Hey Mark,
You know, I am really disapointed because I took the time to write you something nice and it somehow didn't make it here. So here goes again.
It takes a real man Mark to spend the time to write the words that you did about my bass.
You have been just that all the way through this process with me and I have learned alot from you because of the time that you spend explaining in detail your theories as well as your knowledge.
So I really have learned alot from you and gained knowledge from the things that you have shared in this forum. I am talking about all of the posts, not just in mine and yours.
So I would like to take this time to thank you from my heart and wish you all the best in life.
You are a good man.

This is so awesome. I am hoping that it gets shipped to my island of Hilo today. If it does before 5 I can go pick it up. If not it has to wait until Monday (which is the projected arrival time anyway) but if I can cut a fat hog in the A--, I'm sure going to try.
Oh what pain and agony if not, knowing that my bass is a alone in the UPS station at the airport all weekend, all by itself, what a bummer. But unfortunately they don't have Saturday delivery here in Hilo.

Like a kid on Christmas eve huh? I know the feeling- when Charles shipped the Rogue from Georgia to NZ it seemed like it took W-E-E-K-S to get there. Then the wait through customs....
If you know any of the guys at UPS you might see if you can talk them into letting you swing by the airport on Saturday to nab it. That approach has worked for me before.
Either way- enjoy it when it arrives and don't forget to holler once you finally take a break.

Just a follow-up,
Mica, thank you very much for sticking to your plans and getting it out by Friday. This is also proof for you that when you ship overnight and it leaves your office late in the afternoon, UPS still means business. Cuz look at the results above.
Within 12 hours of leaving your office it already went from Petaluma to Oakland to Ontario and finally on a plane to Honolulu at 4:53 am Hawaii time. That is as Mark would put it "Freaking" amazing!!!

Oh ya Toby,
You are right. My UPS driver is a pretty good friend of mine and he always does the best favors he can. So you are right. Maybe I should talk to him this afternoon when he's in the area and see. So good on Toby. Nice to here from ya also.
Ya Man, this is bringing back that old feeling of when I was a kid. Christmas Eve-----Oh man, waiting and wondering, the adrenaline <sp? it's a rush beleive me, and I'll be hollering, if I can still holler that is!!! I shouldn't even talk. I might not be able to type, who knows.
I've seen some of our buddies in here promise and promise, and then when it arrives we beg and beg beg and they just come around when they come around.
So thanks anyway for the heads up stuff Toby and I'll be talking to ya. The tracking just changed but it's still left open on "In Transit To" Honolulu. But I think it's there and it may be in transit to the smaller carrier that ships to this island. So I'm going to be on this thing all day.
I'm still honestly not getting my hopes up of getting it till Monday cuz as my old saying goes "Expectations are premeditated resentments". So I'm just hoping for but not expecting.

Hey Bill,
It's funny you said that because I was just tallking to my 4 year old son this morning saying if they had the new superferry (which just started running between Oahu and Maui and Kauai) running between the Big Island here and Oahu, we could have just takin our van or car over on the ferry today and picked it up. So you were close even in you kidding around. Unforetunately the Superferry won't be operating to our island until sometime in 2008 or 2009.

P.S. Believe me, this weekend is really gonna go slow because it's just sitting over there in limbo. Probably just sitting on a plane or on some little dummy trailer waiting to load the plane. Actually I don't know how they work it though. I'm not sure if they keep working behind the scenes on Saturday and are flying it over here today. It's just that there office and delivery personel might not be working Saturday. It might already be over here. I could go break in and find out!LOLOLOLOL |

Hey Everybody,
It's Monday morning and my bass is at UPS here. I called the 800 number and asked them to get alhold of our station and put a stop on the truck delivery so that I could pick it up because he comes to my house late in the afternoon. They said they would try and took my number.
Within 5 minutes my driver (who is my friend) called me on his cell and said he already had it loaded by that it was my choice. I told him I kind of wanted to pick it up myself cuz I was excited and he said "why, you can't open it until tomorrow anywayLOLOL"? We lauged but he said whatever I wanted and said he would take it off the truck and leave it there for me. He said he hadn't located the second package with the control box and wiring but I am sure it's there.
So that's the latest. I just opened our store as there will be many last minute shoppers today but it is pouring rain and the front was flooded where I move all of our clothes racks out to.
As soon as my wife comes and relieves me here my son and I will be off to pick up Mele Aloha.

