I was wondering what you guys use to get those good ol' bass fuzz tones and what the best is in your opinion. I use the Boss ODB-3 and have been for about 3 years, I'm really happy with it but was wanting to see what everyone else uses and if anyone could do a comparison with this one that'd be awesome!

A month ago I picked up a used BBE Green Screamer. It's just "okay" - I would like a little more grit and bite. If it makes any sense I would say the BBE is a little too "smooth".

I use the 'Mean' channel of my GT Trio preamp,...LOVE IT!!...especially with the Morley Wah :-)

...lots o' gain and more than enough bass at hand, most bass overdrives I've tried are lacking in the low frequencies.

Now I'm curious....I've never used fuzz or overdive effect for bass....If I wanted to I could over drive one channell of my tube amp.......
Chours,Flange,Synth,Wah (mines a Morley too) and volume pedal...yes but fuzz no....
Am I missing....when and what type music do you use the fuzz?

I find that it actually works well with slap bass, if you listen to "My Generation" by The Who, Entwistle uses it for the bass line. Also useful for faster music like "Hysteria" by Muse. All depends on what you're into.

I use the sansamp bass DI for overdrive and a Marshall guv'nr ii for more distortion. for fuzz, the Prescription Electronics Yardbox works great and doesn't cut the lows at all...the weird thing with the yardbox is that with guitar ya gotta play around with it to find the sweet spots, but with bass it doesn't seem to care how it's set...Tony

I use it for our heavier tunes or when I know the guitarists part won't fill the upper mids
but the song needs it.
We have a couple earthy blues tunes that it works well with.

I need it for one our tunes so the harmonics I play will resonate and cut through the mix.

There were a few studio recordings in which Jack Casady uses some amazing distortion tones. Here is a link for an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVpGM2T5JRY

Cooool,
It had been a while since I heard that and I never visualized Jack working the sustain and growl while listening to it....gave me shivers : )

Great album all the way through,

Yes. I am glad you like it. If you cascade an F-2B and use a bit of compression ; Pultec EQ , Fairchild compressor ,UREI LA4A ,you can get cool sounds, other compressors would do it but back in the "day " those makes were a likely choice. Versatone amps were also a good effect.
