At long last it looks like my first gig of the year is happening on 25th February in Stockton-on-tees
http://www.arconline.co.uk/detail.php?id=2694

In the past I have played guitar with the band from about 2004 till 2009. However their new bass player is also the bass player for the reggae band Steel Pulse and will be in USA on a tour at the time of this gig so he has asked me to dep for him on bass.

I think I will be taking the Black Europa/Elan 5 bass

Congrats on the gig! Do you prefer playing guitar or bass?

I don't know now. My first musical desire when I was a kid was to play bass like Aston Barrett of the wailers. But Ive played more guitar in my life than bass. However I personally think owning an alembic bass made me start the migration to being a bass player. I think I prefer the sound I get on their basses above their guitar sound. I think I'm just a strings player really now. Thin ones or thick depending on the gig.

I hope I nevr have to make a final choice.

It's great that you have options! I think good bass players are much harder to find than good guitar players, but being good at both will definitely open more doors of opourtunity for you! Good luck on the gig!

Yeah its good to have the option of doing both. However the first call bass players in my area are pretty hot, versatile and available players and so pick up lots of the work. There was a period when I used to get quite a lot of guitar gigs before I became unavailable due to touring regularly and I guess other guitarists took up those gigs I may have been asked to do.

I'm really looking forward to the gig and maybe I can get more on the back of this one.

Interestingly, I've done loads of guitar gigs playing reggae but this is the first full gig I will have done playing reggae as a bass player. So this will be hi-fi reggae.

The gig went really well. I found out on the way down that the bands sound engineer is also a bass player so he was keen to see my bass and give me good clear sound. He also told me that you have to be careful with the lower mids with reggae as they get in the way. At sound check he was pretty impressed with the sound of my bass and said the sub frequencies were extremely clear and powerful, so my sound ended up being predominantly neck pickup with filter fully closed and a touch of crispness from the bridge pickup.
Interestingly at first we used the di out from my Mesa walkabout but the on stage volume was too high and with the prevalence off the subs it was creating a boomy sound which meant we couldnt hear he attack and note separation very
clearly on stage so I went direct to di then out to my amp and mixing desk. That way I could take some of the subs out of my onstage sound enabling us to hear the notes clearly without affecting what I was giving to the FOH sound.

It was all recorded so I hope to get a copy to hear sometime this week coming..

Apart from that I had a chat after the gig with a very enthusiastic bass player who said he loved my bass playing and thought my bass sounded like "royalty". He plays a fender precision and he had never actually heard of alembic. Plus he was very drunk.

All in all it was a great night even though we didn't have a particularly big crowd.

Glad the gig went well! I have had issues with my bass sounding boomy from our subs too, so I'll have to try going to the di first too & see if that helps. Many times my bandmates will say I'm too loud onstage, when what they are hearing is the PA, not my amp. The first gig I did with my Alembic, my bass sounded so good coming out of my amp that the soundman didn't even put it in the mains! I hope to hear the recording of your show soon!

Hey that would be great FC. I know their gig schedule is picking up and talk of an Australian tour this year but I'm not in the band a such It was a Dep gig so who knows when I will get the next call. But sure if we do Holland I will take you up on the offer and get you on the gig list.

Only the Keyboard player and the singer are still with the band these days.

Is their new bass player Amlak? I used to into him a bunch at festivals with Steel Pulse when I was on the road more. If so, great player!

Sounds like a lot of fun, it's good to know they're still at it!

Here are a few pics that have come through from the gig on Sunday afternoon. As you can see I decided to take the Bocate Europa 5 instead of the black one.

The gig went great. Before we started the main stage area was sparsely populated, by the time we got into the third number it was jam packed.

I actually used a small ampeg combo as the big ampeg rig wasn't working. Shame. I was looking forward to plugging into a big rig.

Is this the bass you added the ACG preamp to? Looking at the control layout there and it seems 'non-standard'.

How do you set your filters to get that fat, warm, thump that drives reggae? Are you going for a traditional reggae bass sound or something with a bit more clarity and definition?

Yeah this is the bass with the ACG filters in. It actually has low and high pass filters for each pickup with CVQ on the low pass and gain on the high pass. My tonal reference for bass is very much trying to get the kind of sound Aston Barrett gets for his bass lines so I avoid setting the cut off so low that the articulation is lost. Normally the neck low pass filter is set to roughly give me the kind of sound i would get in the closed position on an alembic signature filter. I then have the bridge filter about 60% open with the Q about 50% and volume about 5% so that it just gives me an edge to the notes.

