First one in my diary for this year. It's the 80's weekender at Butlins Bognor Regism, UK on Friday 8th February 2013 playing bass for Musical Youth. Jazzyvee |

Back in the middle part of the 2000's i toured the USA with Apache Indian and Musical Youth. There is nothing in the diary for this year in the states but there is talk about doing some touring out of the UK this year with Musical Youth. If the USA gets into the schedule, I will post it here for sure. Jazzyvee |

Did a really good gig last night at an acoustic night at The Jam House in Birmingham with Wolverhampton based singer songwriter called Elizabeth Fields. http://www.simonsheridan.co.uk/efcollective/index.html Took my bocate Europa 5 with me for that one and my Phil Jones Briefcase, (that I used mainly for the DI), It was video'd so it will be interesting to see the results of that. The organiser who is an incredible acoustic guitarist came over to check out my bass after our set and said the bass sounded awesome out front. During our chat It transpires that he's also a bass player. Jazzyvee |

Just travelling back from my gig. I used my black Europa/élan bass and my bass rack. The venue was supposed to have a back line so i didn't need a speaker cab. As it happened they didn't have a cab so I went direct from f1-x d-I out into the pa and used the stage monitor for my stage sound. Unfortunately my monitor was crackling so not a good sound for me but the next band on after us were extremely complimentary about my bass playing and the sound of my bass. I took it as a genuine compliment because they are pro full time reggae musicians that I've toured with in the past as guitarist and they had no idea I was also a bass player. As it happened the gig went fantastically well. Jazzyvee |

Series I going on it's first public outing this evening. Taking my Bocate Europa 5 as well since there are a few marcus miller tracks in the set and with the neck pick up close to the bottom of the neck on the series I bass i can't guarantee accuracy when double thumbing.... so... more practice needed. Plus I can get closer to a fender ish sound with the bocate bass. Jazzyvee |

Series II getting it's first full length gig tomorrow night at the Yardbird Jazz Club in Birmingham, England. It's a venue frequented by almost as many musicians as regular punters so I should get some feedback to help me judge the difference between what I hear on stage and what can be heard out front. The gig i did the previous week with my Series I , there was a small vocal pa so my cab was providing sound into the room as well The engineer said there was masses of bottom end and top end but I could have done with more mid range to give it punch. There is a proper pa at tomorrow's venue so I hope to get a much better out front sound. Jazzyvee |

Hi Edwin, sorry for the delay getting back to you. The Series I bass sounded great but I'm still trying to get the hang of it. As the last gig I did with it was reggae I kept the neck pickup as the majority of the tone with it's filter off and dialled in some of the bridge to change the overall tone of the bass. However this also up's the volume so I have to then wind the neck pickup down and also the bridge to keep the relative balance. Times like this the pan pot and master volume is a blessing. :-) But I have them the way they are and have to get used to it. Got some major outdoor festivals this summer so that may be a good place to get a good blast with them both. Jazzyvee |

Gig on Sunday 26th May at the Caldmore Festival in Walsall with the band Khaliq. I had my one rehearsal with them last night which went great. I did the same festival with them last year when the bass player was out of the country on a a different tour. He has now left and they are keen for me to step in and do some work full band gigs with them. http://khaliqmusiq.co.uk To hear some of the tracks have a look at soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/khaliq I'm not playing on any of their existing material but I've been invited to do some bass on the next album which is being recorded next month. Sounds like you're going to be pretty busy V, good luck with the new band and style. It's good to have a few different projects going on. I've just been asked to join a grateful dead tribute which will mean learning a whole new set and a completely different approach to the bass as Phil could never be described as your typical rock bassist. Bill if you are reading, there were more dead people at my last gig than live people at this one. I'm not sure if the band marketing people are doing things right..... :-) In actual fact the function we were booked for was cancelled but we decided we would still play at the pub anyway. 6 people in the band, max of about 8 people in the bar and by the time we finished there were 2 plus the barman. We played great though and the singers were fantastic. As you can see I took my Series II but it was hard to hear the nuances I was trying to get with it being such a small room with low ceiling. Great fun though. Love that bass It doesn't have a name yet but at the moment I call it the white bass as that way my girlfriend knows which one I am using. Actually Ive started asking her, which bass should I take to particular gigs and she chose this one for this gig. Fortunate as that was the one I had planned to take. Jazzyvee |

Jazzy, It's interesting to hear your comment about your girlfriend. When I was gigging a lot more i would ask my girlfriend (now wife) the same thing, or even how she thought my tone sounded on a particular song / night. She was always brutally honest . . . I think that's why I married her. Your picture makes it look like it was an enjoyable intimate, albeit cancelled gig. :-D |

Sometimes those gigs can be great. Some of the best shows I've played have been to less than 10 people (it's especially weird if you've just come from a festival playing for 10,000!). OTOH, sometimes they are just barely paid rehearsals. In any case, I wish I could have been there. |

Looking forward to another festival gig this weekend with Musical Youth. It's called Camp Bestival taking place at Lulworth Castle in Dorset, England. I've been told we are on-stage at 01:00 Monday morning so not sure if that means we are closing the festival as the headline band or there is stuff going on afterwards. Anyway here is a link to it. If you are heading out there give me a shout via email and we may be able to hook up. http://www.campbestival.net/line-up/2013-line-up/musical-youth/ Jazzyvee |

