Would love to connect with fellow club members, or happy to take suggestions on things to do (at SXSW, so schedule is pretty full).

Bradley:

They've got a bridge in downtown Austin under which live a hell of a lot of bats. If they are in town (the bats migrate), the sight of them leaving the bridge in early evening is spectacular. There are 100,000s of bats and it takes quite a while for all of them to fly out from under the bridge. Have fun and enjoy the music.

Austin has long been known for its live music scene. Haven't been there in a long time but I'm sure it's still happening.

I wonder if there will much room left for the local music scene during the SBSW proceedings.

Hey Bradley, I just came across this post. Sorry I missed it, I was at SXSW too! My son edited a movie that had it's premier there March 15. I hope you enjoyed our Texas hospitality! Did you see the bats? They fly out at dusk from under the Congress Ave. bridge. Not sure if they were flying in March or not. They do fly daily in the summer. If anyone ever goes to see this, bring an umbrella! I learned the hard way that the 1st thing the bats do after waking from their sleep is to "drop" their meal from the night before on the crowd below! This is the largest colony of Mexican Freetail bats in North America, even more than Carlsbad Caverns.

I will admit, Austin was hopping during SXSW; I should have brought more Provigil.

Awesome! Earplugs required.

We didn't get to see any bands during SXSW. We were just there for the day to see my son's movie, then I had to work. Did you spot any Alembics there?

I didn't see any Alembics, but did see some truly nutty stuff.

Hey Rusty, congrats to you and your son.

Even though we have family just north of A, we rarely make it into the city for anything other than the Alamo Draft House, or the art museum.
Unfortunately the party district is suffering from the usual suspects. If you can tolerate commercialized weirdness, drunk college kids, pimps and thieves then stroll down 6th street where you can still find a few musical surprises (keep your wallet in your front pocket). Stepping into a tiny street-side bar, we were treated by Omar and the Howlers to some good ol', cranking rock and roll.

Thanks Mike! Yeah, Austin can be a scary place! Thank God my son survived & wasn't corrupted by the party crowd! They DO have some great music happening there though. My son is videoing my band tonight, so hopefully I'll get some stuff worthy of You Tube. It will be my 1st video with the Alembic. Any new news on a TX gathering?

Bill-

No bats. Shame on me. No sleep, endless "networking". I'll let you treat that last as euphemistically as you wish.

SXSW is definitely a madhouse; I'd like to make it next year, but maybe with a little better planning!

So you raise a kid and send 'em off to college and what do you get? Well in your case, someone to take videos of your band who actually knows what they're doing. Cool!

Saw the Carlsbad bats back in the mid-60's. I have a vague recollection that the cavern was really cool.

Thanks Dave! Yes, sending my son to UT to be a film editor was money well spent! He has made us some really cool DVD's over the years with graphics & menus just like a professional DVD! I've been to Carlsbad twice, it IS cool & never gets old!

When we went to Carlsbad, it was 113 on the surface and "a constant 56 degrees" below. The "cool" was very much appreciated! Amazing place.
