Arrgh! (in my best Charlie Brown voice) After the 15th, I'm pretty much open (one guitarist and our sound guy are out fishing) Weekends in there are 16th & 17th, 23rd & 24th, or 30th & 31st. I'll ramp up a search for a venue if the mothership is represented. I'm mostly a western suburban dude, and don't have direct links downtown, but I can ask around. I'm in..I'm in the Fox Lake area. May I suggest looking for something around the O'hare field area..most major highways nearby and the airport itself..plus tons of resturants and hotels. And for those interested, theres a Texas Guitar show in town May 16 & 17 http://www.texasguitarshows.com/NewChiMay.htm. Gary |

Bag End whould be amazing hosts! They are about 30 miles / 45 minute NW of O'Hare airport. For out of town guests, there are a lot of hotels in the Hoffman Estates / Schaumburg area just south of Barrington. And Olie, "friends from the south" are ALWAYS welcome! |

Well if you can do the 30th I should be able to make it. My in-laws are going to be out of town May 20th until the 27th so we would not be able to make a May 23rd date. Barrington isn't that far from St. Charles so it's a great location for me. Also it being at Bag End might give me a chance to put a face to a couple of the folks I've talked to over the years. FYI since I will be flying I will not be bringing my basses. Keith |

I hope this turns out like the gatherings that Will has hosted in the Bay Area. Lots of folks show up with their various Alembic basses and guitars, there's talking and playing and jamming. We've got some snacks to sustain us through the fun. My dad will likely be there too, and he brings a small stash of repair parts, so he's able to do some onsite servicing if there's anything with an ailment. These have been tons of fun! As the date gets closer, I'll setup a mailing list for the attendees. If you're planning on coming, just send me a message with "Chicago Gathering" in the subject line and I'll add you to the list. |

In response to popular request, I will bring the 36" five string with three ebony lams (SII electronics). I think it has well over TEN FEET of ebony lams (when you consider the full length). Lift your weights everyone. And, of course, the new QCB. And, even though it won't win the Earliest Piece Award (Keavin, hope you really are coming), there is some serious karma in 74-59. Only question I have is--if we're honoring Brother Paul, what are we drinking? dw |

Hey Roger, I'm willing to bet Andrew won't really want to drum for 6 hours (Duh!), so alternate stick-twiddlers will be an option. I just don't know how much space/ time/ talent we've got coming. How big is our guest list? I've also got interest from Noah G and Gary B as well in attending... Mike |

I know Mica is keeping the list, but my read of the buzz is that we'll have a big turnout. While I know the jamming is only one aspect of the fest, it would be good to know how many non-bassists we have, so that we can make sure the music works. Couple (or more) drummers would be good, as would having enough guitarists to make a lot of music. dw |

It looks like there will be quite a contingent of out of town folks. I'm still looking for a show to go to. The Eldar Trio is at the Jazz Showcase May 28 - 30th so I might try to get tickets to that. I also noticed that Spinal Tap is playing the Chicago Theatre on the 30th so I might pick up tickets for that if nothing else pans out. And Mike still waiting to hear if you schedule anything with Noah between May 23-30. Keith (Message edited by keith_h on April 03, 2009) |

All Noah has booked is a solo acoustic set on the 23rd at Chord On Blues in St. Charles, opening for "Backyard Tire Fire", and two acoustic duet shows with another singer-songwriter named Mer: May 29th at Curly's in Glen Ellyn and May 30th at Flip Flops in Carol Stream. Now I don't mean to stereotype all Alembic owners as a bunch of pot smoking, peace loving, hippie Deadheads (ha ha ha ha ha). BUT...just in case some Grateful Dead tunes wind up getting played at the upcoming Chicago gathering, I want to be able to join in! Can anyone point me to some good tab books. I can't seem to find a decent one anywhere. I have to admit that I never listened to the Dead much. But I just pulled out an old 3 CD set from the Filmore East 1971 and I'm having a lot of fun trying to play along. As for Jerry's style, a lot of the solos seem to be major chromatic stuff. Is this right? I'm not used to that so maybe a book that goes into the basis of his style a bit would help. |

A 12 bar blues pattern played at various tempos can always open itself up to some great improvisation. Another fun trick is to have someone (like the drummer!)call out a key and then let the drummer (intentionally) change tempos through out the jam. Doing this can help prevent the jam from becoming boring. |

Now does anyone know if location is confirmed and how far is it from Chicago airport to the location. I hope to see you all there, I am really trying to make this date to meet and talk with everyone. The location is confirmed. Information I've seen indicates that it's 27.3 miles and 42 minutes from O'Hare. |

Thanks Olie and Keith, I just did a Map Quest on it and it'll take me about 11 hrs to get there by car. The problem for me is I'm playing the 29th 7-10pm. I would have to literally pack my gear after the gig and get on the road there which leaves little time to sleep. I'm not sure if my boss (wife)would like that idea. and I really want to bring my Distillate too and the thought of putting it on a plane (gulp) with the way airlines help treats personal things (dbl gulp!)Hmmm... what's a poor bassist like moi to do?!!! If my wife does not want to go maybe I'll get round trip tickets for two (1 seat for my bass). |

