I have my first gig of the year coming up on Saturday at the Jazz Cafe in London. Here is a photo from a full stage rehearsal we had on Thursday evening. I tried out my Series II to decide if it was going to be the bass for the gig. I'm still undecided.

Hey guys it was a great gig last night to a great audience. Here are a couple of Youtube clips posted already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvWzBbyiVe8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkT2s8GMYmA Series II bass was seriously putting out some superb bass and rocking the place with authority last night even I was happy with my sound. :-) Yep Charles you were right. Last year I had so many rubbish bass rigs it was good to get one that I could get a good sound out of. Also the first reggae gig I've added some of the SF-2 into the mix. Not because I needed to but: a) I was able to without damaging the cab. b) I was showing the keyboard player, who is also a bass player what it does and he insisted I use it. c) the sound engineer looked and smiled when i added it to the mix. Job Done. Here are the settings I used.
Note the QSC Channel 2 is on full. I think I read here somewhere that this the best way to run the power amp as it's not louder at that setting, just more sensitive. It was still extremely quiet noise wise at that setting. :-) and I've found that the sound is more meat even at lower volumes of the bass. Jazzyvee |

http://soundcloud.com/phoebe-yu-2/musical-youth-jazz-cafe Here is an audio recording of the full gig. I think it was recorded on a video camera by the lady who interviewed the two original band members. I'm not sure how good the sound quality is as I've listened to only a few bits on my iPad. Enjoy. I hope Jazzyvee |

Series II. There is no substitute. "Throbbing Gristle" comes to mind in trying to describe the sound. [To coin a phrase (right?)] To be clear, I am Not referring to the band. |

Just in the van on the way back from my gig last night in with Musical Youth at the watering hole in perranporth, Cornwall. We played another excellent set. The venue was jam packed ,it had a low ceiling lots of wood in the construction so the sound was mellow and solid just right for reggae. My maple Europa 5 came into its own last night I know I've said this many times but it's an absolutely awesome bass for reggae!!!! Jazzyvee |

A couple of pics from tonights gig. Quailty is not that great as there were these chemical fog machines blasting their stuff all over the place. As you can see behind me in the bottom picture, the back line provided me with my least favourite bass cab.... ASHDOWN!!!! grrrrrr. I took my boogie walkabout head as we were travelling light today and was greeted with that cab. During soundcheck I did open up the filters to hear how well the cab worked with the higher frequencies and it just sounded.....well...... unpleasant. Initially I had the master on my head set about the 10 o'clock position and the input gain set at 9 o'clock and even with the volume on my bass set just below half way the cab was complaining about the bottom end so I had to turn the gain down low and get more bass signal sent to the monitors. How can anyone use these cabs is it just me, have I been just very unlucky, or are they really that dreadful.

Yeah that is on the stage plan that we send to the venues, but many of the venues we play at have ashdown heads and cabs or combos. I think they must be relatively cheap. Ideally I'd prefer to take my own gear all the time but that isn't always a practical option. Maybe this is the year to take a leaf out of JJ's book and go DI for all gigs and use a stage monitor to hear myself. Jazzyvee |

Have you thought about getting a small combo amp you can carry yourself to all your gigs? I use a Fender Rumble 350 that is 350 watts into 2X10's. It sounds great & can easily fit into the trunk or back seat of most cars. I have even used mine at outdoor gigs & it was plenty loud. I tilt mine back on a stand like a floor monitor & face it backwards away from the front so the soundman has more control. Even tilted back it has great bottom end & handles my 5 string very well. I made a platform to sit my rack on with blocks on top to keep the rack from sliding off when it is tilted back. So I use my SF-2 with the combo & it sounds great!
http://www.fender.com/series/rumble/rumble-350-350-watt-bass-combo-2x10-speakers-and-horn-120v/ Guitar Center has them for $350 now. |

Hmm i doubt it somehow unless it was something like an 8x10. The ones I've tried so far have not impressed me. If I used the SF-2 I'd mainly want it for more bottom end focus and that would fry an Ashdown cab. jazzyvee |

Perhaps, but it's worth a try. I use my SF-2 to get more bottom end from my Fender Rumble 350 combo, but I don't use it so much as a "boost" to the bottom end where it could overdrive the speakers. I set it for low pass & turn the frequency knob to tune the speaker response for the room I'm playing. Once I find the frequency that enhances the punch on the bottom end then I adjust the Threshold to "fatten" up the low end. By doing that I can actually turn the amp down more & still get great bottom end that is both full & punchy without pushing the speakers too hard. |

Let's hope you get a decent rig this time V. I've had problems with Ashdown before too. I think the problem is that the company was founded by the guys that sold Trace elliot to Gibson and they basically built Ashdown to sound like Trace. All very well if you want to sound like Mark King but seriously lacking in tonal variation, especially in the bottom end. I sold my Trace because it didn't handle the low B string, and started carrying an eden 300 watt 210 combo into the venues where I knew they'd be providing an Ashdown setup. At least that way I could take the dreaded ABM head out of the equation and just use the supplied ashdown 410 as an extension cabinet. Looks like a fun line up. Toyah and Aswad too :-) graeme |