Congrats on your wait being almost over, Paul!!! I look forward to hearing your review.
I couldn't be any happier with my new 6-string; it's just absolutely amazing, COMPLETELY satisfying in every way!
I sure hope you feel the same way.
I'm curious to hear what you end up thinking about the lack of bass and treble controls.
Worse case scenario is it'll be a very minor issue. Any decent amp has eq controls on it; but the Alembic filter & q system is unique, and just can't be beat. |

Hello Mark, Art, and Paul,
Thanks for contacting me. First of all, Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to you.
I've just wired up the DS-5R Power Supply earlier and have been cooking dinner for my wife and son and now focusing on getting my son to bed.
While he is having his milk in the main part of the house and my wife is on her computer near the tree, I am out in my carport/shed/office/jam room hooking up my bass under the shimmering of Christmas lights. I can hardly see my bass as I open the case with "It's a Wonderful Life" on the wall mounted TV and the sound coming through my Yamaha PA with Bose 201's and an old RCA subwoofer that I got from Radioshack about 10 years ago.
I gently lift the case of Mele Aloha and try to find the flat spot of the 5 pin cord which came with the DS-5R. This cord carries not only the power for the 18 volt pre-amps but also for the Blue laser LED's protruding from the Ebony fingerboard and the side fret markers.
Inset in the Oval Abalone shell in the lowly faded setting the blue lasers light up the whole Abalone Oval. On the 5th fret the blue laser sets between the 2 Mother of Pearl Coconut Palm Trees like the Northern Star Hokulea.
The smell of the freshly built bass with the odor of the new case fills the air when I lift the lid. Every second as I type to you I think of the awesome times I have had the last year seeing basses being built, seeing them being shipped out, hoping and praying that there won't be anything that holds up my beauty from being built or delivered.
I created many challenges which Mica and Susan handled like they had been doing this for most of their lives. And indeed they proved that they could overcome any challenge that comfronted them.
As I listen to Wonderful Life in the background I am brought back to reality by the Volkswagon commercial song "Roller Coaster", "Roller Coaster" with an awesome Bass popping notes in the background and I am immediately brought back to my senses that I am getting to deep into discription with you. Possibly because of the certain Christmas Cheers that I am indulging in.
So on that note, what do ya say I go get that baby out of the case for the first time and put "myself" to the test. I'll be right back as soon as I put my son to bed and try the bass.

Amazingly just as I struck the P above on my computer the phone rang. It is 9:34 here which is 11:34 pm California time. Low and behold guess who is on the phone but Mica and Susan. Unbelievably they are calling me on Christmas Eve to make sure that the bass arrived and to wish me and my family "Mele Kalikimaka" in their very own words and tell me a little about the instruments sounds they heard while testing it out before packing. What an awesome surprise!
By the way friends, Susan is still coughing and didn't sound to good so if you could all send here a Christmas Cheer I'm sure it would be warmly accepted. She has been ill since before Thanksgiving.
Well you guys, I must now break to put out Santa toys and assemble a John Deere tractor to put around the tree so I will return with a sound check.

Paul, you don't know me but I've been following this thread for about a month. Your expressions of gratitude and appreciation, especially today, whether it is for your wonderful new bass or for the fullness of your life, is a great Christmas present to me.
And tomorrow (or the next day) I'll be taking my 'new' Essence out of the case too.

It's kind of like I don't know how to act in here now that I recieved my instrument. And by the way Michael, congradulations on your Essence. I hope that it meets all of your expectations and then some!
I barely got a chance to play mine last night and had to come work at the store today after having a fun time opening presents this morning.
I can tell you though that the bass is absolutley beautiful. With the blue laser lights on the front and side fret markers, it is absolutely gorgeous! And the action is perfect so far.
SSSssooo, I am happy right now!
That's about all I have for now. I will inform you tonite or tomorrow when I dig in a little more.
I hope you are all having a very Merry Christmas!

