Hi Mica, Request as follows; nut width = 1.4"(35.6mm) each edge allowance: 0.15"(3.8mm) each string center to center at nut = 0.342"(8.7mm) each string center to center at bridge = 0.708"(18.0mm) Shoji |

Hi Shoji, Normally we make the nut center to center spacing and the bridge edge to edge spacing. For your request above for center to center spacing at both ends, the fingerboard will be 1.40 x 2.24 inches. This will make the fingerboard wider than on the Red Tiger bass. Please confirm that I have correctly understood your change request. These are the computed details: ################################################## id = shoji scale length = 30.75 string dia. 1=.045 2=.065 3=.080 4=.105 at nut end: fingerboard width = 1.4 treble edge allowance = .15 bass edge allowance = .15 string center 1 to 2 = 0.341666666666667 string center 2 to 3 = 0.341666666666667 string center 3 to 4 = 0.341666666666667 spacing between 1 and 2 = 0.286666666666667 spacing between 2 and 3 = 0.269166666666667 spacing between 3 and 4 = 0.249166666666667 at bridge end: treble edge allowance = .15 bass edge allowance = .15 string center 1 to 2 = .708 string center 2 to 3 = .708 string center 3 to 4 = .708 spacing between 1 and 2 = 0.653 spacing between 2 and 3 = 0.6355 spacing between 3 and 4 = 0.6155 string edge to edge = 2.199 (projected) fingerboard width at bridge = 2.499 fingerboard width at nut = 1.4 fingerboard width at 24th fret = 2.22425 fingerboard width at 25th fret = 2.2396705325907 fingerboard length = 23.4939662212595 ####################################### |

Hi Mica, Thanks for the heads-up. I checked with the Changes / Additions Record of the Red Tiger bass. http://alembic.com/club/messages/631/37159.html?1173365312 According to your post, the 24th fret of Red Tiger is 2.25. I think the 2.25 dimension is wider than 2.22425 on this project. Have I got you wrong? Shoji |

Hi Mica, Will you specify your suggestion of the bridge edge to edge spacing. That will help my understanding. Shoji |

I've had your bass on hold while we figure out exactly what you want on this bass. I checked the file for your Red Tiger bass, and the fingerboard is 1.4 x 2.25 strung with your supplied Rotosound strings in gauges .030 .040 .060 .080. Here's how those details compute with our normal style of side-to-side spacing at the bridge: ############################################### id = shoji's re tiger bass scale length = 30.75 string dia. 1=.030 2=.040 3=.060 4=.080 at nut end: fingerboard width = 1.4 treble edge allowance = .15 bass edge allowance = .15 string center 1 to 2 = 0.348333333333333 string center 2 to 3 = 0.348333333333333 string center 3 to 4 = 0.348333333333333 spacing between 1 and 2 = 0.313333333333333 spacing between 2 and 3 = 0.298333333333333 spacing between 3 and 4 = 0.278333333333333 at bridge end: treble edge allowance = .15 bass edge allowance = .15 string center 1 to 2 = 0.705 string center 2 to 3 = 0.72 string center 3 to 4 = 0.74 spacing between 1 and 2 = .67 spacing between 2 and 3 = .67 spacing between 3 and 4 = .67 string edge to edge = 2.22 (projected) fingerboard width at bridge = 2.52 fingerboard width at nut = 1.4 fingerboard width at 24th fret = 2.24 fingerboard width at 25th fret = 2.25571519244913 fingerboard length = 23.4939662212595 ############################################### If you notice, the strings are slotted center-to-center at the nut where you aim for the center of the string when you fret a note. At the bridge end, the dimensions shift to side-to-side spacing since you generally are aiming for the edge of the strings with that hand. There is no notation on the order for Red Tiger that the spacing was ordered as spaced center-to-center at the bridge, so I'll assume that it was done in our normal side-to-side fashion. You can compare the measurements and see if the spaces between the strings are close (with a couple of thousandth of an inch) to confirm. To make the bass like you requested at the top of this thread, the fingerboard would be 1.4 x 2.21. The details are here: ################################################## id = shoji center to center scale length = 30.75 string dia. 1=.045 2=.065 3=.080 4=.105 at nut end: fingerboard width = 1.4 treble edge allowance = .15 bass edge allowance = .15 string center 1 to 2 = 0.341666666666667 string center 2 to 3 = 0.341666666666667 string center 3 to 4 = 0.341666666666667 spacing between 1 and 2 = 0.286666666666667 spacing between 2 and 3 = 0.269166666666667 spacing between 3 and 4 = 0.249166666666667 at bridge end: treble edge allowance = .15 bass edge allowance = .15 string center 1 to 2 = .7 string center 2 to 3 = .7 string center 3 to 4 = .7 spacing between 1 and 2 = 0.645 spacing between 2 and 3 = 0.6275 spacing between 3 and 4 = 0.6075 string edge to edge = 2.175 (projected) fingerboard width at bridge = 2.475 fingerboard width at nut = 1.4 fingerboard width at 24th fret = 2.20625 fingerboard width at 25th fret = 2.22133377846679 fingerboard length = 23.4939662212595 ################################################## So, after all that, I need to know from you: 1. which spacing style you want on this bass (side-to-side or center-to-center at bridge) and the space dimension. 2. are you supplying strings again? |

Hi Mica, Answers to your questions; 1. TBD 2. No One question for you; I still don't understand you said "The fingerboard will be 1.40 x 2.24 inches. This will make the fingerboard wider than on the Red Tiger bass." But your calculation shows the fingerboard on the Red Tiger is 1.4 x 2.25. I think that means the fingerboard on the projected bass is narrower than on the Red Tiger bass. What did you mean by that? Shoji |

My later restatements corrected the initial error. I mistakenly believed you had a 2.125 dimension at the 24th fret on your Red Tiger. That is why I posted the complete calculations for it. Do you intend to ever put such light strings on this new bass? |

Hi Mica, Okay, I will go for my original plan as follows; nut width = 1.4"(35.6mm) each edge allowance: 0.15"(3.8mm) each string center to center at nut = 0.342"(8.7mm) each string center to center at bridge = 0.708"(18.0mm) In reply to your query, I intend to put regular gauge strings 045-065-080-105 on this new bass.