I always get this wrong but I think the lowest frequency cut off on the filter is about 80HZ which I tried setting on the first bass gig I did with the band. Although the sound guy loved the fact I could get that low on the subs cleanly and boost the very low end, the problem for me was that it is pretty hard to hear the articulation on stage through the cab or monitors when all you have is the really low end, so I haven't used that end of the filter much since that time

I think If I had a high wattage 18" speaker cab or a sub as part of my bass rig, that end of the spectrum would be more useable at volume.

As good as those ACG filters are, they are not as quiet as alembic filters, and as much as the alembic cut off is far higher 350Hz , there is still a lot of subs in the bottom end to give some righteous dub bass.

The high pass filters are not as useable as you may think as they do bring in a lot of finger noise and can be tiresome on the ears if you get into the clack clack frequencies and use anything more than minimal gain.

My original reason for getting them was to see if I could get a cheaper Series II sound. But now I have one I can hear they have nothing in common. :-)

Cell phone video + me listening on a laptop = I see Jazzy, but don't hear Jazzy :-)

Sure looks like the crowd was enjoying it though and I could see people moving in time to what I know the baseline is, so I'm pickin' the bass was right where it needed to be. I love that song- nice slice of my childhood right there.

Also on that video I was playing guitar with the band and now I'm holding down the bass. Both Alembics of course.

Well I have a gig tonight at Birmingham Symphony Hall with Musical Youth.

http://www.thsh.co.uk/event/jamaicas-50th-12/
It's for JAMAICA'S 50TH INDEPENDENCE CULTURAL EXTRAVAGANZA AND SALUTE TO THE ATHLETES SHOW.. Yes a bit of a mouthful of a title.

Anyway this will be my first gig with my new Series II bass and as far as I know we are only doing 3 numbers as there is a big roster of artistes on the show.

Just to let you know everything went great for the gig. We were using the house band's back line which was a warwick rig. 4x10 and 1x15 not sure of the amp but it had lots of lights and shiny stuff on it. :-).

DS-5 was ok but did crackle a bit when first plugged in but after it warmed up it was fine.
Anyway here is the story.
In the dressing room both myself and the guitarist like to warm up before playing live so had our guitar/bass out and playing stuff unplugged. Then we find the dressing room is shared with about 4 other bands and virtually all the musicians were stopped in their tracks when they saw my bass. So then all the questions were firing like what bass is that, how much did it cost, how beautiful it looks, what the wood, what the hell are all those knobs for, it looks like you have a mixing desk in that bass. None of them had ever seen an alembic before so they all wanted a photo of it so out came the phones, iPads, camera's to take pics of it.

When I finished playing my set and came off stage there was lots of raving about how great the bass sounded. Which was good to hear because from where I was situated I don't think I was hearing the full sound as I was on a small riser with the bass rig about 18" behind me. But I'm pretty confident that if it sounded good back stage, then it must have sounded great out front.

I was really happy with the way the bass felt to play. The balance was perfect as Europa's are.
As it was reggae I used the neck pickup with the filter fully closed and CVQ off and just cracked open the bridge pickup with its filter about half open to get more of an attack on the note on the last track. But having said that, there was still a nice attack on the note with just the neck pickup selected. I was really just experimenting to be honest but I also know my experience of hearing other bands play at that venue, that electric basses tend to sound woolly there and I wanted to make sure there was some clarity being heard out front.

So there we are, it's had it's first public outing at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, what better place to start it's live music career with me.

We have another gig on Friday which I will put as a new post.

Were you in the main hall V? I used to love hearing classical music in there - the acoustics are incredible.
Can't make it to high wycombe I'm afraid although I did go there once in 1984 for an interview with Parker Knoll - in IT, not making their chairs though !

Yep Jacko we were in the big main hall. The acoustics are great but I've always found that electric basses don't sound as good there as other instruments. That could of course be down to the sound engineer or my ears because I generally find bass sound from large live stages in the main muffled and less than clear except Stanley Clarke and recently Marcus Miller.

I think it is my favourite now Rusty but not my first choice of bass to take out on all gigs since I'm not up with the controls to feel comfortable at the moment. Reggae gigs I guess would be fine because there isn't that much tonal changes I'd need to make on a gig. But I'll be using it next week on a festival gig doing some Jazz/funk stuff from Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Grover Washington Jr and Lee Ritenour.

