Rami:

It almost sounds like a super PRS-type set up. Just think about whether you will need to change on the fly. A 7-way rotary might take a little more attention than one can give it during a song. I know my 5-position rotary on my CE24 is not conducive to changes mid-song. I think it might help to at least have a chicken-head knob. But what do I know about bass?

Here's the pickups in spray:
rami's pickups
The control layout will be somewhat limited since we only have one backplate on this bass. The preamp card will be mounted to the backplate, and that limits the size of the components underneath.

Rami - I love that mode selector concept - will think about it when I get 'round to building the Baby Dragon.

How about an "off" setting as well?

Sorry Paul, I couldn't resist the urge to bring that idea up any longer.
Another thread about audiophiles got me to look closer at my old McIntosh amp. That's when I remembered the parallel between McIntosh and Alembic - innovation in design and electronics. It may delay the birth of the "Black Byrd", but since it'll probably be a while before I contemplate another, it's still worth it.
And Who knows? It may not even be feasible in the end. Until it's done, it's still just an idea.
I'll leave the "off" setting to the power supply.

Rami

You mean I started more sh*t with my stupid audiophile thread? LOL!

Go for it, Rami! A wise man once told me: "it's only money and you'll make more", LOL!

See Kevin? It's thanks to YOU that I got this weird idea! Think of it as your contribution.

Now I have someone ELSE to blame for the delay!!!
(Just kidding)

hi

I cant wait to see this one rami i love the wooden pickup covers i love dark woods as much as you and am looking forward to one day getting my very own custom Alembic.

I like the idea cof having a mode selecter swich and think it would be cool to have an off setting on it so you can try things like Blasko from Rob Zombie and Tom Morrello from audioslave who rapidly switch it on and off to gain a shimmery effect.

i cant wait to see the completed pictures
Andrew

Thanks for the kind words Andrew.

I CAN'T WAIT EITHER!!!!!

My problem with the OFF or Standby mode is that if it were put on the MODE selector, I'd have to jump through several positions to get to it. It was always something I never liked on my current Series II, because it's on the same switch as the pickup selector. Any OFF/Standby would have to be a separate two way switch that wouldn't change any control settings along the way. For this one, I don't think that amidst all the beautiful ebony knobs that a switch would fit in with the look. So I'll just leave it for the power supply.

By the way, I'm a HUGE Audioslave fan. I love everything that Chris Cornell ever did, from his days with Soundgarden, his solo stuff, and with Audioslave. He's a true genius.

Rami already knows this, but the twins are on their way home. Hopefully customs won't try to keep them around too long.

Can't wait for you to see the new pickup finish (hint: if you like the way Valentino's looks, you will not be disappointed).

Hey rami.
I hadn't realised you were here in the uk either. Anywhere near Edinburgh? If you're ever passing give me a call and we could get together to talk 'alembic'.

Actually guys, I live in Montreal (Canada).
I've been to England many times and I absolutely LOVE it. I would even consider living there permanently. I was in London this past summer and had the time of my life. I met the nicest, friendliest people ever. The greatest cosmopolitan city in the world.
I'll definitely be back!

Dark Prince and Evil Twin arrived last week, safe and sound. They are PERFECT! They (Especially Dark Prince) actually looked better than when I first recieved them in '02. The finish has so much more depth. I had the same reaction when I opened their cases as the first time I ever saw them. They are back to their former glory.

Thanks Mica!

I don't know if the el-cheapo-single-use cameras that I've been using will really show the difference in the new finish. They look very much as they did when featured, but now the finish on Dark Prince's pickups and knobs is a deep lusterous (I love that word) gloss instead of the matte finish they had before. Check out Valentino's custom bass and you'll see what I mean. Also, the finish quality is much better. It's perfectly even and so, so deep; like a true show quality work of art.
I'll take a few pictures and see how they turn out.
