Hi all,
I am in SF for a few days to attend the AES conference, and I wanted to know if any members of the club were in attendance, of if any one from the area wanted to have an impromptu mini-gathering

I have been attending the AES show when it is hosted in SF for a while over the years and its always a good time . Some of the folks from the Ampex list were planing an AES "dinner gathering "as well .

Are you attending the conference Bill? I would really like to meet you, and I'm here with a few friends who are interested in the SF scene.

Is there anywhere that would be cool for a meeting?

Wolf I hope everything works out and that you can make it to the show on sunday.

Not attending. I'll be around the house prepping for Halloween on Sunday. I'm in Alameda, over the Bay Bridge from SF. You're welcome to come by if you'd like to check out my Alembics and other guitars.

I would love to go one of these years. Given that my other gig (OK, one of my other gigs) is as a recording engineer, I've always wanted to check out the technical presentations. Colorado is just too far from SF or NYC. Some day....

Bill, I don't have any wheels unfortunately. I will let you know if I find a way to make it over there, but I am mostly confined to the city.

I hope you make it to a conference Edwin. It's very informative and a lot of fun.

Any word, Wolf?

UPDATE: I am in the city until Thursday, my flight has been cancelled due to hurricane Sandy.

I regret that I will not be able to attend this time. I have attended for decades in the past. I already missed saying hello to Peter Albin and others at the special "Sounds of San Francisco event" on Saturday !_BUMMER_.http://www.aes.org/events/133/press/?ID=180

Sorry you can't be here Wolf. I went to the SF Sounds event and had good conversations with Mario Cipollina and Joel Selvin. Both great guys and all to happy to hang out with the attendees. Mario showed me a picture of the only bass John ever designed, and Joel hinted that he may write a book about Bear.

It is cool that you were able to participate. I have had many great conversations at these shows with both legendary Musicians and Engineers. Peter Erskine the Drummer from Weather Report gave me one of his new CD's one time and signed it .English Electronics Engineer and Recording Desk designer Rupert Neve once took the time to answer my many questions and did so gladly.
What did that John Cipollina Bass look like ? Was it a modified Gibson EB-3 perhaps ?

That's really cool Wolf. Neve is here but I haven't talked to them yet.

John's bass looked like a triple Omega, and Mario said it was semi-hollow. It was a light colored wood, maybe a pale mahogany or alder. It had a p-bass pup in the neck, mudbucker in the middle, and a lipstick tube at the bridge with volume and tone for each, selector on the lower horn.

Mario said that the bass sounds really bad and is uncomfortable to play because the omega cutouts are very sharp and dig in to him when he plays it. The luthier killed himself shortly after completing the instrument, because it was a long build and he was bankrupt. Not a happy story, but Mario said he still has it and loves it because it's the only bass John ever designed.

Very sad indeed. It's too bad that the bass isn't as good as it could be. Mario said that he wants to loan it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because he wants everyone to enjoy it.

Last hours of my trip are being spent in the SF airport. I'm bummed that I have to go home without spending any time in the Haight or meeting up with any club members. Perhaps another time.
