Hi Jim,

Thanks for the concern. You wouldn't believe how much this hurricane petered out. It was really looking strong and promising as far as filling all of our water tanks but it literally disappeared. Alot of us here on this island have a water catchment system for our household water and as you may have heard there is a pretty good drought going on here so our tanks are running low to the point where many of people have had to purchase truck loads of water this year.

Since we get over 200 inches of rain a year here on a average year I love the drought in that it makes for beautiful weather in a what is mostly rainy area. Fortunately the last hurricane about a month or so ago that came through dumped way more rain (about 8-10" in 24 hours) and topped off my tank in the first two hours so we have been fine. But I was right at the brink of and infact calling many water hauling companies at that time to no avail when the hurricane arrived.

So all is well here. The only thing is that the Hilo Farmer's Market where our store is took down all of the gray tarps that cover the whole market so that they wouldn't rip off and blow away and today is Farmer's Market day. Fortunately again our store is the only business that is in a building there so we are open today as well as every day and they are frantically rushing since two o'clock this morn to get all the tarps back up for the other vendors. I'll try and attach a picture so you can see what I mean. This is before the storm. I can't seem to get the after picture of tarps taken down because of to many pixels. I've tried everything to reduce but believe me it's a mess. Bottom line is we were the only ones that got to open and sell today so alot of people lost money today which for some I'm sure is their grocery money. All schools were also closed today there was no need as the storm is gone.
Coconut Cave

As far as the pics I think they are really trying to put together a beautiful bass for me and surprise me so I am trying to be as patient as possible! I hope to see it soon but I love and respect these people for who they are and what they do and don't want to pressure them in any way. You know they are working their butts off as by seeing the pictures that Mica just posted it is very evident that they are doing as much as they can without compromising the quality of craftsmanship (or I should say Artistry). And I'm just judging by what I saw but I know there's a heck of alot going on that I don't even know about.

Thanks again for concern and checking in with me. Again I really love your sound sample of your new bass and am trying to work on that technique of pop/slapping that you have. I just can't quite get it.

Do you have any suggestions on sites to go to to get training? I know there are alot of them I am just asking you which ones if any you like.

Take care Jim, Patient Paul!

Paul,

You're taking a very good approach- sit back and enjoy the ride... I'm sure when it arrives that the wait will have been well worth it.

Paul, very glad you & yours are well! We'll be in your neck of the woods again next year (because we're definitely in love with the people of Kaua'i). Thanks much for the kind words. For training I really like Victor Wooten's site. His lessons are basic, but profound. Check him out! www.victorwooten.com There are others too - I'll send more soon.

Aloha!

Core with Koa accent laminates in place:
core up close

And James finished the inlays:

Which turned out really great! The fingerboard should get glued to the neck later this week, and the body to the neck shortly after.

Woo-Hoo! Congrats, Paul, your project is looking great!

It looks like you've got an especially pretty fingerboard -with the subtle streaking and all- and your body core looks great as well. It's a really cool combination... the first time I can recall seeing Koa for accent laminates. And it WILL look much cooler with the finish on it, have no doubt. The Flame Maple looks a lot less exciting in the unfinished stage.

Congrats on your bass and on your patience; I know you've been "Jone-zing" for pictures and an update!!!

Rollin' along now. Those inlays look killer and the flame body with Koa laminates is gonna be awesome when finish hits.

I think some of my wishes are being revealed in this picture-

I think I see little signs of sapwood!

Bradley!!!! Where are you? You gotta come see this-

I think I see some sapwood!!!!

As I compare these side views with the May 30 pics above I definately see the sapwood being incorporated in the inner edges meeting the neck.

YYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Mica!? Is that sapwood? Tell me it is-please!

This--- is going to be AWESOME!!!!

The inlays are also great Mica. Good Job!

From this last picture I am seeing a beautiful meld of color combos. Very nice job before the Labor day weekend folks. Thanks very much. I am stoked. it's nice to see my dream taking shape. This is a milestone.

Amen!

Oh, now I see. Maybe the sapwood might get cut off which is OK too. No problemo! I know this baby is going to be the bomb either way.

Thanks, Paul

Paul I saw a post of yours regarding shipping in the section you want other members staying out of.