Hey Gary, I forgot to mention that I have been a Bag End man for over 10 years now. To see my rig go to Showcase then Distillate, then look up Chalie's Distillate. The top two are for my Double Bass and the Bottom two are for my Alembic! I have been in contact with Craig Lockwood from Bag End from time to time and he has been outstanding in providing information and parts! Peace! Low Frequency Low Frenquency Freak! Chalie |

Gary, Bag End will have a complete PA in service, and there's a compassionate drummer joining us with his kit, so a full jam experience is possible. There will even be vocal mics for those with pipes. Dave, do bring your Alemric! And wouldn't it be grand if somehow Christian could join us? Anyone else that wants the attendee information should email me at the address in my profile. |

OK I got everything taken care of, So I will be there, got a room at the Days Inn closest to site. I may not get to the function till 1130ish give or take, due to my best flight connect was going to Midway Airport where I will arrive in Chicago around 930am pickup my rental and drive an hour to the Gathering, so if traffic is bad I should be no later than 12 noon. I really am looking forward to meeting everyone and I am thankful for Alembic and Mica for putting it together. I can already hear the rolls of thunder in the distance from the storm thats Blowing into Barrington. better to say blowing or Brewing I prefer to say Brew and Cold one myself. See you guys there! "I wouldn't take a taxi to Barrington, probably better off with rental." More likely the taxi wouldn't take you - they don't like fares from ORD to anywhere but downtown, and will at least charge a premium for a suburban destination. At least that's what happened to me last time. Peter |

Olie (and other interested parties): Here is my recipe for flying with an instrument. YMMV. I have a Calton case for Woody, so if going in the cargo hold is in the cards, I needn't worry. The "just bring a gig bag and hope they let it on" method is too nerve-wracking for me. I try to get to the airport a little early. ALWAYS carry it to the gate, don't check it in with regular baggage. I find there are some planes that will accommodate the case in the overhead, and some that won't. On the latter, there is often a closet for the crew or first class in which an instrument will fit. A sympathetic flight attendant can put it there. I just try and carry the instrument onto the plane until someone tells me I can't. Then I try to sweet talk them into it. If that doesn't work, I gate check the guitar. At least then it doesn't go through the conveyor belts, multiple handlers, and increased chance of loss that most checked luggage endures. Also, at most airports, the gate checked luggage is returned to you as you leave the aircraft instead of going through baggage handler purgatory and winding up on the big merry-go-round. One word of caution: I try to do this only on non-stop flights or, at least, direct flights (with a stop, but the same plane). The thought of checking my guitar and then changing planes mid-trip scares the heck out of me. I've seen that Gator is advertising a new line of ATA approved cases that appear to be lighter than the typical anvil. I have an anvil-type case for my Fernandes/Alembic. It's great for protection, but I can't even pretend to carry it on - just too big. Hope this helps. I'd love to see the new baby in person! This is going to be BIG FUN! Bill, tgo |

Thanks Bill. I did some "checking" and even my gig bag is too large to carry on. One of the down sides of being a bass player I guess. I have a flight case but it weighs a ton. With the bass in it I would be slapped with the "heavy baggage" premium. So as much as I hate it, I'll be childless on this trip. Maybe if I stay on my best behavior and ask REAL nice Mica will let play one of the showroom models. OO |

hehe, Olie, you're trapped ! You just CANNOT make it without the Alpha-Omega, and Mike also has to carry one or two beauties with him. Rumour is that security at Bag End will nobody allow to enter the building without an Alembic, so better carry two or more instruments with you to give also the drummer(s) a chance to be with us have a nice weekend, everybody, your Christian |

...ouch, Bill, I should have known better Well, I am really toying with the idea of taking the double-neck with me, and also the Seismic bass. But that should be posted in the "Dreaming - for now" section of this board at this point in time, I have to talk to the airline if it is possible at all, this tiny little monster plus flight case weighs about 100lbs and is not easy to handle... not at all ! If the doubleneck makes it over the pond, it will definitely get John and me in... sorry, folks, but that's the way it is |

"Locals: I'll be flying in and out of O'Hare. Should I taxi it, or is a rental in order?" If you're staying at a hotel, many of them have airport shuttles. You might take the shuttle to the hotel and then a taxi to the event. And if the hotel is close to the event, one of us locals can probably just run over and get you. |

I have reservations at the Day's Inn four miles from the gathering. Somehow I suspect the suburban Day's Inn doesn't run a late night airport shuttle ("hey Fred, throw some more cheese under the hood to make the hamster run faster on that wheel"). I found a rental for around $50 total. If anyone needs a ride from O'Hare to Barrington at about midnight, Friday night (or a ride back to the airport on Sunday morning) let me know. Bill, tgo |

For those coming in from out of town. If you have the time and are into the museum thing Chicago has several all withing walking distance of each other along the lake shore. I generally park at one of the garages under Grant Park. This would be a must see for you Bill. This is the same park that has the Ulysses Grant statue where the Giant's have been know to paint the horses privates in the team colors. :-) Back to the subject. From Grant Park you can easily walk to the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum. This same location puts you a couple/few of blocks from the Loop and Navy Peer. Walking north up Michigan avenue will take you to Water Tower Place (shopping) and the Gold Coast area. Keith |