But for my next gig I'll be using the black Europa.

Yikes! I hate it when that happens. The last time for me was a gig in Cleveland, which was about 500 miles out of our way. We didn't even get to talk to manager. We showed up to a locked venue. Of course, that didn't compare to showing up to a gig at a theater in Milwaukee and finding the fire department watering down the last ashes of the building....

I hope you get something out of the promoter for your troubles.

I'm doing this gig with Musical Youth tomorrow at the New Cross Inn, London

http://www.newcrossinn.com/?p=2&id=549

Not sure if I'm playing bass or guitar for this one. The guitarist is out of the country on another gig at short notice so I've been asked to stand in on guitar and the bass will be handled by a guy who was covering for bass before I took on that role.
However he has a gig in the daytime so I'm carrying bass and guitar just in case he gets held up or can't make it to London in time.

That would be the most expensive Alembic ever: Custom doubleneck, made en delivered within one day :-)

They would have to rent a (big) plane, rearrange the interior of that plan to a makeshift workshop and build it while travelling to the nearest airport where your gig is.
I think it would be best to take a near finished guitar and bass, cut them up and attach them to each other.
For finish I would suggest they pick up the Rickenbacker crew with their UV cure spray booth, since the woods of the guitar and bass probably won't match I think a solid finish would look better.
You can always have the bass shipped back to Alembic after the gig for a refinish that meets Alembic standards.
I think this can be done for a few 100K dollars (including the refinish) ask Mica/Susan to be sure.

Btw: Come to Holland and have fun at the gig!

Sorry Jazzy, that kind of cash is way above my pay grade! This might be a cheaper option -

Just got back from the gig which went great. A good appreciative nostalgic crowd is always good to play for. I took my Black Elan/Europa 5 for this gig.

Anyway I had an embarrasing moment on the encore to share with you.

We came back out to do the encore and singer did a lot of talking then the drummer rolled us in and as I proceeded to play the starting notes of the track.......yikes... NO SOUND from my bass. I had put it onto standby when we left the stage.
Although I was able to turn the bass off standby quickly, the singer pulled the ace saving graces of bad starts in reggae
" The Wheel back " So we were able to re-start the track again in a stylistic way wiithout the audience being aware.... I hope.

Phew first time I've ever done that. Anyone else started playing a live gig only to find their bass still on standby.

Do you have any examples of "The wheel back" or any further explanation on how to do this? :-) Sounds like something I might be using with some "not always aware" musicians I am playing with... :P

Well some people call it "REWIND" basically its the musical equivalent of a DJ playing a record for a few seconds then spinning it backwards so that it starts again. So it's used by reggae artistes when they hear something in the music that sounds wrong or want to use it as an effect for getting the crowd worked up when it's a really popular track they are playing.

It's more than likely derived from the technique used by the early sound system DJ's in jamaica. But I will ask some more knowledgeable musicians for the true origin of it.

Jazzyvee: Enlightening! :-) So... do I have to make it sound backwards, then? A-la-Bakhithi Kumalo! ;) The hard part will be telling the guys to learn to play the tune in reverse, as if it wasn't hard enough to make them aware enough to play it correctly forward :-)

Just have a backwards sample cued up and ready to go. it doesn't matter what it is, as backwards sound is just cool!

For ease of use, if it were on a footswitch, you could even retrigger it in tempo.

I've heard this a bunch in reggae and also in hip hop.

Bad luck with your venue jazzy. Your Promoters need to be strung up.

Rusty.. The Mayan's didn't predict the end of the world. What they did document was the end of the 13th b'ak'tun (or 'long count' - approx 5125 years). There's plenty of reading about this on the internet but USA today sums it up nicely...
"Susan Milbrath, curator of Latin American Art and Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, stated that, "We have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end" in 2012"

So Jazzy, if you can't make it to texas on Saturday you could always come see Big Tuna in falkirk :-)

Jacko, I was joking about the Mayans. I don't put any stock in what they say because it is someone else's interpretation of what they were saying. A scientist from NASA said their circular calendar was like the old odometers on cars, once it reaches the end, it starts back over at zero! I'm sure the sun will rise tomorrow just like it did today & just like it will on Saturday. Have a great gig Saturday!
