's a pic of me & Vic circa '91 or '92 at the old Birchmere.

My wife and I just got invited to the Boulder Theater show on the 12th. The soundman there is an old friend! I'll see about bringing my Nikon. Sorry about the low res. This is from 1997 in Telluride. |

The show last night was great! I wasn't expecting it to be quite so compelling and even Dawn liked it, who tends to really have no patience with jazz fusion. Victor's set was the more polished of the two. I could have done without the 70s and 80s covers (Michael Jackson, The Commodores, etc.). At times it seemed like they were drifting into wedding band territory (although the sickest, most ferocious wedding band you ever heard). MVP was JD Blair, for sure. Stanley threw down hard. Dawn at the beginning of the set said it looked like he raided Berklee, as his whole band seemed to be under 30. His pianist was exceptional and the drummer was also amazing. He played one of the most compelling drum solos I've heard in years. Plus, he had spent the morning in the hospital with food poisoning! Stanley had two Alembics, one that looked like cocobolo and the other spalted maple. He also played some upright: for a drum/bass duet, a solo piece and a full band rendition of Spain that featured some of the best playing of the night. The pianist in particular really tore that one up. Great dynamics throughout the tune. Of course there was the obligatory 2 bass version of School Days, with Victor quoting the hell out of Stanley. The sound was very good in the Boulder Theater (of course, getting 7th row tickets helped). They've done some PA and acoustics upgrades that have really helped this room out. It's an old school art deco theater, not designed for electric music and with the new upgrades, the bass really was huge and quick in a way I've not heard before. Stanley got a huge range of tones (Ampeg rig, Victor used a Hartke) and the low end of the short scale Series I's was just amazing (I know this sound well from the stage, and had killed my guitarist all Friday night as he had to stand right next to the subs were stacked 8 feet tall right beside stage left). It's great to hear it from out front! I thought about bringing my Series I to get Stanley to sign it and my buddy who runs the sound there said it was cool, but I decided the hell with it. If anyone should sign it, it should be me! Just kidding. Sort of. Of course, all the bass players of the Boulder/Denver area were out in force. It seemed very sold out. All in all a great night of music!

Here's another shot. I wish I had brought my DSLR, but the little Canon G12 did a pretty OK job. I have to go through and retouch them as there is more detail than shown in these versions. (Message edited by edwin on March 13, 2011) |

Saw the two bass giants last night. Like Edwin mentioned, Victor's band was more polished, he had his big brother Reggie on guitar and Joe on keys, drummer was Watson/ Watkins? Super talented bunch - Reggie was F U N K Y with his whacka whacka and raking techniques in full effect. At the Milwaukee show Stan had the same basses as Edwin mentioned - did NOT have Vic join him on stage when he closed with School Days :-( however he went toe to toe exchanging licks with all of his band members Charlie (the guitarist) was smoking on School Days, amazingly one of the keyboardists (Davey) really killed it - holding down the 'rythmn' bass part and exchanging licks with Stan at the same time, very impressive. Ronald Bruner Jr. (Stan's drummer) was off the hook all night long - he completely shattered his snare drum head by the second song! He is a power drummer for sure - smacks that snare like Gerry Brown - it was alot of fun watching him play. Stan's upright work was VERY inspiring. Brought my back plate in and got it autographed (saw a guy that brought a bass and they turned him away at the entrance). Great night - great show.

I saw the show last night. Same comments as Edwin and Paul. Like Paul said, Victor and Stan did not perform together. The venue would not allow cameras with flash, so I had to take very poor shots with my mobile phone. The show was great. Great move on the backplate Paul.