All I can tell you is The Onion Pub and Brewery is directly across the street from Bagend. I played there once in 2004 (a smallish bar), their website says nothing about bands or entertainment anymore. For entertainment options, Check out Suburban Nitelife's website Illinois Entertainer's website Chicago Jazz website Chicago Blues clubs Hey Bill, I'm rehrearsing fro an acoustic GD show in June, so I'll have some tunes in that vein together. I can second the Art Institute and Shedd Aquarium. I hit them both (along with a White Sox game and Buddy Guy's Legends club) during a brief visit last July. For the "morning-after-the-night-before", a wonderful mellow thing to do is to take one of the boat architectural tours along the rivers than run through town. Great views, interesting history, you're on the water, and the boat has a bar! (Yes, once again beer worms its way into an Alembic Club thread ... whooda thunk it?) Bill, tgo |

Bill...I'll look into some stuff. Maybe Mike has some suggestions Blues Club-wise. The last time I went to one was medical school about 15 years ago - the Checkerboard Lounge. That was back when it was near the old Robert Taylor homes. I'm pretty sure it's moved since then. Clark Street has a couple good sushi restaurants and a few blues clubs. As far as a Texan's idea of sushi goes...wouldn't that be steak tartar? (Message edited by jalevinemd on May 17, 2009) |

One other thing for folks coming in from out of town. Most of the highways are toll roads and use automated toll booths at the exits so you should keep some change handy. When you are on the toll road you can use automatic or manual lanes to pay. I'm not sure what the tolls are now but they used to run between $0.35 and $0.55 (thirty five to 55 cents). Keith |

Tolls now days are $1 each booth without an I-Pass..and of course it's construction season. For those wanting to go into the city you may want to consider taking a commuter train, they usually have weekend passes for under $10 round trip..parking in the downtown area can get expensive..you can check http://www.metrarail.com/schedule.html for more details Gary |

Just for a little food for thought..I am bringing with me a sketch of the new concept custom design Bass I have been toying with. I say concept because it has a new additional system device involved. Yes it also has a name to go with it, thats all I will say for now but I will be willing to discuss it with any and all members at the Chicago show. After all, got to leave something to talk about. |

Olie, I TOTALLY understand why you aren't bringing yours! I wouldn't even check my Rogues on a plane, let alone a Series instrument. For the same reasons, I'm guessing that Mica probably won't be bringing one either. I was just hoping that somebody that's either local or driving up might be able to bring one. The closest I've come is "playing" a non-functional (dead electronics) Series I. I've never actually seen a Series II in person. |

Yes, a week from tomorrow. My transportation does not involve planes (or trains, for that matter), so I am bringing large heavy instruments, some with four strings and others with five. To address a recent question, two will have SII electronics. To address a question from a ways back, one of those will have more than ten feet of ebony lams. And to address the wife point that has wound its way through these posts, I'll be bringing none, but have been getting requests from my lady friend (and singer) to see what we're all like (she has a thing for bass players, it appears). I mention this in case we might want to have her do vocals on anything that we're playing. If you think that's a possibility, you may want to bring lyrics. Of course, if she comes, there's no obligation on our part to give her a singing opportunity--she'll be happy to do what the other companions are doing, i.e., watch the great gathering. This should be fun. dw |

For the local fellows, anybody would be interested in a Trace Elliot combo ? It's a Series 6 GP12, pre-Gibson. I'll try to attach a pic. I know it's not the nicest thing to do giving the that the host store is Bag End but I'll try to keep it quiet. The amp has been serviced and updated by the TE guys in Sugar Grove. Regarding the after-gathering activities, we should come to some sort of consensus as to what people want to eat and hear. If we have a big enough group, we won't be able to simply walk in and expect to find a table. Regarding blues clubs, I'm really out of my element. As I mentioned, I haven't been to one in nearly 15 years. If people want to go to dinner, we probably should have the restaurant and club be fairly close, so we're not driving all over Chicago on a Saturday night. If people want to be downtown, I guess we could check out Buddy Guy's Legends - don't know if that's too trendy. If we're going to be up in the DePaul/Lincoln Park area, there's also tons of places to eat and there use to be a couple of cool blues places - Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S. I don't know if they're still there or if they are still any good. Perhaps the Bag End guys could offer an opinion. And Mike, if you have any suggestions, please weigh in. |

I checked out Buddy Guy's Legends last July. A cool down home club and bar, not in the least bit upscale or trendy ... dare I say a little funky even? I've heard that Buddy shows up and jams every once in a while, but he was nowhere to be seen the night I was there. Probably just a rumor that makes for good publicity? But as to the question, "what to eat and what to hear", personally, my answer is "food and music". Anything is fine with me as I'm going for the camaraderie (as I expect most everyone is). In that regard, a dinner establishment that isn't too noisy might be preferable so we can hear each other around the table. Bill, tgo |

How about a restaurant in the Barrington area so that those that can't make it downtown can still join for dinner? I'm sure our hosts at Bag End can recommend an appropriate restaurant in the area. We can probably get a head count when we get there and then just call ahead for a reservation. |

12 minutes away there is a place called Durty Nellies Pub in Palatine, IL, Not sure how good the food is maybe Bag end can help, they got 2 bands scheduled for saturday night 6 dollar cover Irish pub, they do cove national acts David allan Coe and Johnny winter are scheduled in June. food is wings, nacho's etc typical pub grub. As far as me goes..It doesn't matter I eat it all pretty much and music well..it's all good..Just don't try to take me to the Opera, blues rock jazz and funk works well for me. |