Ahaa the on-stage time has now been properly confirmed we are on at 00:15 till 01:00 on Sunday morning. So we are the last band on-stage from the Saturday night sessions then there is a silent disco. If we do well at these next three festivals it could put us in good stead for some bigger festivals next year. Hopefully some international festivals and touring. Last night I put some new strings on the black Europa/Elan 5 and it sounds great. I've kept the old strings on for ages since I'd been checking out the idea that older strings should give me a more mellow tone for reggae but I actually prefer the tone that I get from having new strings then filtering out the top end rather than having dull strings and trying to get a decent sound. Well that works at home so the gig will tell me what works best on-stage. I've tried some D'darrio EXL170-5 Nickel wound 45 - 130 strings this time instead of RCocco which I've used for a while now. First thoughts are they feel less abrasive to the touch and hence less finger noise. Jazzyvee (Message edited by jazzyvee on August 02, 2013) |

Thanks Jacko I fiddled with it in iPhoto. The amp again was a dreadful sounding Ampeg head and 4x10 cab. I have no idea what model it is but it looked old but then it could be a retro model for all I know. I always had the view that they made good stuff but i seem to get the duff ones where a backline is provided. Ok just had a look on-line and I think the head is this one. http://cdn1.gbase.com/usercontent/gear/3017385/p1_udwknfpbd_so.jpg So it could be a "newer" retro model or an original either way it sucked so bad even the keyboard player commented. If you can recommend a better head then I may be able to ask for that model for on-stage use. My Boogie walkabout should be back from repair this weekend so I may just take that to gigs where a backline is supposed to be provided and at least hope I get a decent cab. That's funny that you disliked the head so much...since that's the head I use and always love the Alembic through it. The head is all tube, and requires a 4-ohm or 2-ohm load, and I'm guessing the 410 cab was probably 8-ohms, so it probably was kind of anemic sounding. You should have plugged into my amp when you were at the Gathering in Canyon to get a better reference for an Ampeg. Ken (TEO) |

Hi Ken, Yeah it was just weak. I have really no familiarity with any bass rigs other than my own Mesa rig or my f1-x based rack system. I don't think ampeg is bad I just think the rigs have been badly used and maintained. Carrying my own gear to festivals is not generally practical due to short turnaround times between bands. We have another festival in a couple of weeks so hope I get a good cab cos I plan to take my Mesa walkabout head. Jazzyvee |

Gig went well but again had bad on-stage sound from an ampeg 4x10 cab. I used my own Mesa Walkabout head this time but the cab was still distorting at moderate volume so the problem must be there. The stage hands weren't very interested because as they said "Other bands had been using the rig earlier and had no problems". Well that may have been the case but as I said to them, in my view, you can get away with some distortion within that genre but in reggae where the sound of the bass is king, it's not a benefit at all. I had a bad Ampeg backline cab experience this weekend, too. Wooly mids and no high end definition at all. But, I could feel the front of house enough to know it wasn't a problem. |

I had a gig last night with one of the bands I'm in called Elizabeth Fields Collective. We played a really old small jazz club in Bilston, Wolverhampton, (Incidently it's only about a mile from the "Robin 2 R&B Club" I saw Jimmy Johnson play with Allan Holdsworth a few years ago). Anyway the gig went well and it was i think the second time I'd played my Black Europa on a non reggae gig so it was a welcome surprise to hear how well the full range of the bass sounds with the mids and highs in the mix. Just got a message to say we have a gig (Musical Youth) at the Jazz Cafe in London on January 26th 2014. Will post more details closer to the date but It will be cool to be on the same stage that I saw Clarkee perform on and also to be playing with an alembic bass. :-) http://mamacolive.com/thejazzcafe/listings/upcoming-events/9380/musical-youth-pass-the-dutchie/ Jazzyvee |

Now that really is cool V. I've only been to 2 gigs in london and both were at the jazz cafe. Clarke (when we met) and marcus Miller. it's a fine little venue Graeme |

It is a good venue however if you are downstairs and at the back it's pretty hard to see anything from the neck down. I went to see clarkee maybe the year before we met up there and two people whom I went with were under 5'6 and hardly saw anything so they left after about half the gig. Jazzyvee |

True enough. Mike and I were around 7th in the queue so we were able to get right up against the front of the stage which was an incredible place to see stan play as the stage is only about 2 feet high. Graeme |

Going back to the problem with the Ampeg rig. I was at a rehearsal room on Saturday and they had the same bass head but plugged into an Ampeg 8x10 speaker cabinet. I used my maple Europa 5 and it sounded warmer than the sound I get with my mesa rig but still fantastic!!!! At least now I know that they backline company have been providing shoddy gear rather than ampet lacking in sound. Jazzvee (Message edited by jazzyvee on October 16, 2013) |

My next gig is billed as Dreadbeat & Jazz. I'm doing some Jazzed up Bob Marley covers, Ernest Ranglin, Monty Alexander tracks and Silver Rain by Marcus Miller. The idea is to keep the reggae feel in the drum and bass and leave the keyboard player and guitarist to deal with the Jazzier elements in the music. We've had a couple of rehearsals so far and it's gone well. However just today I got a call from my drummer saying he can't now make the gig as he will be working away from the city and too far to get back for the gig. So now I'm getting a list of drummers to call. Hey ho that's life. :-) Jazzyvee |

Good luck with your drummer search! Hopefully you will find one soon who can get the songs down quickly. |

I've got the drummer and the keyboard player from the Aynsley Lister band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdPEOSEg62E Both are awesome players that I've known and played with in other bands for a number of years. Got a rehearsal Sunday, gig is on Thursday. Jazzyvee (Message edited by jazzyvee on November 15, 2013) |
