Saw the SC and VW bands last night. While I still retain my reverence for my early heroes Jaco, Jack B., Jack C., Phil, Squire, and the rest, I can now say that I have seen the two baddest players ever to pick up a bass guitar. I've been playing for nearly 40 years and those guys made me feel like I am a monkey playing a washtub bass in comparison. I looked at my Alembic when I got home and wondered to myself "why bother?" And then decided that it was time to start practicing more. To see such awesome and skullcrushing technique so totally in the service of such fun and wonderful music is a rare thing indeed. And lordy lu can those kids (all under 30) in SC's band PLAY. The Wooten bros. and their drummer were just as awe-inspiring. I got to shake hands with Vic and Joseph Wooten and both were the nicest guys you could ever hope to run across. There are still giants on the earth. And, lol, while I was in the men's room line some guy asked "How many bass players in here?" 2/3 of the guys there raised their hands. |

For the Wootens? Yep. And I concur. Vic said he found the guy teaching school??!! Can't imagine any drum chair anywhere that his presence wouldn't grace. |