That sounds like a great idea! A lot more relaxed. Getting downtown and back for those staying up in the Barrington area could be a bit of a pain the ass. Not only that, but for the locals such as myself who will have all their equipment in their cars, there's the issue of what to do with it all once we're downtown. I, for one, would have to go home, drop everything off and then head downtown. I'll spend the entire evening in the friggin' car driving around.Plus it removes any time constraints if we just keep it all local. Durty Nellies gets my vote! |

Here's the link to Durty Nellie's Entertainment page. I'm gonna check the links for this week's acts, as I don't recognize the names. This week I believe is the start of Gospel Fest, next week is BluesFest (only three days this year). Parking downtown is also a source of concern. from west suburban boy Mike |

While visiting with Mike (dadabass2001) this past weekend he mentioned parking prices in Chicago have gone up considerably. Here is a link to parking information in Chicago. If you click on the area you are going to it shows all of the parking garages. If you click on the parking symbol it will show you information about the garage. From cloudy St. Charles, Keith |

can't do big amp rigs, but any of the locals are welcome to use my room at the Day's Inn to lock up their Basses while we are out eating, but you must pick them up when we get back. I just couldn't get a good night's sleep knowing that I was in the Alembic Brothel and couldn't touch a single one! |

Durty Nelies is a nice venue..I've seen a bunch of acts there. The mezzanine is best in my opinion..they serve food (pub grub) and has its own bar..what more could you want. They also have a good sound system and the view from upstairs is good. Oh, and its own bathrooms. And..they take reservations..just need a head count. There is also a public parking area directly behind it thats free after 6 or 7 pm. The bottom picture Olie sent is a great viewing area. But no Bill, they do not have a seperate dining area..although they do have 2 'beer gardens'. Hope that helps. Gary |

Guys...In addition to pizza, I will be bringing the following: 1. Guitar Stands (10 or so) 2. Extra straps 3. Extra cables 4. Extra strings (sorry, guitar only) 5. Extra batteries If any travelers need anything, let me know. As I mentioned to Bill, I've got a lot of pedals if people are leaving theirs at home. If anyone's ever been interested in trying a POD XT Live, I can bring that along. If there's a particular pedal you've wanted to try and I have, I'll bring it as well. |

Jonathan, I use the Basspod XT Live. I like the chorus and auto-wha feature on it. Not sure if the guitar Pod uses the same chorus and wah but it might be cool to try on a bass. If you don't mind that is. OO Did someone say PIZZA!!!! |

As for the Pizza, Ollie...it's Giordano's. Classic Chicago deep dish. I'm having them deliver 1/3 cheese, 1/3 veggie and 1/3 meat. That should cover most religious/dietary restrictions. For those who are lactose intolerant...I'm sorry. I tried my best! |

OOH Dave, I'll be honored to meet you. I hope you have a safe and uneventful drive up. See you Saturday, (If not sooner) wail! I don't own a camera. But I will be bring my ubiquitous Edirol R-1 stereo recorder. So, who's making the reservation at Durty Nellies, and for how many? Their site says a $6 cover for Saturday. It's 9.9 miles from BagEnd To DNs, according to Google maps. I might want to take my basses home and come back up, if we're all gonna try to hang for the bands... Mike |

If all are in favor for Durty Neillies then maybe set a reservation for 6pm or 6:30pm even if some come at 7:00 we will make sure a couple of us are there to hold it till everyone arrives, that gives us about 3 to 4 hours to talk in Bass Clef until things start to get a little noisy, then it's stay and listen to the music a bit or move the party and Crash the Day's Inn. So if we are settled on this location by Majority than let's get a head count and I can call in the reservation, so just post your name and how many coming along with you and we will add 6 xtra just in case Bag end decides to come along. Ok lets try this.. |

Heres what I hope will be some helpful travel tips. For those motoring to the gig: Having not been there for a long time I took a run over to BagEnd to refresh my memory earlier today. If you get directions from Yahoo, Google, etc..ignore county road numbers given, look for the street names..as an example, it tells me to turn on to CR-30..you wont find a sign like that..its marked V49..but you knew that. Illinois is kinda cute that way. Blago spent the money on haircuts. When you turn into the little industrial complex..go to suite E all the way down on your left..I saw no signs saying BagEnd anywhere. Theres a big E on their dock door. And for those who may build a hankerin for a hops infested beverage the Onion Pub is darn near across the street..ok, maybe a block or so. Could be a temporary hangout before Durty Nellies. Bill..travel light, just bring one lung, I'll borrow you one of mine. Gary |

We're just getting ready to leave for the airport, but I'm sad to report that it will be just me, Bill and Erik as my mom is not feeling good enough to stay here by herself. Asthma can come up suddenly and the pollens are hitting her hard right now. I know many of you were looking forward to seeing my dad, and I thank you for your understanding. But we still have eachother! |

As a fellow asthmatic I know just how she feels at this time of year. We have alot of oilseed rape fields nearby that can kick off an attack very suddenly. Graeme |

