My Spoiler and I will be playing for the Buffalo Community Theatre production of "Nunsense" Nov 9-13 in Buffalo, MN. I am again threatening to use the Ashbory.

The last time I played this show, they put the orchestra in black shirts & clerical collars. I added hawaiin shirts for everyone. We were radical priests on vacation. The show was held at a hotel, and we spent time before the show and intermission in the bar. Many questions were asked.

This time they are threatening to put us in monks' robes. Can you even play drums in a robe?

I'm bringing my light sabre.

btw, post #100!

(loopy from lack of sleep: saw Sir Paul last night. Bed at 1:30, up at 4:45).

Nunsense is a great show, and I think playing in monk's robes would be awesome. Having a light saber subtly at your side might be fun as well...

Holy crap.

The guy doing sound & lights (volunteer) for the show is David Nordschow, also known as David Eden. I bought him a beer Wednesday night, and I didn't even know who he was.

btw, we've ended up dressed as priests instead of monks, so no light sabres.

Oh, and during the dress rehearsal the cover from one of the work lights, about 2 feet across, came loose from the light and passed within about an inch of my Spoiler. If it would have hit me it probably wouldn't have done serious damage but if it would have hit my Alembic I would have been pissed.

2 shows down, 3 to go.

So how is that David Nordschow ended up doing sound and light for the show??? And what kind of rig were you playing through at the time he was there? And did you think to ask if he might have something sitting around the house that you could play through <g>!

David's wife was in the show.

I was playing through a Behringer V-Amp Pro, my SF-2, and an Alto power amp all into my home brew EV 2 x 10" cab (David commented "Nice little Thiele box".) I use just my Spoiler for the show, which he also commented on.

He's asked me to come by the factory today to try out a new prototype system along with a few other players. The weather here is going to get ugly so that might be postponed.

It has just gotten stranger. I can't tell the entire story until at least tomorrow, but it started out with David N. and Montrose, today added Setzer and Hatton into the mix, and should conclude tomorrow adding in the State and Setzer.

Sorry to be cryptic, but this is an in-process thing, and obvious publicity could mess it up.

Montrose? I haven't heard that name in a long time. Of course it could be that I'm out of touch.

What a weird day.

So I meet David Nordschow (aka David Eden) while playing for community theatre in Buffalo, MN. Great guy. As we’re striking the show he asks me if I’d like to come out to the factory in Montrose to play with a prototype amp. Sounds like fun! We set it up for Tuesday after work.

Tuesday morning my wife is at the Target Corp HQ. She’s consulting on recipes for the Super Target delis and the web site. She tells me that the Brian Setzer Orchestra is going to a 30 minute concert for Target employees. Target is the lone distributor for Setzer’s new Christmas CD “Dig That Crazy Christmas”. He’s also starting a tour the next day at the State Theatre in Minneapolis. I go over to Target’s HQ and the band is great. Really tight.

I get the idea to take the bass player out to the Eden factory that evening. I talk to him after the show, find out his name (John Hatten), he thinks it’s a great idea. I call out to Eden to make sure it’s cool. John brings his upright, which has two pickups (bridge and under the fingerboard for slap) and a stereo output jack. He says he’ll need a stereo guitar cable split out to two mono signals to make this work. Normally I’d suggest that we run out to guitar center on our way to the factory, but time is tight, I have some work I actually have to accomplish before I can leave for the day, and I carpool. (Explaining to my boss why I was leaving early for the 3rd day in a row was also interesting. “You’re going where with who? To demo what?”) So while my wife is loading John’s upright into her car (we’ll swap vehicles later) I’m running to radio shack to try an build a cable (Headphone extension cable à mail ¼” stereo to 2 x female RCA mono adapter à 2 x RCA to RCA à RCA to ¼” male, a total of about $30).

I pick up John, drop off my car pool partner, and we arrive @ Eden about 5:00. I introduce John to Mr. Nordschow. He introduces us to Lane Baldwin (laneonbass.com) and David Grout, who is a designer for Eden, and a rocket scientist. Really. He used to work for NASA.

We go into the back where we’re shown the prototype amp. I apologize for not remembering what the model is. I dubbed it the Lease Breaker 3000, because you’re landlord will kick you out if you buy this amp, but that’s probably fine because you may not have any money left for rent. This amp is a 2-channel beast, about 1300 watts, running into a 6 x 10 cabinet. We hook John’s bass up (2 channels here was really nice) and they played with the controls until he had his tone dialed in. Then they turned it up. Those 6 10s can really move some air!

After a bit I plugged my Alembic in and proceeded to embarrass myself. Lane tried out my Alembic (as did John), then got out his 6-string Spectre. What a loud bass!! (Lane said, “This one goes to 12”). We could not make that amp clip, and we really tried.

John then picked up a small combo amp to take home with him. We went to load gear and discovered 2” of snow on the truck.

We drove back to Minneapolis where John bought me dinner and arranged tickets to the show for my wife & me. The show was incredible, and we got to go backstage after the show for a few beers and schmoozed with the band. Brian came out just as we were leaving. I left John with some little airplane bottles of the Bushmills Millennium malt to be shared with Brian.

My coworkers are pissed that I didn’t get them tickets to the show. Donuts will have to suffice.

Michael,
That's one heck of a day...I didn't get to go to the show either- feel free to send me a donut (glazed twist or a sprinkled one) =)

Apart from embarassing yourself (highly doubtful), how did the Alembic sound with that amp/cab setup?

BTW: Due to the HIGH cost of cabs and amps here in NZ, I am going to be purchasing gear in the states and bringing it back home in an attempt to frankenstein my own cab....do you have any pics of that "home brew 2x 10"? I'm struggling on trying to decide which way (15" v 12"/10") to go with my design. Any impressions you have of your own cab and logic behind your choices would be greatly appreciated-

Toby:

I will get you pics and also measurements if desired.

The cab sounds pretty even & tight to me, but I am not esp. picky I think it sounds best when paired with one of my 1 x 15 EVL cabs. I can't remember if I used 250 or 500 Hz as a x-over point. That particular rig has been disassembled ever since it was deemed too ugly to use at church.

btw, since visiting the Eden plant I will no longer contend that I have the best bass amp in Wright county.

Michael,
Any info & logic/opinion behind your choices would be MUCH appreciated. I've got a list of possible speakers as long as your arm....15's 12's 10's- ported- sealed....the list goes on. I am walking proof of the saying "a little knowledge is dangerous." Seems like the more I learn, the harder it is to decide. =)

I wonder how many on this site play homemade cabs....