I have my instruments insured through Heritage, a company that specializes in instruments. If you're counting on your homeowners policy to cover it, I recommend you make 100% sure they'll cover it. As I understand it, if you play professionally at all, most companies WILL NOT cover it under homeowners policies.

If you have any interest, you could call toll free at 1 800 289 8837 (eastern standard time), and ask for Matt Hershman. They have good rates, and cover just about everything will a few exceptions (including damage from rodents, insects, nuclear incidents, war, and damage/theft from/by "government" entities.

Just sharing this with you in case you're interested; I don't care if you get it or not, I'm not pushing it on you, and I won't bring it up again.

Take care, mon frere! Best wishes!!!

It is absolutely true that most homeowner's insurance does not cover musical equipment, and if it does the policies tend to be subject to so many exceptions that they are nearly worthless. For instance, many policies provide that if you use your gear on a paying gig - even once - it is considered to be business equipment and thus excluded.

I insure my gear through Heritage as well, and recommend them very highly. Their policies insure against all kinds of loss...accidental damage, theft, shipping damage, etc. When I snapped the headstock off of my brand-new Series II they paid me full value for the instrument within a few weeks instead of insisting upon a repair. You can read about the whole sad story, and more about Heritage, here: http://alembic.com/club/messages/393/28504.html

Bottom line: we all need to make sure that our gear is fully insured!

Your standard Home-Owners won't cover it for very much but most will allow you can take out a rider for the intruments just like on Jewelry.

You may have to get the instrument(s) appraised unless you purchased them new then you should be able to use your receipt for proof of value.

But as Steve said they probably won't let you take out the rider if they are used proffesionaly.

Amen to the Bottom Line Steve.

This is going to be an absolutely amazing bass, I can't wait to see it completed. What island do you live on? The reason I ask is I visit hawaii once a year or so to see my brother in law, he lives in Kailua.

I've got a government job (well, not a civilian, but government no less) - my problem (if one can call it that) is I keep buying more! Especially Alembics!

Paul, you're going to love your bass. Trust me!

Hi deburgh,

I live on the Big Island of Hawaii in Hilo. We have a "Kailua-Kona" on the other side of this island but your b-i-l probably lives in Kailua, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. That is where Waikiki is which is on the other side of the island from Kailua but a very beautiful place indeed.

Thanks for the nice compliments on my bass, as you know I can't wait to see it either but it's a long process to build these beauties!

Aloha, Paul

Hi again Paul

Yes, he lives on Oahu. Next time we go there we hope to go spend a week or so on the big island, I've been on Oahu and Maui but never there, and I hear it's breathtaking! There's a golf course or two there that I've seen pictures of that I just have to see :-)

Take care,
Todd

I think I better come in here and say thank's to all of you for your nice compliments. Thank you guys.

I am ecstatic, mesmorized, (I don't want to say to much cuz my spelling is terrible and Bradley might nail me) but I am all the things you could think of to explain Happy and Content<sp.haha

I just didn't come in and mention that right away because I had been communicating with Mica about my order and already thanked her so much for the nice pictures and since then I've been sort of speachless as one might imagine.

I just love Alembic basses so much that it's hard to expain. My friend just got one of those Saber Infrared basses with no magnetic pick-ups and he's so excited about it that he was trying to tell me over the phone how I might be able to keep my order going with my Alembic and just order the Infrared bridge and have them install it and "this and that". Geeze, he just doesn't know how in Love with this bass that I have ordered. He even has an Alembic Rogue but he didn't custom order it, he bought it outright and he just doesn't have the heartfelt appreciation that I have for my Custom Series II.

You guys know what I'm talking about. There is just nothing on Earth happening right now that could beat what I have going on with Alembic.

I am so in Love with this bass order that somedays I get really frustrated and other days I am in Heaven. I know that when I actually have the bass in hand there is going to be an emptyness inside because a big part of the thrill is the ride.

But I have to tell you that I am so relieved now that I can see my baby. It's like these pictures that Mica sends are the ultrasound pictures of my bass. It finally has legs and arms and I can tell, its a boy!

Keep on keepin on Alembic. You are the best. There is no other replacement.

Aloha and Mahalo! Paully