Moder Dave!!! 3. Parking at Durty N's is free all day on Saturday. Recognize this post is not essential reading. I guess that I, like the rest, are just REALLY EXCITED. Safe travels to all travelers. Well, Tuesday night I came down with a stomach disorder; never figured out what kind, but the bathroom is a mess. The fever broke last night, and I'm in recovery mode. I'm pretty wiped out physically, but it's still my intention to some how get loaded up and out the door tomorrow morning. With that, I would appreciate it if one of you locals can look over my routing. Turns out that both Indiana and Illinois have toll roads, and it was getting to be a bit of a chore figuring out how much coinage would be needed. So I asked the Google for a non-toll route. Coming up I-65 through Indiana, I'll pick up I-94 south of Gary. I'll take I-94 into Chicago where I'll pick up I-290. At some point, I-290 becomes IL-53. I'll take IL-53 to NW Hwy. Does this look reasonable? According to Google it's just a few minutes longer than taking I-90 the whole way; and I-90 has tolls in Indiana and Illinois. Thanks; I'm going to rest some now. Dave, That route will work, but depending on what time you'll be doing the I-94/I-290 through downtown, it can be REALLY slow. Friday rush hour leaving downtown will probably start about 3pm and last until about 7pm. If you're before or after that, you'll be fine. The I-294 route will run you through 3 tolls, each $1 for cash. If you're coming through between 3pm and 7pm, it is WELL worth the $3 to avoid a LOT of traffic. Hope that helps and REALLY hope you feel better! Loch |

Dave, I posted this above, http://www.illinoistollway.com/portal/page?_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&_pageid=133,1495185 . It is a link to the Illinois tollway rates page. As was suggested I would take the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to I-90. I-355 is new since I lived and last drove up here. I would consider taking I-294 to I-80 to I-355 to I-90 since this might avoid some of the inevitable road work on I-294. It should also miss some of the road work going on with I-90 (I ran into this going from O'Hare to St. Charles). Some of the local folks should be able to validate this as a good idea or not. Keith |

Hopefully this isnt too late for those driving in. They've started nightime construction on Il-53 north of I-90 (after 7pm)..but it shouldn't be to bad at that time of day. Also they're predicting rain for this evening (Friday) so that should add to your driving pleasure. Gary |

Hi, everybody, I came into town safe and sound yesterday, everything is okay. Mike, Olie, we will hang out tonite after the game, for sure. I also hope that Susan is getting well soon, and that also Dave is recovering quickly. All the best from me... The site at Day's Inn Barrington is a paradise spot. Right around the corner is Clarke's bakery for a good European breakfast (he was born and raised in Ireland, he reported), we have the Barrington cellars just across the street for all kind of beverages, and then the is Sergio's Pizza right next to the Cellars to hang out at night... Not the great big world like Downtown CHI, but I really loved it Chalie: sorry to hear that you cannot make it either, I would have loved to meet you... Ha, Juel, that would be too cool... I have toyed with the idea of bringing the imfamous double-neck with me that John Judge designed and had Alembic built in 1978, but my concerns were too big. I have no instrument with me, guess that means, I will be hanging out in front of the building... |

ARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! Okay...my weekend just got a little screwed. I got a patient with a clotted bypass graft that I've just started thrombolytic therapy on. Best case scenario is that it's open at 8:00 am, I'm done with it and life goes on normally. More than likely, I'll come in at 8:00 and have to come back around 5 or 6 pm. So Durty Nellie's is now not looking so promising. I just hope I don't get screwed out of too much of the gathering itself. Pizza's supposed to arrive by 12'ish. Hope to see you guys on time. We're about to head out to "Ram Big Horn Brewery" in Schaumburg Il and meet Chritsian for dinner if any of you other cats are in the area come on by. Look fowward to seeing everyone tomorrow. There was at least 31 Alembics there - Mica said it was more finished instruments than she had ever seen. Very cool & fun day. Lots of jamming, great pizza & snacks and even some adult beverages ;^)! Here's a sample of the final group picture minus a few that left earlier. I'm sure many more professional shots are coming later (along with the group owners photos) |

I have 180 photos, John's wife Tracy was snapping away, someone else's spouse(?) filled up her memory card, and Bill has some video footage. Loch, Mica, Enzo and others were also observed capturing souls. ;-) On top of that Mike recorded mp3's of it - he will be faced with a time consuming editing session - hopefully it will sound as good as it felt. :-) |

I'll bet Mica and the BagEnd peoples heads are about to explode from all the questions etc. Did anyone get a good picture of the rig BagEnd had set up for us ? After hearing it and talking to them I'm seeing one of their powered cabinets in my furure. Oh..and thank you Jonathan for the pizzas. Kev..were those plain cheese burgers or bacon cheese burgers ? So is it too early to plan next years gathering ? I'm open from Jan 1st on Thanks again to all Gary |

You all were fantastic, folks... it was also great to see that everyone put up his best behaviour, even in the abscence of the Master of all Moderators it was great to talk to all of you folks in person who I just knew through this gorgeous online community before... greetings to you all, your Christian |

I'm back in California. WOW, what a blast! A huge thanks to all involved in organizing. As amazing as the collection of Alembics (and some very cool non-Alembics - even a Travis Bean!) were, the best part, for me, was meeting so many of the friends I've made over that last several years in Alembic cyberspace. You're all invited out to the Bay Area next month for the 3rd annual Northern California gathering. I know we have our work cut out for us to match the hospitality, camaraderie, and general good vibes provided by our mid-west brethren. Bill, tgo (Message edited by lbpesq on May 31, 2009) |