All the butlins places have ashdown gear except bognor regis which does not have any backline amps. So yeah I think I will do just that, take my walkabout head and 1x15 powerhouse and like you suggest, use the ashdown as an extension cab. (if it sounds any good) Jazzyvee |

As it happens we were headlining last night and didn't see Aswad or toyah. They may be booked for different days though. Would you believe my Mesa walkabout went crazy last night with some high pitched squeals coming out of the di port but the regular output to my speaker was fine. So to be safe we changed to the ashdown rig between numbers. Seems like it's gonna have to go for a checkup at a service centre. Jazzyvee |

My next gig is 15/07/2014 at the Jam House in Birmingham with my NotStrictlyJazz Quartet. http://www.thsh.co.uk/event/jazzlines-free-gigs-delano-mills-and-not-strictly-/ It's a mix of Stanley Clarke, Grover Washington Jr, Jeff Lorber, Victor Bailey, Crusaders, Gabriela Anders, Marcus Miller. The venue is one if the nicest places to play in the city for medium sized gigs so i'm looking forward to a good gig and hopefully a good turn out as well. I plan to use my Series II bass for this gig so I've been working hard on learning to make silent tone changes between numbers as most of the tracks need different bass sounds and generally the bass parts are moving too fast to adjust on the fly and stay in the groove. |

Make it a good one V. I used to play the Jam house in Edinburgh with Big Tuna. A nice venue that used to be the BBC scotland studio where they'd record orchestras. I believe Jools Holland started the franchise. No idea if he's still involved. Graeme |

I don't know if he is still involved with the place. I had heard he did one gig a year at the one in brum but I've never seen him listed. Hi Pierreyves, I do play maybe a couple of gigs a month on average which are reggae so I only use a small part of the bass sound. This gig will allow me to use more of the bass's capability tonally. So I'm really looking forward to it. |

Sound check had gone ok. The sound engineer came down to ask me about my bass. He said they never get basses like that here said even my case probably costs more than the other basses we see here. But he loves the sound of it. Hope that transpires into a great gig sound. He asked how much i paid so i referered him to the quote generator. I think his jaw is still on the floor as we speak. I will post some gig photos later. Jazzyvee |

What can I say, tonight was the best I've heard from my Series II bass since I bought it. My own cabs and my own amplifier rack setup. Sounded beautiful I had no end of compliments about the gig, the sound and my bass. Even the sound engineer came down after the gig and told me he has never heard a bass sound that clear and powerful. Lots of bottom mids and clean top and no harshness at all. Even from where I was on stage the sound from it was massive. I was having trouble believing It was me making all that sound. I believe those guys at alembic know a thing or two about making great basses. :-) Jazzyvee |

Absolutely. This gig had a variety of bass tones in the set list that included covers by Stanley, Marcus, Victor Bailey and others but all the tracks required a different sound and I was able to find them quickly without much problem so I think I'm getting the hang of the filters and volume relationships now. I had one situation in School days when I accidentally hit the master volume while performing one of Stanley Clarkes flamenco type strums on my bass and blasted the place with sound. However I was fortunate not to blow my cab as the volume on my QSC was at max!!!! Anyway here is a snapshot from the gig. We were playing a song called I'll be loving you by an argentinian singer called Gabriella Anders. The singer we used for that song is from Hungary. |

Rusty, i think ashdown is going to follow me like a stray dog for years to come. I have a rehearsal with musical youth tonight at a music college here and they have all ashdown bass gear, two festivals at the weekend where at least one will definitely have ashdown gear because the college provides their facilities. I'm gonna carry my F1-x so I can at least control what goes out to the p.a. |

Well let's hope when the band's album is released it makes enough of a splash that we get to choose what back line we want. However there is some light on the horizon. For Sunday's festival Steel Pulse are headlining so I get to use the back line that they have specified for the gig. That means a couple of Eden WT800 world series amps and eden cabs. Not sure why they are using two amps. I know the bass player is a Carvin bass endorsee but I don't know if his bass has stereo output. |

I had a gig last night with musical youth at an ultimate 80's weekender on the south coast near London. As the venue does not have a backing bass rig I decided to go "commando" or "au naturelle" and go direct into the pa via a DI box and just use on stage monitor like JJ has discussed a number of times here. What a revelation. When the stage monitors were off I could for the first time hear my bass completely from the FOH and it was awesome!! The on stage sound was ok through the monitors but not as good as a bass rig. There was enough spill from FOH subs under the stage to feel the righteous bass. I had so much praise from the band, and they are not known for idle praises, about my sound and also from the band waiting to follow us on stage. Their bass player in particular loves the sound of my bass. I have a bass rig for tonight's gig at another Ultimate 80's gig in Skegness up in the north east side of the country. |