Hey Paul, how ya doin' witcha new toy...?
Pretty overwhelming, huh? It's okay, you'll have a lifetime together.
Listen to the voice of experience here, for just a second.
Since you previously indicated you WERE NOT familiar with the filter/Q system, let me just "cover the bases" and make sure you know something about the filters.
To really hear what they do and understand their practical effect on the sound, first use the pickup selector and select the individual pickups;
Then, set your CVQs up 1/2way or more and trill/hammer-on with your fretting hand (RIGHT hand -in your LEFT-handed case) while rolling the filter from one extreme to the other.
Pick one of the middle frets on the middle string as your reference. Trill, say the 11th and 12th frets of your A string with your fretting hand while turning the filter for whichever pickup you're using with the plucking and (LEFT in your case).
This'll REALLY let you hear what the filter and Q do.
It's quick and easy.
Maybe you already know this... you probably do... but just in case, try it, I wanted to make sure. Cause doing this helps your brain/ear understand how the filter & Q work, and how to use 'em!!!

Thanks Mark very much for taking the time to coach me.
It's amazing how fast it comes. It's not at all as confusing as I thought it was going to be. Within a half hour I already have the knob pattern down pat. You just get use to which knobs do what. I know alot of people look at all those knobs on a Series II and think geeze how are going to remember what the heck is going on. But it's nothing like that. Basically you just isolate a section which is each pick-up and then you know exactly which ones to touch to dial in a tone. The thing is that there is so much possiblities of tones that it's endless. It's so so so amazing.
The body is so firm. It's just so beautiful.
I have to admit, at first I was really kind of bumbed because I didn't have much time when I recieved it and it's been raining here solid for weeks and my amps are out in my kind of simi open carport so I didn't want to bring it out in all of this humidity. Then I got a horrible cold on Christmas Eve/morning and have been sick ever since so I just didn't have the adrineline to play.
Plus what I started to mention is that I requested the action be set low and by the time it got here the strings were almost touching the frets. The were banging on them when I played and I didn't want to attempt to adjust it without get talked through with Base. But tonite I am feeling better and I just looked at it for a while and a great kit comes with it with all the tools so I took a chance at just raising the bridge since the neck is PERFECT. It has that (and I mean just a hair of a little bend where it's supposed to) and so I knew I didn't want to go to the truss rods. So I got the little allen wrench that is for the bridge and that's all it took. MAN, I mean I am so happy just to have the option of that adjustment. And I mean this bass is so solid that when you turn those allens to raise/lower the bridge it works perfect. It's not like some cheaper basses where you turn those and there is a whole bunch of stress and the thing bends. This thing is unbeleivable. You just turn the allens and that bridge just goes up and down ever so smmoooootth with no tension. Is all I had to do each time is retune whenever I change it a little.
Oh Mark, not to be insensitive but honestly with these Series there is absolutely NO NEED for tone controls because you literally have total tonal control with these adjustments. As somebody said is what you do is just set your amps (plural because I am running two amps for the stereo effect) to the basic sound range that you want and then you do all the adjustments on your bass. These controls go from fat lows (neck Pick-up)and then you can turn the filter and all of a sudden you are having these metallic crisp highs out of that pick-up or you blend to your bridge pick-up and find your crisp high's in there or bring it down and blend. It's just ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!!! Who was it that talked about how I would soon be experiencing those Wah effects. Ya those come with the variable CVQ's. They are kind of like little wah wah knobs. Especially the bridge pick-up q (CVQ). Amazing!!!
Hey Mica and family, thanks for the Christmas Card in my Owners package. I just found that tonite but really the late-night (I mean literally 11:30 or so pm) call from your whole family the night that it arrived Christmas Eve was WAY over the top with LOVE. You guys are GREAT!
I'll throw one thing in here just so that people that are just tuning in to this site don't think that maybe I work for the company as a sales person. My little switch for my seperation of lasers/side lites doesn't work. I know that this is appropriate to say here because it's something that later on I can open up the back, trace out the wires and have you folks or Ron walk me through on the phone to rectify so NO WORRIES! I mean you guys were pumping out product to make Christmas good for many customers that I am not worried about such a little thing.
You can tell this thing has pumped up the Love that was missing in me for a while now so I'll cutt'er short so that you can get a chance to read this. LOL.

Paul, Sorry I missed the blessed event. There has been so much going on in my life lately that I haven't had much time to stay in contact with the extended Alembic family. Your new baby looks just fantastic. I'm saving a photo of it in my Alembic collection file.You make me want to have another one built! (my wife would kill me!)It's cool to know that the Raging Bass has a cousin in another part of the world. I'm curious to know how well it holds up in the humid climate of the islands as opposed to where I am in the very dry climate of Utah. If I ever make it to Hawaii, I'd love to look you up.