A HUGE HUGE thanks to everyone involved in organizing and hosting this event! I believe it was Tracy that said she had never seen so many grown men with such stupid-happy faces! I know I've still got mine. Getting to play some really nice basses, and hearing others absolutely killing in the jam session was a real treat. But meeting Mica, her family (Erik is WAY too cute), and all the club members, and finally putting faces to names was certainly the best part. Not surprisingly, Alembic owners are some REALLY cool people! Dave, your untimely illness was mourned by all present. But we were all "moderate" in your honor! And yes Toby, you were missed but represented! Thanks to all, Loch |

Just got home flying in from Chicgo, (and boy are my arms tired),and want to take a moment and thank everyone at BagEnd, Alembic and all the Chicago folk that made us Texans feel very welcome. I had a great time. It was great to a face to the names. I feel honored that I've now had the chance to play two of the first 20 Alembics. Keavins #12 and Michaels #16. (Only 18 more to go) Jonathan I regret not getting a chance to hook up your Line 6 after you brought it for me but there was just so much going on I didn't have the heart to pause the action. And the Pizza was the bomb! Thanks again for a great time, OO PS. I thought it great that John Judge lead us in a toast as we raised our glasses at Durty Nellies in Honor of Brother Paul. |

I can't tell you folks how much I enjoyed meeting everybody. It's great to be part of the family! We've started uploading pics to smugmug and they probably won't all be uploaded until sometime late tonight or early tomorrow. There are a couple of versions of a few of them, and if there are any that you would like to have good copies of, whether to print or just for whatever, let me know and Tracy will tweak them and clean them up a bit for you. Oh, and the one's I took aren't very good. The pics are here: http://scarysharkface.smugmug.com/gallery/8398143_6Vkbj#551268367_7Qtt3 John's toast to Paul was very appropriate, as I'm pretty sure Paul was in all of our thoughts throughout the day. Thanks to all for a great time. The kindness and generosity of Mica, Bill (Eric too!) and the Bag End family - Jim, Larry, Debbie & Heather was unmatched. Everyone was so generous to share their instruments (and trust me, there were some very expensive customs available!!)thanks again. Please support Bag End products along with your Alembics when possible, their cabinets are amazing and the people are the best. I look forward to seeing everyone again. Paul |

It was an amazing experience...one that I'll cherish forever. Meeting the people with whom I've had on-line correspondences for the past 6 years was quite a trip. And for me, it was the first time in my life I got to jam with so many people. Was a bit overwhelming at first, but I had Bill and Roger holding down the six string duties with me. Although Bill had to keep calling out the chord changes to "Eyes of the World" for me and I still kept getting it wrong! |

I have been sick 12 days (and I sing in my band too) today is the 1st that I have felt ok. I have been taking Musinex diligently because I had a terrible cough and it worked very well. Peace! Hey everyone, Just got home from the recording studio and I must say I am beat!..tired and ready for bed, 6 hours sleep in three days just doesn't cut it for me..but I do it all again just to meet you guys and hear all those Alembics...it was well worth the loss of sleep. Special thanks to Alembic, Bag End and Mica for making this possible and everyone for bringing some fabulous Alembics. Bill thanks for the Joke it was a good one, Mike great stories ! maybe we should write together sometime! Olie it was nice meeting the Texas connection and Christian what a humble and wonderful person you are, Keavin,You Da Man! and to the rest of you it was a pure pleasure and treat to meet all of you. Bag End Guy's I knew we Have thunder but I didn't know MT. ST. HELENS was located in Barrington, IL for those of you that missed it 4 X 21" Sub Cab power by 2 Crown 1200 watt amps, when the crossover kicked in I felt the hair on my arms braid with Gare's Hair on his arms..It was Rub a dub Dub 1 Big Ass Sub. The gathering by the way at Durty Neillie"s was really nice and thanks to everyone on this post I felt very comfortable making a toast to brother Paul, through all the Post I felt like I knew him fairly well and yet never laid eyes on him...Such is the sign of a true Elite group of Alembic club members Playing in Harmony and I firmly believe that Paul heard all of us playing that day. We all managed to do that including myself, as tired as I was at the end I couldn't resist the thin neck action on the Buckeye burl and popped around the corner to plug in and have my way with it. All I could say was Nice very, very Nice as I felt my fingers fly across the neck. But by far my pick for best finish goes to the quilted Cocobolo on the Bird of Prey, like Mica has stated any pictures you seen of this Bass don't do it justice, you have got to see it in person. Well tomorrow I am taking the day off to recover but as promise to the members who missed this great event, I will post the art drawing for my new design Bass called the Raven Resonator. Thanks again and look forward to meeting you all again and Christian have a safe flight home. Peace John Judge |

Well it's hard to find the right words to describe what a memorable day this gathering has been. Having desired always an Alembic and finally acquired 2 in a month (life is strange), the 2nd one the day before this get together, my head was spinning all day. It's been a great pleasure to meet everybody, from Mica (tough day with a million informations/explanations/suggestions given), her family and each one of the presents which I'd like to thank for the umbelievable spirit and availability. It was amazing to see the joy in every face, a show on its own ! |