Black Signature Europa maple 5 string bass for both gigs. I have a theatre gig coming up in a couple of weeks and may take a series bass with me for that one. Gonna try to find out in advance what the bass rig is. http://www.alban-arena.co.uk/events/reggae-sun-ska-boogie-night/ Reggae Sun Ska-Boogie Night! Too much choice can be a bad thing sometimes. I've decided that the black bass is my first call bass for reggae but if I do a high profile reggae gig at a proper theatre, showcase a well known venue or even TV etc , I will take a series bass. I'm pretty confident your series 2 will become your first call bass. But you will realise pretty soon that short scale bass has a sweetness all of its own and has a tone that you can't get from a 34 scale series or otherwise. I'm with you on that Jazzyvee, I'm worried about having just 2 choices! I agree that my new Europa will most likely become my #1, but I don't ever want to give up my Stanley! |

Great! A really good friend of mine George Howard, was mentored by Grover. George lived on the 52nd block of Catharine and I lived on the 55th block & I remember one summer night walking past George's home and he called me saying "hey, Chalie come here man, I want you to hear something" George played 3-4 cuts off of his 1st album on his cassette player before the album was released. Needless to say his career took off! Sadly,Like Grover, George died of cancer about 16-17 years ago. Anyway good luck on the Gig!! I do believe that another buddy of mine bassist Gerald Veasley performed with Grover as well. I'm sad I didn't jam with Grover |

Grover's music was introduced to me by the sax player from a band I was in during the late 70's. He was really good player and was into the Live at the Bijou album at the time and could virtually play it note perfect and used lots of guitar effects on his sax. Not long after that I heard the Mister Magic album and that totally blew me away. Unfortunately I've never seen Grover live but to me he had the right mix of Jazz funk, smooth but not sickly smooth and those funky grooves are awesome. The Winelight album was the icing on the cake and certainly this side of the pond, it was at the time "the album" to have in your collection. I was actually on holiday in Florida when it came over the news that he had died. 10 years later I decided to put on a tribute gig here in my city and it went down a storm, we packed the venue out and since then there have always been some of his tracks in my jazzier set lists. 15 years on, it's time to do it again so I've organised it with one of the performing arts colleges and will be using their main auditorium for this gig. The risk is on me this time as promoter, I'm paying up-front so I need to sell loads of tickets to fill the place so if you know any UK fans and can point them in the direction of the gig that would be cool. From the first rehearsal we had last week without the sax player, ( who is on tour in China), It promises to be a great pre-Christmas night whatever the footfall is as we are gonna have a fantastic time recreating this music. I'm inviting some agents and promoters to see if we can take the show to some other venues in the UK next year and if we could get some international opportunities that would be superb. |

One of the first music videotapes I´ve ever had was Grover´s music video from about the "Winelight" time... where he plays with Gadd, anthony Kackson, the late, wonderful Richard Tee and Eric Gale. It is still one of my big time faves! |

I've done a short promo video edit of the live footage just for us to send round to venues in the hope of getting some gigs out of the set in 2015. Here is a link to it on you tube. http://youtu.be/o3DD0UbiRrY I have not edited the audio on this footage. It is the feed from the live FOH desk recorded onto the video at the time of shooting. For the keen eyed amongst you. I am playing my series I & Series II basses. I did not change the EQ on my rig so you should be able to hear the difference in sound from the two basses. |

And last, but not least (And not Grover Washington´s, but equally welcome): What is Hip?. Awesome! That bass is certainly gorgeous looking. I wonder who might have build it that way... ;) |

Great video! I have to say that the S II sounded a bit punchier to me. I liked it better, but maybe that's because it was also a little louder in the mix. Nice thumb playing! I bet you'll get some gigs out of it. |

Edwin you are right the S II is a punchier sounding bass with a crisper tone. The S I is heavier on the bottom end and overall warmer sounding so on this gig i used it mainly on the tracks that were from the 1970's. |

I agree with Edwin, they both sounded great, but I liked the SII sound better. It was very full & clear. Great playing too! |

Groovy! You should be very happy with your sound person. I noticed that when you went to your thumb that the bass drops down in the mix abit. Same thing happens with me . . . Curious as to why that happens; is it because the string is vibrating in a more perpendicular path in relation to the pickup's face? |

Interesting thought, On those tracks I don't let the slapped or popped notes sustain maybe that's got something to do with it. Maybe that's why a lot of players who use slap a lot have a compressor limiter somewhere in the signal chain to even out their level. |

I noticed that difference, as well. My experience that the volume change between finger style and slap often comes down to technique. About 25 years ago, I spent a lot of time with my 4 track cassette machine and I worked very hard on getting consistent levels regardless of style of playing. It paid off because I rarely need a compressor. However, other factors can come into play, such as tone settings, strings, etc. Unless you really like the tone that a compressor provides (which is a completely valid choice as it can sound very cool), I don't think it's the way to go. It's very much worth it to work out getting it all consistent because then you can switch back and forth for a few notes at a time and not have it sound weird. Eventually it becomes second nature. Of course, it's been a very long time since I did much slapping.... :-) Sometimes pickup design can affect the volume discrepancies between finger and slap styles, but I have never had that issue with Alembic pickups. |
