A progressive rock group 'Advent' picked me up over year ago as a nice unexpected surprise. Coming from a jazz and fusion background primarily of late, this was an interesting change of pace and one that requires lots of reading and counting (lol).

As such they just released their 3rd album which I performed on using a few basses. I recorded direct from an SF-2 and F1-X. There are a few tunes I use a Spoiler 5 as well as an FBass fretless 5, and a Carl Thompson freted 5 with passive electronics. The Carl Thompson 5 I used on my favorite track of the lot, Voices from California: http://advent-prog.bandcamp.com/track/voices-from-california

-Note this tunes kicks in about 52 seconds along but the intro does set up the tune pretty well.

To Dunsinane, http://advent-prog.bandcamp.com/track/to-dunsinane is a track I use a Spoiler 5 on. Same note as above, 1min & 12secs pass before it kicks in.

I like this music . I admire the the fine singing but am also impressed by the orchestrational arrangement and of course your clean precise bass playing on these tunes .

I am digging this! I've always been a fan of progressive rock, always wondered if I played in a band that used odd time signatures a lot if I would have to count or could get away with just feeling it...

The production is great! Looks like there are some veteran musicians in the group?

Hey Harry, Thanks for checking it out and the positive feedback. Veteran musicians? Three of the six have been around for a while making some interestingly unique progressive rock let's say, lol. There are profound shades of classic Gentle Giant, Procol Harum, and some medieval English church music happening.

In terms of writing and performing lots of odd meters in any given tune, you could get away with feeling it but it would be more labor intensive I think rather than reading and writing things down (for easier recall). At the end of the day it does need to be felt however leading into tricky sections have to be counted. So for those tricky parts I would suggest counting things out during those entire sections. Actually always be counting regardless. The other thing is the kind of feel you are playing against, if it is groove oriented then it can be easier to play be feel however if it is an orchestral score feel with lots of breaks it is more challenging.