". . . for those of you that missed it 4 X 21" Sub Cab power by 2 Crown 1200 watt amps . . ." uh yeah - I should apologize for that, I got carried away with that jam in D, I tuned the E down to D and found if I 'punched' the upper horn on my fretless that the note blossomed so quickly and cleanly that it felt like an audio chiroprator was re-aligning my spine... I couldn't stop. From my toes to my nose it shook everything. Heather busted me aftwards - saying that I had a goofy grin on my face. I felt like Perkunos, Haokah, Thor (stick in Thunder Diety of your choice) - I had POWER! Unfortunatly I abused it. :-/ Bill I can make time this coming weekend ;-) The event truely was fantastic and I am still riding the high from it - the people, the instruments, the jamming - it could go on forever and I wouldn't have gotten enough of it. |

Just getting back to the computer--my delay doesn't indicate any lack of enthusiasm for the event. It was what you'd expect from a bunch of great people getting together because of a shared passion, and with the source of our common bond (the Santa Rosa folks--who also share the passion) organizing and participating. Was happy to share a part of the collection (glad you liked the Old Bird, John) and to be able to try out others' instruments, too (Keavin set the pass-around tone when he walked in, took out number 12 and handed it to the closest member, so that everyone could have it in their hands). Sorry I missed dinner, but did have a chance to click bottles with Keavin over a toast to Brother Paul, at the gathering. I think we all felt his presence and will continue to. After this one, I'd travel all over the country to get to gatherings, money permitting. dw |

Keavin, thanks for letting us all have a swat at #12. That was spectacular. You really can play that thing too! Tracy and I both love your "no-holds-barred, with an emphasis on pure fun" approach to bass. You really know your way around a bass guitar (and drum set - who knew?!). Awesome. John |

I can't say anything that hadn't been said here already. But I'm going to try. What a truly amazing time for me. To meet SO many great people, not to mention musicians, in one place was awesome. Pauldo, the D jam was super melty!! I never did the Bill and Ted "be excellent to each other" windmill before, it just seemed so appropriate. Hats off to the music...I came to play with other Alembics, and got more than I wanted. Three Alembic Basses, Three Alembic Guitars, one set of drums, all at the same time. I have NEVER seen that before. Jonathan I hope everything turned out alight. To everyone else, especially Jim at Bag End for hosting and supplying equipment, and Mica for organizing and sweet little swag items I say a hearty and loud THANK YOU!!! I want more, more, MORE!!! Need to hear the jams Mike, take your time and thanks for archiving again. I lost track of everyone that I played with, thanks a million times to you too! Freakin' AWESOME! It was great to hang with Bill, Christian, and "the other guy" (there are two pics of him sitting and holding basses in this thread) I didn't catch his name, after the after. Stacks of beer were great! Bill glad you made it back, Christian have fun at Bag End today! (Message edited by paulman on June 01, 2009) |

Is that what that was John ? Wondered why my arms itched so much. For those who missed it..BagEnd's setup was the 4 x21 sub mentioned above. 2 2x18 cabs..2 1x15 low cabs..2 1x15 reg cab's..1 1x18 ELF..1 2x10..and 1 4x10..at least one each: F1-x..SF-2..F2-B. And they threw in a 1x12 for guitar With the exception of the 4x21 and 1x15 reg cabs it appeared all others were their powered cabinets..1000 watts each. Yes..we should all have a similar rig in the living room for practice ! And of course alot of great instruments to oggle..think the Bird of Prey was also my fav..but that Cocobolo Excel was pretty cute. I'm sorry I missed the Durty Nellies party, the gig I played instead drew tons of people..counted 14 (including the bartender), but we did get a few hours of practice in. Thanks again to all for a great day Gary |

A special Thanks to Alembic, Bag End and to Mica, (who couragously answered all the multitude of questions), for hosting and putting together the event/ great experience. Thank You for providing the memorable day for me and my sons, (one of which managed to make it into a picture with the wonderful sounding, playing and looking Buckeye Burl S.C. Signature); the pizza, and sharing of build/ ownership and th eplaying of members basses along with listening to jams. It was great also to be back at the Bag End shop: since my last visit was in Palatine in the mid-seventies, where I heard my 1st Alembic!!! Note: Love those Low Bass powered single 15`s!! Thanks for the facility to be able to connect with other local, (as well as distant), Alembic owners/players... hope to keep in touch. |

Hey, hey, hey A little too much credit there! You got some Southerners, Californians, at least one foreigner (Christian), and assorted sundry persons. Amazing the police didn't park outside Bag End and follow you all home! :-) Anybody wondering what happened to the hippies need look no further...they are us. Well, 31 basses? I see what the bar is now for the New York New England group. If we get Danny and Adam to show up, we can beat that number... |

I'm toward the right side, wearing the tie-dyed Alembic shirt in the group shot. My drummer Andy is next to me with the black non-alembic shirt, Juel from Cremer Guitars is in front of me in suspenders. Keith H. from Carolina is behind me in a plaid shirt. John Judge is standing behind Andy. Roger is kneeling on the far left, and Bill Panzer is sitting in front of him and Ollie. Mike (dadabass2001) |

I just wanted to give a credit where credit is due..I heard a lot of great Bass players in Chicago, but what touched me the most was seeing people playing from their heart and for the love and passion of their instrument and when they were playing someone else"s, they played it with total respect for the instrument and for the owner along with the fact in knowing it was an Alembic. There was pop's and chop's and Funk and soul, blues and Dead and never once did I see anyone person with the big head thinking that were better than someone else. All were humble with respect for the other, truly a fantastic event and my hat is off to everyone who attend and maintained the club spirit. Now after you read this I want you to stand up and take a bow..you deserve it! thanks again for letting me a part of this ..peace to all John |

I told Mica I was hoping the little one would knock my bass over and destroy it, so I could have a COTM.. She chuckled uncomfortably. ;) I agree, John, that it was so cool to have a room full of Alembics (and other fine hardware) to play, knowing that everyone in the place appreciated the opportunity and sense of community. What a great bunch of people! John |

I juust finished cutting over four hours of stereo sounds from the ABC (Alembic BagEnd Chicago) jams into 37 tracks. As mp3s it would fit on one disc, as Audio CDs it needs four to make it. Who in the club wants copies? I'm going to bed Mike |

Yes it's a (SeriesII electronic Package)the humcanceller is underneath all that brass, however i believe ron at some point decided on two 'standard electronic packages' by giving the seriesI the basic 5 peice neck lams & the seriesII wood front/back matching lams & 7 peice neck lams W/LED's...anything other than the two basics would be concidered custom. But alembics werent call series basses in in 1972 they were just called "Custom alembics" i think Late 72 or early 73 they started the calling the two Basic models "series" instruments............dela217 would be able to shed alittle more light on the early History. OK - I got my pictures posted BUT They are on a 14 day trial period - once the 14 days are up they will be gone (at least from that web page). Go here: http://pauldo.smugmug.com/gallery/8434531_3DTNo#P-1-12 You will see all of the shots - the good, the bad, and the funny. If you can not download them from the page drop me an e-mail as to which pictures you would like. And now for the whiskey talk.... here's the deal - We were in Chicago at a place where all of these people got together,,, and it was so darn comfortable! It felt natural to be hanging out with all of these people with a shared passion, there was no akwardness, or uneasiness, it was just comfortable. Thank you all again. I love you guys. Now - what can we do to make this an annual event? |

Thanks guys. Yep, Fender flatwounds. I don't recall which ones, but they were cheap cheap cheap. I think $17 a set or something obscene like that. Who owns the zebrawood Distillate we flogged all day long? That was a hoot to play! I wish I'd played the Stanley, but then my wallet and wife are relieved I didn't. ;) John |

Here's a slightly weird story... every June I fly to Chicago to go the NHRA race in Joliet with my brother who lives in the NW suburbs. Yesterday I asked him to take me to a music shop so I could buy some finger picks. (They were thrilled... big sale of the day!) My brother wrote down a few addresses from the phone book. One of them was The Original Harmony Guitar Company on 22N272 Pepper Rd in Lake Barrington. Sound familiar? We never found the store, but when we pulled into the parking lot, there was a Bag End sign on the building and I thought it looked familiar. Oh well, missed it by that much! Glad you had fun though. Only one correction to Speicky's post above: Juelu is not in the back row left, he's sitting front row right (in front of tiedyed Mike Addyman and Andrew the drummer). Juel has his hands on his ankles and is sitting crosslegged. Mike (a 57 yr old Virgo) |

thanks, Mike, I will edit my post accordingly also, I believe I spied Richard Magnini standing on the left side, the man with the yellow shirt, but I'm not sure at all... |

I don't remember stuff very well, but I don't recall seeing this one before. It's from Paul's pics. Is this on the board and my brain cells are corrupted? If not, the electronics are intriguing. |

Looks like standard Europa/rogue package in an interesting configuration to me. (then again, it's 02.40 here and my eyes are numb from staring at network diagrams since 11pm.) Graeme |

It's a small picture, and maybe it's a reflection; but it looks like a switch plate, like the 5-way switches on guitars. |

I'm feeling great; thanks! And I'm really happy for everyone that attended. And I did get to have an intimate discussion with the bathroom floor! Life just is; and even if you're curled up on the bathroom floor, you experience that and move forward from there. Even if you're not where you had planned to be, where you are is always a pretty amazing experience. |

Dave, Any chance it might be this bass? Notice the switch plate on the guitar next to it? Loch

Dave, that should be Mica's Essence with kingwood top and cherry core. I remember her saying it has a slightly smaller body compared the standard. |

That's some tricky photography in the first little picture. Dave is doubly right...it's a reflection and a knife switch. |

yep - it is Mica's ultra polish job that is showing the reflection of the Further next to it. It kinda does look pretty cool - but I'm certain that a switch there would be getting knocked all around. Dave - good to hear you are feeling better - we needed no moderating as everyone was on their best behavior... I remembered to breathe! Except for when that infamous 4 x 21 cabinet did the breathing for me!!! |

Mike, Any possibility of uploading the mp3's somewhere so people can download them? Thanks, Loch "I just finished cutting over four hours of stereo sounds from the ABC (Alembic BagEnd Chicago) jams into 37 tracks. As mp3s it would fit on one disc, as Audio CDs it needs four to make it. Who in the club wants copies? I'm going to bed Mike" |

Loch, I don't have a spot to upload to and besides, I'm not the only participant. Copies for attendees, and/or regular club members is not a problem. I've sent out seven. Each person can seed out to others, kinda like an "ATree" Mike |

Three little guitar players all in a row. All of them are thinking "how (the hell) does this song go?" Mike is in the picture too, but he knows ALL the songs (Message edited by paulman on December 04, 2009) |
